The fly in

Re: The fly in

Thanks Radu! I've set up my account. Would you set me up with the private account access? Mary Beth

Re: The fly in

I had a blast and great to meet everyone. But, I can't help but wonder if Pete and I are the only pilots who arrived home without their beloved Commanders? :( The nasty front left me grounded me in NC. Drove the rest!
I hope everyone got home safe and sound!
Especially you Pete, for what you went thru you sure gave a lot of laughs at the fly-in
Thanks all
Don

Nothing to be concerned about there Don. I have done it and I'm pretty sure most of the others here have left their planes behind. Better safe than sorry. I often think how I'd feel in the moments before a crash knowing that I could have avoided it all by leaving the plane on the ground and spending some time and a few bucks on a commercial flight. I then think that there is no way I will let get thereitis and a $200 rental car cost me my life. You chose right.

Re: The fly in

Don, couldn't agree with Mark more on your decision to hoof it home. As I mentioned above, I Landed at KAYS about 30 minutes after leaving Jekyll Island.

I had checked the weather right before getting in the plane and figured I had plenty of time to scoot on west before anything new developed. Fortunately in the dark and flying in and out of clouds and mist, I came to my senses and got down quick. Not 10 minutes after shutting down the engine there was a deluge for about 15 minutes. I figure I’d have flown directly into it if I’d stayed in the air another 5 minutes.

Once I got home about noon and looked at the radar again, I was hoping for the best for everyone leaving later…. Glad you and everyone else made it home.

Re: The fly in

If anyone is interested in having a painting of their plane .... Kelly reposted a painting of N6048A on her blog today....

Re: The fly in

Radu I love the beach commander fly by. that was cool

Re: The fly in

I think all that was there we all need to thank Dave K for his hard work and the nice gifts he put together for the fly-In. There was a lot of money in prizes given including the brand new Zulu headset. Thanks Dave for your hard work.

Absolutely... Dave really stepped up to get us some great stuff! I was planning to win the Lightspeed, and go back and buy the IFR led hat, but since I won the hat, now I've got to save for the Lightspeed!

Thanks for bringing the FAR/AIMs as well, Dave.

Oh, and since I'm drinking my coffee this am out of my NEW COFFEE CUP (!), thanks for all those too, Pete!

Re: The fly in

Yes, thanks to both of you guys for the cool stuff. In addition, thanks to Sven for the nifty tow bar. I used it to push the plane back into the hanger when I got home.

Re: The fly in

Mark and Byrne,
Thanks for the cheer up. I thought all of those things as well, and would hate to be the guy who left a black mark on my Family as well as a great fly-in!
The Columbia/Charlotte area was intense, I was not the only VFR guy who wanted down in a hurry! I heard several others calling VFR compromised. I prayed for all of them and I zipped thru with very little problems, I lost VFR once, for what seemed like eternity but in reality about 2 minutes going into Concord. I advised control of the on coming compromise and he said "you have to hold your heading and altitude, departing traffic" He talked me right thru it. They are very skilled at what they do! Kudo's to em all
I have never seen weather drop in and consume an area so fast? A whole different concept from an arial point of view. On the ground its goes unoticed as to what's actually happening up their.
Mike and Kim thanks for the company at Concord as well, much appreciated.

Re: The fly in

I was VFR until Charleston.

I had to ask for and got an IFR clearance abeam Charlotte direct FAYETTEVILLE direct Raleigh at 1700 feet - the cloud layer, getting lower and thicker.

Myrtle and Charleston had the jets diverting away and the Strikefinder and NEXRAD confirmed why - CBs all the way to 42K feet.

The good news was there were tailwinds in IMC the whole way.

Re: The fly in

i'll also post these in the Fly-in albums as well ..

Re: The fly in

I posted some pictures in the gallery. They are the more social aspects of the fly-in. Definitely some good memories were created at this fly-in.

Nice pictures Moazzam!

Re: The fly in

Put me in the front of the line to thank Dave for the great gifts. I have been told by my wife that the headset is her's and I can't use them. But I get a better gift, now she will start flying with me. The new head set and the encouragement from some of the other wifes has help. Thanks All

Re: The fly in

Anyone notice that the mosquitos were vicious at Jekyll? I am covered in bites.

Re: The fly in

Be glad you didn't get attacked by the mosquito's we have in Southeast Louisiana. They have been know to block streets and take small children....To make sideline money some people trap them and sell the blood to the local blood bank....

Re: The fly in

Youre all welcome about the mugs, thank you guys. I get as much fun out of giving them out as folks get receiving them.
