Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Possible & Probable this year.

I am in Florida already for the winter.
How crazy is the fly-in airport itself ? better to plan close-by ?

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Wx permitting, normally a camper (tent) but after seeing Oshkosh the 'Todd Hardin' way, may look into renting a place near by.:)

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

I'll be there, Tue & Wed. I had enough points on Southwest for a free ticket to MCO, so figured why not. I might extend my stay once I see the full schedule of workshops and other events.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Looked at the map. Its right next to Bartow.
I 'll leave the plane w/ Bill Turley for an oil change on my way up to new york.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

I am planning on flying down to Snf all week. Staying in campground. Never had a problem getting in and out of LAL, actually free parking vs. Winter Haven, and others that charge for the week.

I expect to be there one of the weekend days. Flying in is not too bad but be sure to get the packet and be thoroughly read on procedures . You will need to bring tie downs for the grass parking. It's a lot of fun. Short take off window if you plan to leave in the late afternoon before the night air show, which is awesome!!

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Sun-N-Fun was a blast both times I went, despite the tornado that struck the time I rented a camper instead of flying in. It's a well-run event, and probably about the size that OSH was 20-30 years ago... Plan to spend some time down in the Ultralight / Light Sport area to watch those guys fly - it's very entertaining.

First observation: Avoid the FBO ramp like the plague that it is... The guy who parked next to me flew a Remos LSA to the fly-in, and went directly to the FBO for gas. They charged him a ridiculous ramp fee (something like $50), which would only be waived if he bought about 3X as much fuel as his airplane would hold in total. So his 10-12 gallons of fuel wound up costing him almost a hundred bucks! Later, he saw the fuel truck coming up to airplanes that were tied down (fuel was the same price as at the FBO), and realized he could have just done that... The fuel truck will also bring your preferred oil to you, if you ask for that when you request the fuel. (But it's probably cheaper to buy it at one of the exhibitors...)

Second observation: If you camp next to your Commander, don't plan on getting a lot of sleep, or privacy. People were constantly coming up to the plane and walking around, talking and asking questions about it. Several times I was awakened during the night (like after 11 PM!) by people having (possibly slightly inebriated) conversations about the plane. Commanders are ramp magnets of the first order, and pilots just cannot help themselves!

I'm not sure if I can talk D'Ann into going to SNF, because she likes Oshkosh a lot, and doesn't really want to do TWO fly-ins in one year... But we'll see.

sounds like a velvet rope in addition to tie-downs should be on order ..

If your looking to stay a few days you might want to try airbnb.com. I have used them 3 times from renting a room or entire house. My daughter got me looking at them and it's worked out pretty good for me anyway. Not promoting them, just providing an option if you have not heard of them.

We use Airbnb all the time, that's who we used during Oshkosh and rented the entire house, we've used airbnb probably 20 times now and so far 100% perfect.

Jim,
Can relate to your 2d Observation, More of general airport noise than people bugging me. I mean at 1130 - 0100 someone was test running an F-16. Ouch!! And I use basic green Army cots in my tent and every time someone would roll over you can hear them squeak . .. But I'll do it again this year . . .;)

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Hey folks,

I'll be there this year. Probably camping with the airplane. Since we only live 20 mins away by air I may just set up camp and have the wife bring the car down. I went last yea just for the day and flying in is simple enough. Try to make it earlier in the am to avoid the rush. Except for when there are nite airshows scheduled getting out is a breeze if you just hang out 40 mins until the rush dies down.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

I plan to fly into Bartow and stay in the Bartow area. Use a car rental to get to SnF. Staying 7-8, coming home (KPMP) on the 9th.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Billy, half the fun is running the arrival NOTAM.

A few of us got cheated out of OSH last year and had to divert to a satellite field. As fate would have it, got to meet a fellow COG member face to face . . . (Rolf)

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

I've gotten very, very conservative in my post retirement old age. The Bartow route is pretty easy. Last year I flew into Tampa Executive and rented a car. Also very easy.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Gang,

Planning on arriving to SnF on Monday or Tuesday (April 4) and staying until Friday.

I'm staying in Lakeland. Probably flying into either LAL or Bartow (KBOW). Cheaper fuel at KBOW.

How about we setup a Commander dinner and drinks one night.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Phil,

I can plug KBOW - they have great service and some wonderful people. I was there last fall after the Commander Fly-In. They were great to take care of 42W and even pulled her into a hangar for me for free because of that pesky hurricane. They also have a really nice FBO.

Dean

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

Looks like I'll be there Wednesday and most of Thursday.

Re: Sun-N-Fun 2017 Apr 4-8

If any COG folks want to get together tomorrow (Wed) at S-n-F, I will plan on being at the food court around 12:30pm. There is seating immediately in front of the blue and yellow tourist information building (G14/G11 on the map; directly southwest of the Bose Plaza; directly southeast of the rear entrance to Hangar A (Trade-A-Plane); near tram station 25).
