Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

i'm going to make this one.... Missed last year..

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

God willing and the Creek don't rise . . .

Camped last four years - adequate shower points, can be a bit noisy on the field at night and it can get cool as well.

Don't forget to get a free SnF poster from the AeroShell Booth . .

And you'll need 'tie-downs' . . .

Are you going this year? I have not flown in. I have in the past landed in Leesburg FL. KLEE and stayed with my daughter in Clermont driving down. Thought about flying in just for the experience.

That's almost the best part, the arrival NOTAM. Caution; they have two patterns, one of most of G A with a pattern speed of 100KTs dirty. if you get in amongst a line of C - 150's watch out, they will slow to 60 then back to 80. I almost passed one that was having a time navigating the 'easy' tack to the field at 60 kts mind you. . . . arg.

They also have a higher pattern for twins and HP singles that's a little faster.

I literally flew around the Lake check point a dozen times awaiting clearance last year.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

I'll be there toward the end of the week

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

I will be there too, now based in Winter Haven (KGIF) for the winter.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

We're getting close . . . anyone else? Looking at heading in on Friday the 13th:eek: . . . of all days to fly . .

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

I am considering a Friday visit and have been looking at the Notam.

I have just one question, landing on 27R the instructions are to keep my mouth shut and listen. after landing to go South to parking area. To do this I would have to cross runway 27Left. I don't generally cross active runways without permission. Am I missing something here. I have not been for S&F before.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

Ken, too easy, listening watch only once you hit the Lake.

Lake, we call them a Pond in Bama, you'll need to keep your eyes on a swivel as there will be numerous planes of all kinds and makes orbiting the pond, just fit in and wait your turn.

A Gator ATC team will chime in, 'Commander on the North side of the lake, - Go now' and you'll head in on the 'easy to follow' route to the field. You'll probably be a minute behind someone else.

Same with the Tower, 'Commander - make your base NOW' "Landing on the XXX DOT (orange or green) 'keep going, keep going' . . . .

Once on the ground you just follow the plane in front of you or the MANY, MANY lineman that will direct you where you want to go.

You'll need to print a sign to tell them where you want to go and have in your front window. NOTAM tells you how.

Mike McGrath, maybe Steve Ross and I are going to attempt to link up so we can park next to or near one another.

Hey, it sounds daunting, but keep your eyes out for the other guy and its fairly easy. the arrival Notam / procedure is my favorite part . . .

And the left right runway thing, one is a taxi way that they use as a runway, you won't have opposing or parallel traffic, just follow the ground guys.

South of the runway will be ultra light / helo traffic restricted to that side.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

Alibi Ken, just looked over the NOTAM and this year they have a video course that explains the NOTAM / procedures.

Services, the local FBO will have numerous fuel trucks working the area. Too easy to get fuel and a reasonable rate.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

John,
I do plan on heading out early Friday 13th and meet you at Enterprise. Just tell me what time to be where. If the weather looks a little shady on the 13th, I will head down late afternoon on the 12th and spend the night in Enterprise. If the weather is not so good on the 12th, I probably won't be able to make it.

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15

I flew my Commander to SnF a few years ago, the day before the show started. I followed the NOTAM procedures to the letter (windshield sign for parking and all). I arrived around 9:30 AM, and oddly enough, didn't see another airplane (either visually OR on the ADS-B traffic display) until I was on short final, and that one was taking off from the parallel runway. Honestly, I think I spend more time taxiing to the GA camping area than I did flying the arrival... It was quite a distance!

Departure was equally straightforward, though there were many more airplanes in the sky... Climbing as quickly as possible to >15,000 ft reduced the "hits" on my ADS-B traffic screen.

By the way, if you camp next to your plane, expect to be awakened early and often by people walking around the plane, wondering what it is, and commenting on how beautiful that airplane is! I parked right next to the gate, and definitely would have won a "dead grass" award if they gave them out at SnF... Lots of folks got to climb in and experience what a "luxury plane" feels like... (And more than one offered to buy me a cup of coffee for my "hospitality"...) It was quite an experience. I felt like a rock star, but it was really the Commander!

And DO NOT taxi over to the FBO for fuel. They charge a steep ramp fee! The guy next to me (in a Remos G3) filled up his tanks (maybe 15 gallons) and they charged him $150 ramp fee in addition to the cost of fuel. The truck that comes around offers the same fuel at the same price, minus the ramp fee.

That's a shame, hate the accident part but they put on a really good show.

Ken, you going to meet us at the Cross City VOR at 0900 on Friday?

Re: Sun n Fun 2018 April 10-15
