The fly in

Re: The fly in

Have you made it home Pete? Any news on your plane?

Re: The fly in

Jackie and I arrived back in the UK at around noon on Tuesday after a very uncomfortable flight in an Airbus (Commander comfort so hard to beat).

We had a fantastic week in the US with Richard and Patricia who made us so very welcome.

The week for us ended at the fly-in and I doubt anyone could have picked a better location.

We would both like to thank all the organisers especially Ian, Sid and Ken.
It was great to meet so many nice people who share a common interest and make you feel so welcome.

The line up of Commanders was something else, I never thought I would get to see so many fine planes in one place, just fantastic.

Oh, and I would also like to say thanks to Pete for the mugs we will treasure them.

Hope to post some pictures later.

Don: I made a similiar (safe) decision as you. Even though I got my Inst Rating, have not had enough "real" experience to challenge the weather front I saw on the radar. I went south Sunday morning to stay with an uncle in Gainesville, FL. Finally cleared enough for a smooth flight home yesterday.

Good meeting you and good luck returning your bird!

Re: The fly in

Mark, I got back to Phoenix late Monday night via Delta the unfriendly airline.....Should know this week what the insurance co. has to say after they look at the plane. Will post what's going on.

Pete, what happened? ... hope all is well.

Re: The fly in

Note for Blaine... I have your mug. How long will you be in LEX? Perhaps we can arrange a lunch.

Re: The fly in

Sue and I are are sooooooooooooo jealous of those who attended Jekyll Island, I had tears in my eyes reading and looking at the pictures. I am curious about Pete's airplane, whahappened? Thanks to Pete and Bill for the mug, we're in for lunch anytime. Happy to hear that everyone arrived home safely, I used to kiss the spinner after each flight for a safe return.
Keep the blue side up,

Re: The fly in

For those of you who couldn't make it the setting was magnificent. Mature trees were draped in green lichen and surrounded by well planted gardens. We strolled or rode around in electric cars just soaking it up, gently cooking in the sunshine and humidity. The buildings were indulgent and comfortable. Beer and wine flowed and in the evening we told lies under the stars to the sound of the surf.
This is a place where special moments happen. People start their married lives in the gardens and on the lawns and beaches. The COG obliged a couple who were marrying and it was a major hit. A fly-past and return. Sid, Pete and I joined Rich and his wife Lynne for dinner on the pier and met up with one of the couples. Enthusiastic !!! Commanders in the wedding photos. It added to their memories and I was pleased that the guys were able to give something back like this.
Some moments you just had to witness. The planes are all lined up getting polished and prepared for judging in the concours d'elegance. Two rowdies rolled up and liberally dusted the windshields with smoke and oil from their smoke systems. Some folk will do anything to get an advantage!
If the COG returns to Jekyll Island don't miss it second time round !

Re: The fly in

Rob are you refering to Greg and I as rowdies??? That is such a step up from my other names. LOL that is some kind of writing you did.

Re: The fly in

Rob, there's Scottish poet lurking in your soul. Pleasure meeting you and enjoying a wee dram together. Hope that during one of our upcoming trips to the isles I have the opportunity to experience EASA up close and personal. The links can wait for a few hours! ;-)

Re: The fly in

Really great and vivid discription of the fly-in Rob. Pleasure to have met you.

Re: The fly in

Hi Guys - Several of the LOCO's (Ladies of Commander Owners for those who don't know) have connected on Facebook after our glorious weekend on Jekyll Island. As a result, I have created a private FB group for the co-pilots. It can be found by searching on "L.O.C.O's - Ladies of Commander Owners." Since it is a private group, membership must be approved. For any co-pilot who wishes to join us, have her identify herself and include your tail number so that I can approve the request.

I can be found on FB at heathermores@yahoo.com or e-mail me here (it goes to my private address - not Yahoo) if there are any questions.

Thanks,
Heather Mores, N1226J

Re: The fly in

Thanks to Heather for creating the LOCOs FB site. Look out folks...we might be (slightly) dangerous. Anyone with photos from the Jekyll fly-in, please share so we can post. It is a private site, but nothing too exciting please (particularly of me). Best to all!

Re: The fly in

Lonnie. I laughed so much when the line got smoked I was almost amused.
Those of you who left early made the right call. Sid and I were left circling unable to penetrate the line of CBs into JAX. We watched a Delta 7something begin its descent from 3000 over the ocean and disappear into dense dark fractus at about 2000. Discussions of fuel onboard with ATC. We landed close by in heavy rain and lightning and I got a cab for the last part of the trip in very heavy rain and poor vis.
Left Sid musing about how much energy he'd had to expend 'talking round' his girl friend at the hotel. Incorrigible....

Re: The fly in

All in all I'd say we got lucky with the pick of the weekend for the fly-in at Jekyll. The whole east coast has pretty much been socked in since Sunday, at least everytime I've looked at the weather this week. Sid, I'm sure you made it back home ok did but curious, did you find a break in the weather to run the east coast or did you fly around / over the mess?

Rob, really enjoyed meeting you and am looking forward to the next time you hop the pond. Let me know when your coming over and I'll fly over and buy you a pint.

So much for JAX being "close by", eh? FL afternoons can be like trying to traverse a pachinko board.

Re: The fly in

Byrne yes I made it back fine Tuesday - after the adventure to Fernandina Beach as described by Rob - I waited there till the storms passed but NC and VA were well socked in with embedded reds and purples so I followed the coast line back to Jekyll Island and instead of trying the girlfriend that Rob alluded to at the hotel (the Director of Sales) who negotiated the rate with Byrne I met up with Richard and his wife Lynne. Chatted with them about the whole COG experienvce and how wonderful our members thought Jkyl Island was and the special care Richard and Lynne took of all of us at their airport.

Tuesday morn there were only greens ove NC & VA so I launched. Glenn, Board Members and Sedona organizers let me suggest that one of the high end door prizes be reserved for the COmmander who made the fastest ground speed to or back from a Fly-In for a 200 mile or more trip as recorded by flight aware. So reserve that Zulu headset for me - check FlightAware I made 185, 190 & even 200+ in stretches flying the coast from BQK (Brunswick GA) to PVG (Hampton Roads) in VA. No I didn't have one of JR's early tail mods or a surrutitious Super engine. It was just plain skill in choosing winds aloft, I cruised at 24in 2200RPM Peak Mix.

Re: The fly in

Does anyone have video of the 'SMOKIN' low pass Lonnie and Greg made on Jekyll Island???

If so, please post it, or email me dave@newhorizonsaviation.net

Names will be changed to protect the innocent.

Re: The fly in
