Toronto Commander Clinic

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

121 M ELT is all you need.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

A 121 MHz let suffices as transport canada has not yet concluded its proposition.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Hi Scott, I'm moving to Midland MI. Any comments on Barstow or MBS? Thank you, Pete

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Getting into Canada is really not a big deal. Canada Customs does not deal with EAPIS. Just a simple phone call. They do want a minimum of 2 hours notice. I will setup my Customs into Canada (when returning from the US) the day before and then amend if necessary. Super friendly customs folks at CYKZ.

Scott ... Buttonville has a crew car that you can use next time that you come into Toronto. Not sure how long they let you have it.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Unfortunately, the eAPIS process is required to leave and reenter the US. I agree, Canada is very easy to enter, just call CanPass at least 2 hours ahead to set that up and they are incredibly nice and helpful.
However, coming back to the US can be a nightmare...set up the eAPIS manifest, call ahead to the airport of entry, arrange for a CBP cop to meet you (don't be more than 30 minutes early or late!!), wait in the plane until they come out, go through your airplane, test for fissionable contents or what not...
Ugh...a very sad commentary.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Interested ..please let me know when more detaols are up

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Peter, getting yousome good contacts who hangar there.

Regarding eAPIS, once set up in the system which takes 10 - 15 minutes of entering stuff, it only takes a couple of minutes to edit for each new flight . REally not a big deal at all after you have done it a couple of times,

BUT ... always ask CANPASS when you call ((888) 226-7277) the hours of the airport you want to fly into. NOT always as published. And some airports are much different than others, but that may depend on the day and the agent. I think I mentioned at Oshawa getting a virtual stripsearch. Windsor is a bit overly thorough. London, they usually just send you on without even talking to you! My last trip through Waterloo-Kitchener was a breeze. 5 minutes.

Now, on returning through Port Huron MI on the US side ... what a TOTAL PITA. So we pull up and park as instructed when we called. There were no signs, just a customs flag so ... well ... anyway, sat for 10 minutes with the engine running, at least 100 feet from the door but did not want to shut down in case we had to move. I called on unicom several times. We could not see in the windows --mirrored glass. Finally called the port on the cell phone and they said, "They are there!" Well crap. you cannot just get out and walk around (tried that once.) So I shut off the engine. Immediately they opened the door, I mean within 2 seconds and walked my way. I asked. They said, "we are not allowed to open the door with the engine running. Well, they do at Detroit City and Willow Run. Whatever, the bozos could have cracked the door open 4 inches and waived. THEN I did get pissed. I heard someone call on the Unicom, on the radio the guy had on his freakin' shoulder. I asked, "did neither of you hear me calling for customs and asking if I was in the correct place?" They junior officer looked to the senior officer with a strange expression. Totally asinine. One guy was nice but his boss was a little prick. He had the radio. so totally unnecessary to cop an attitude with a taxpayer who is following the rules to a T.

By the way ... IF you go IFR, the rule is if you go more than 30nm, you are supposed to file VFR Flight Plan., Well, found out that most locals don't but seemed us being foreigners, we had better. If you do not call to cancel they call QUICK! Not like the US. So we sure to cancel. We are 1.800.WXBRIEF in the US. Canada is 1.866.WXBRIEF. That is very convenient and helpful, so much that I am surprised two country's bureaucrats could think of that and agree. (I have worked in Canada a lot and they have bureaucrats that can rival ours step for step. I guess that is universal. At least they aren't looking to have their palms greased as some south of the border are.)

I couldn't agree more. I cannot understand in any way, other than that their job must totally suck, the attitude that CBP cops regularly when returning to the States. Also that they are oblivious to the notion that perhaps, just perhaps, the procedures they use differ by location. We are supposed to "know" what they are doing when they themselves do not.

A flight of 6 Commanders returned from the Bahamas in March this year and flew into Fort Pierce, FLA. At that airport, you are allowed to deplane and walk into the Customs building with your luggage for their check. Very nice (although I did get yelled at for not leaving my baggage door open when I was inside the building). However, anywhere else you have to stay in the plane until an office waddles out. I understand people wait for very long periods in the hot sun elsewhere in Florida. (Try telling your copilot she can't relieve herself for God knows how long, ain't fun).

They have all your passport info via eAPIS, what's the big deal? BTW, I am a US "trusted traveler" which makes it doubly frustrating. Returning from abroad, I breeze though a kiosk commercially but have to "assume the position" when flying my own plane.

I get all the security concerns but it shouldn't have to be this way.

Yup ... I am a "trusted traveler," have a NEXUS card AND Global Entry status on my passport. The BIG 3. It works driving a car or flying commercial, but doesn't make a damn bit of difference for private air.

Scott

I would agree on NEXUS is useless when flying private and I went to Martha's Vineyard while Obama was there on vacation a week ago, had to go IFR and land in Hyannis KHYA and go through the TSA and SS checkpoint at the airport, and have to have your assigned security number given, a plane check and bomb dogs who go through everything in the plane, they check all your baggage and emptied it out in my case and do the hand held metal detector check on all your body and then let you continue the flight into the TFR space at the vineyard IFR.

You are then met by another agent who checks your ID and you have a security number you have to give them that was assigned prior to the flight and was used in KHYA and used at both airports and then show them your ID again and a big PITA. Then departing the Vineyard had to take a downwind takeoff to the east on Runway-6 as the active that sends you opposite were the president was staying on the south west side of the island so they were not using runway 24.

I heard there are two F-16 flying 24/7 during the 7 days or whatever he was there for the TFR and two Apache or another brand attack helicopters 24/7 as well for his protection and are always airborne and ready to defend against any threat 24/7.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Hi Phil from the West Coast Commander 114 Phil. If it wasn't so far to travel I would be there in a heartbeat. Not many Commanders out here in the west.
All the best
Philip

Nainamo ... what a beautiful part of the world you live in, Philip.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Guys,

Sorry for not being more active the last few weeks. I have been buried at work. Attached is a brief document. I would like to get consensus on:

1. Week day versus Week end
2. Will any one want one of Jim's Super Stream kits
3. Any major maintenance requirements

Please email me at PLIGHT@ROGERS.COM with your thoughts.

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Guys,

So far I have not received enough confirmations for a Clinic on this coming weekend to cover the costs. Anyone who will commit to the event, please email me at PLIGHT@ROGERS.com.

If we can't get enough birds to the event, I'll try again for this coming spring.

Thanks ...

Re: Toronto Commander Clinic

Guys,

I have received a number of emails over the past day, with a number of folks dropping out for a variety of reasons. We do not have enough participants to make the event a go. I'll try and co-ordinate the event for the Spring of 2014.

Thanks ...
