Going to a big family Wedding in Austin Saturday evening and a lot of free time Saturday and some Sunday. Going commercial because plane is in annual. I love talking people to places that only the locals would know. So ... what is that place I just HAVE to check out in Austin that you were telling me about?

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

you mean the topless bar?

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

What kind of recommendations are you looking for... restaurants, music venues, scenic places... we've got it all!

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

If you have time for a 6th street adventure, go in the evening. A lot can happen on 6th street. Park in the designated areas.....they have an active tow program.

Web site with more information than you have time to see.

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

6th Street is OK, most of the fun stuff is in the warehouse district or SoCo (South Congress..)

So, if you're looking for Austin TexMex, I'd recommend Guerro's (Bill Clinton ate there, order "El Presidente" with your Hornitos Perfecta margarita!) or El Sol y La Luna, both on S. Congress. Chuy's is "the" Austin spot, but too crowded for anyone from Austin to go to often. Vivo's just east of I-35 is interesting, and has excellent cheese enchiladas. Walking around the Capital and down Congress is fun, or a walk around Lady Bird Lake is a scenic route to take. The UT campus is fun to walk around too. If you want to get out of town and see the lakes, the Oasis is a touristy spot to go, but I'd go to Iguana Grill (get the chicken flautas!).

Since you are here *this* weekend, would strongly recommend a drive out to see the bluebonnets, out 1431 is an amazing place to see them right now. East out 71 is good too. You can stay closer and see lots of wildflowers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center. Maybe get some BBQ at the Salt Lick while you're down that way. If you want bbq in town, County Line is where we take out of towners, and still one of my favorite places to go. Rudy's is all over the place and good, but I prefer Pok-E-Jo's for my close to home barbeque.

So what'dya wanna do?

Scott go with David's reccos Mary Beth & he know this town well - they did miss out on a couple of the veggie with ambiance places that I know you like.

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Mother's on Duval for great vegetarian!

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Thinking of a trip there for July 4 weekend. Any suggestions on lodging? Pilot friendly with reasonable cancellation policy would be necessary.

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Hard for me to recommend, as I've never needed an Austin hotel! Many, many choices, for sure. KEDC is a good place to fly in, maybe they'd have recommendations?

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Joel,

OK, in my other life, stayed in AUS at the Holiday Inn -Town Lake... Just south of downtown on I-35. I really liked it, but it was a contract deal from my airline, so I didn't pay the bill and don't know current rates. A good bit South of the Executive airport on I-35...

It's walking distance to town, 6th Street, and more. Also, trails and walking around the lake, including "bats" from under the Congress bridge... If you want to get out to the suburbs or County Line BBQ then will need a car. Rentals used to be cheap, but a long time ago.

Just an idea.

For a quick bite downtown try the Texas Chili Parlor. Jeans/shorts and t-shirt kind of place - holes ok. Pretty authentic...and local, be careful if you order hot...

And if you bring ladies.... Recommend they use the restroom before or after, but NOT at the chili parlor!

Scott the catus sounds like your place be sure to take your pointed toe boots with and you'll fit right in with zipped lips unless you can do the accent.

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

There's an awesomw BBQ place on the San Antonio River Walk also called the County Line. Does anyone know if they're owned by the same folks?

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Sadly, it looks like they have 10 locations around Tejas now... May have to rethink my recomendation!

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

Well, Scott? Where did you end up? Oh, if you are looking for breakfast, Trudy's has great migas! Taco Deli for lunch.... I'm making myself hungry!

Re: The place to go in Austin is ...

whew ... turned out to be a jammed long weekend with many more planned events than we expected besides "just" the wedding. Thanks for all the suggestions ... got a number of them done. Stayed at the DoubleTree, right next to Texas Chili Parlor but I was unsuccessful getting anyone to go with me. We had a big rehersal dinner at Sullivan's Steak House on Friday night, then went out on East 6th. Pretty interesting. Spent a bunch of Saturday on South Congress, below the river. A ton going on there. Then had the Sun. Morning Brunch and had to run my daughter back to SAT for her flight. But today (Monday) we ate lunch in Fredericksburg, then did the Bluebonnet tour, the backroad route, many times only room for one car to pass ... it was quite remarkable. Never saw anything quite like it, and so much rain of late brought everything out. colors were outrageous. Then we drove over to Enchanted Rock and hiked to the top. Just a fantastatic view. Then back to Fredereicksburg for dinner. home tomorrow. A great trip.

Oh, breakfast at the famous Marigold Cafe in Austin early Saturday. Met a prospective client, closed the deal. So it turns out this was not just a business trip to write off, but a very profitable one as well. Such a deal.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.

p.s ... hotels ... Doubletree Suites was excellent ... many stayed at the Stephen Austin Intercontinental and thought it was excellent as well.

Glad to hear you had such a nice stay... I was out in Fredericksburg a couple weeks ago, before the bluebonnets really came in. Bet they are great now!
