What does Lycoming know about 100LL Replacement?

Re: What does Lycoming know about 100LL Replacement?

There was an approval letter for many of their engines to run on the lower octane Swift fuels.
The SL just seems to extend service intervals for the engines that were approved.
Still nothing for us higher compression guy's that will need 100 octane replacement.
What a nightmare, so you go through the conversion process, fly a cross country, can't get unleaded at one of your fuel stops and now you have to start all over.

Useless until all airports have the stuff.

Re: What does Lycoming know about 100LL Replacement?

Joel - a good reminder of why what's needed (and what the COG participated in advocating for several years ago) is a single, drop-in 100 octane replacement. I haven't heard of any updates recently but the last I knew the FAA was testing 100 octane replacements from Swift and Shell.

Glenn
I read this as more of a positive that UL102 is moving ahead. Lycoming’s service letter did not limit the increase to service time to 91/96UL fuel only. The replacement for 100LL has been around for testing and I am sure Lycoming has done that testing. Now it is up to the FAA. The FAA published a schedule for testing but they have stated there is not a requirement to eliminate LEAD.

Hello from Paros Island Greece. (isn't the internet something!)

Thanks for the reminder, I knew that we were participating.

The Internet sucks if you're on vacation in Greece and are putting time in online. :D

Always plenty of down time waiting for the wife to ready. :D

Swift just made this announcement. It appears the push to eliminate lead is on again. It is interesting that people talk about the problem of lead but they do not talk about the lead and lead oxide scavenger that is bad for the aircraft engines.

03.11.20 Edition: Swift Fuels Unveils $100 Avgas STC's--Including New 'FOREVER' Avgas STC Company Bolsters Its FAA Certification Program For Unleaded Aviation
Gasoline
Swift Fuels, LLC, a global leader in the development of high-performance
unleaded aviation gasoline, has just announced that the company has slashed
the price of its UL94 Avgas Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) by more than
75% - to $100 for each piston aircraft.
Swift Fuels is also rolling-out its new "FOREVER" Avgas STC certificate to
all Avgas STC purchasers which entitles the holder to receive all future
Avgas STC's issued by the FAA to Swift Fuels for specific aircraft and
piston engines at no extra charge. Forever!
So, buyers get the UL94 Unleaded Avgas STC and the Forever Avgas STC
certificate - together for $100. Find out more by going to:

So the $100 STC is buying the right to be able to buy their gas?

In the case of a 114, the engine is approved for UL94 but the airframe is certified for 100LL. The STC has been for the airframe to use UL94. Now they are talking about a STC for all aircraft "FOREVER" for all future Avgas STCs issued by the FAA. Do they know something is coming and HOW SOON?

So confused on all this.....so our engine is fine running UL94, but, the metal around my engine (airframe) is only certified for 100LL??????

... the sealant in the tanks, the o-rings in various locations in the fuel delivery system, the hoses connecting to the engine. All those have to be certified for the new fuel. I'm reasonably sure the metal itself is fine.

Similar to what the famous genius once said, if they (Swift) can’t describe it simply, they (Swift) don’t understand it enough. So, can the 114 fleet burn their UL94, yes or no? Swift has demonstrated great progress in this area, and I am convinced they will soon come up with a solution if this UL94 isn’t it already.

In the next UK AOPA magazine an article states that by the end of 2020 TEL production will end in Europe, leaving all 112 owners grounded. Is their an alternative engine we can fit, now the IO390 is no more? Would of course have to run on UL91 which is available here.
