US 2020 COG Fly-in?

Some people use their plane in their business.
As a result, their expenses are deductible against their revenue in the business.
As long as the "meeting" aka "fly-in" is for maintaining the plane and keeping it operating, the expenses to attend are still tax deductible I understand.
If the "meeting" is purposed as more social in nature then that's not deductible.
I am hoping the planners will do everything they can to make this a meeting for which we learn how to maintain the plane.
If due to the virus conditions it actually does not result in a learning experience primarily in spite of best efforts then that's beyond the control as it is the intent.
Hopefully we will have Jim R, Frank, and Carl and others come talk as that is a definite qualifier so the meeting will be as much of a learning experience as possible under the circumstances. Perhaps we have an accountant on the forum that can offer a professional opinion.

There will definitely be formal information sessions given by the RCM team. The sessions will be held at the West Baden Springs Hotel Bar, between 8:00 and 10:00pm Friday and Saturday nights. Immediately following each session will be an optional question & answer, and small group gathering period from 10:00pm to 1:00am. All attendees will be charged the for the event. The cost will be equivalent to the cost of a beer, and a cocktail. All attendees will receive upon entry a beer, a cocktail, an RCM pen, and an RCM pad of paper. The beer and the cocktail will be provided by the bar, the pen and the pad will be provided by RCM. The beer and the cocktail are yours to do with what you wish, the pen and the paper are for taking notes during the information sessions, and question & answer period, and will serve as evidence of participation for your tax records. Additional beer and cocktails will be available from the bar upon request. The sessions are primarily designed for Hot Shot owners, but are open to all who choose to attend, and will cover a wide range of topics including a review of all of the model designations, useful load, weight and balance, horsepower, wing load, landing gear, brakes, airspeed, lift, drag, baggage door gas springs, required & recommended maintenance, and others. All sessions will be structured in an open discussion, tabletop style format.

The sessions are open to all Commander owners and guests. All we ask is that you refrain from any loud and obnoxious ramblings, cursing, vulgarity, foul language, ROP/LOP discussions, lewd or bigoted comments, slurs, slanders, talk about VG's, criticism of the presentor or any other generally socially unacceptable actions, sounds, or behavior.

We've reached out to the Commander Aircraft Corporation in an effort to secure some after hours entertainment. Although we've not heard back from them, our hope is that they might provide us with a couple of Chinese jugglers, or perhaps a man on stilts.

Additional one-on-one information sessions will be held at the French Lick Airport upon request.

Heather and I are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. I feel we are both more than ready for some R&R.

I get in Weds, looking forward to some practice at the bar before the RCM "meeting". Great post Carl. We also have a golf group ready to go. Lonnie and B. Hopkins we need to get 86'd from the bumper car rides.....

Mugs are a question this year. Minimum order is 72, depends on how many plan on showing up.

Let's just get some stickers for this year, that we can slap onto plain mugs from Walmart.

Carl,

Does this educational session qualify for Wings credits?

Looking forward to the next Commander Safety meeting.

Life is a barrel of fun.

86 is the safest route since Lonnie and Bunn turn those monsters into a full contact sport!!
I’m in for golf Peter, we’re arriving Wed. Need to practice staying up late for Carl’s seminar too...so much to do.

Carl,

Does this educational session qualify for Wings credits?

Actually RCM is the only known source of aviation related information that creates negative Wings credits! You will either have to sign and file a waiver with the FAA denouncing all that you learned, or take 2 additional Wings courses to make up for it:)

This is sounding more and more like we in for a lot of fun and really good time.

Ok I don’t want to hear anymore complaints about how high your hull insurance is going up $$$. You all only seem to be worried about keeping your golf handicap down.

There is a zero chance there won’t be some useful maintenance discussions over the weekend (most likely to take place before 6p each day.) We are not formally scheduling same due the multitude of uncertainties surrounding the ability to hold the fly-in on the scheduled dates. You will need to make your own tax related decisions based upon consultations with your individual tax advisor as (disclosure) COG does not provide tax advice...

Carl,
Thank you for explaining the Wings Program. The harder I try to a Wings badge, the further I get behind and I was told I have negative points.;)

If there is interest, Roy Williams has invited us to the new Airframe Components state of the art facility, http://www.airframecomponents.com/ During the last fly in at French Lick, we did a flight to see the company. He is know around the world for their quality and service of aviation metal components and some aircraft manufactures use them to do component repair under their name.

Will be the first fly-in for my wife and I. Looking forward to it!

I'm in. Really enjoyed Augusta, GA a couple of years ago. Looking forward to seeing every one.

Hey I was just wondering if at any of the commander fly-in’s or any other had the ability to do Annuals. It would be a great way to get this accomplished. Any thoughts anyone?

Fly- ins are for camaraderie, learning and socializing - wouldn't think anyone would be interested in doing annuals. It would mean lugging a whole set of tools with you including a compression tester that might or might not connect to the compressor at the location that you're at. What would happen if something was found that required parts which is not unusual - now your planes is apart far from home while you sit and wait for parts, and the person that committed to do the annual is stuck there with you. Most of us bring our significant others I could just imagine how that would go over.

Brings back memories from when I was a kid. There was a little grass strip with a flying community on a lake about 50 miles from our home. Dad & I would go to a cookout at a guys hangar on a Sunday afternoon. Several other guys had their planes there. Everyone took their logbooks... k

Ok not at the annual fly in but maybe one for that reason possibility at a FBO that has done lots of Commanders. And yes even if it was sort of unofficial it would bring togeather other commanders especially new owners with a less costly approach. Just a thought.
