What a time.......

We left last Thurs to take the grand kids back to NC, two boys ages 2 and 4. Older one is plane crazy, younger one I'm not so sure ( or I wasn't ).
Three days going, mostly because we didn't want to put them in any bad weather and ruin the trip.
Stopped in Storm Lake IA and was surprised to find a water park at the hotel, great way to wear out kids.
Bloomington IN next then on to Southern Pines NC. One day to see the family and now we are on our way back.
A funny thing happened on the way to the forum..........
Flying VFR ontop at 6500 ( with FF ) we find our forecast is not getting better ahead but worse, soon we are at 8500 then 10500 and seeing CB's out the window ahead coming up out of the under cast. I swore I would never be one of the VFR into IMC pilots. Ever. But here I am.
Called in to center ( just as they were calling us) asking for nearest. They gave us Julian Caroll ( pardon the spelling) 11 miles to the north, loaded into GPS and headed down, fast. 9000ft descent in 11 miles IMC over eastern KY.
Popped out of clouds 1200ft in rain, but there is a flat black spot right there. Alignment is right and we are down.
Taxi past 2 10000 gallon fuel tanks and park. There is one hanger open and a guy comes out looking rather surprised that a plane is on the ramp.
We told him we would be staying and would take a fill up and a car to get to a motel for the night. He smiles and says they haven't had fuel there since 2006 and they don't have a courtesy car, for that matter there are no rental cars in town either!
Looking around I realize that there were no numbers or centerline or any markings at all on the runway.
Next to the airport, and I do mean right next to the airport is a large new looking brick building our new friend says is NOAA weather station. We went over and met some of the best people ever. After they stopped laughing they fed us arraigned for someone to come up from Jackson and pick us up. Recommended a motel( pretty much the only motel) and gave us the most through ( although unofficial, and they made that very clear) weather briefing ever.
We are still traveling, currently doing the Bourbon tour in Frankfort KY, and it is fun.
I didn't write this to try to show I'm a great pilot, actually the reverse, I learned just how fast and how easy it is to get past you own comfort and safety limits, and hope you never have to learn from experience.

Re: What a time.......

Sounds exciting! So, did you land on the runway, or was it the NOAA parking lot?

;)

Re: What a time.......

I have landed at most of the airports in Eastern KY as part of work I do for Appalachia Service Project. Julian Carroll is, indeed, a strange one. Must have been a coal company put up some big money and had plans, then bailed. Did get fuel there a couple of times years ago, but no one ever home. Only 10 ore 12 air miles south (probably 35 or 40 driving, though) is Wendell Ford (Hazard, KY) and they have a great FBO and you can get a rental car from town, (not that it helps now, but in case anyone is ever in the area.) But it is great how the folks of KY took care of you. You will find that virtually everywhere in that state.

My thoughts exactly Scott. Just a few miles south from JKL to AZQ (actually K20... VOR is AZQ) and most of the comforts of modern civilization... Although the town of Hazard will remind one of a set from Justified. One needs to be careful landing @ K20 in low wx though because the runway is a "field goal approach" between two adjacent mountain tops. Seem to remember a mooney cashing out his chips early ten or so years ago.

Wow,

What an adventure!

Re: What a time.......

Finished the tour last night, met some more great people, now a concentrated effort to get home. Well semi concentrated. We will be looking for more adventures along the way. Keep you posted.

And it does feel like you land in the parking lot!

Re: What a time.......

Didn't get far, lifted off this AM and avionics started dropping offline @ 800ft. Back down and having local AP check Alt. I'll probably be looking up replacement alternator recommendations on the site next. Nothing a few AMU won't fix.:o

Re: What a time.......

In cedar rapids IA and alls well. This has been a trip for the books, won't post long stories but know that you can't make up this stuff!

Re: What a time.......

Kevin- Quite an adventure. Your perspective - the right one. See my post about the ground wire reroute in Alternator and Zeftronics. Safe flying! Sherman

Re: What a time.......

Sherman, thanks, I did read your post before this happened and showed it to the AP on site. He understood your reasoning and did that.
As has been said many time before, the depth of knowledge of this group and the willingness to share it is beyond compare, thanks to everyone for the great info and advice.

Re: What a time.......

OK just one more......

This is how kids should travel! BTW Bonnie says I can NEVER, EVER give Cheetos to the kids in the airplane again. Seems I will be cleaning the seats for a while.....

Plaque in Jackson KY, home of the famous Julian Carrol Airport in "Bloody Breathitt County".....
