Steam Train in Texas

I did something fun this past weekend. I saw a steam steam locomotive as it passed through Ft. Worth, Texas. The Union Pacific 844 was on it's way to Houston and then on to South Texas.

See the UP web site for details.

The shots from the air are from my airplane. Note the best shots with the sun to my back were taken head-to-head with a closure rate of more than 150 MPH! Used very fast shutter speed and telephoto lens. The only time I could get really low was when the train was passing the south end of Joe Pool lake and got down to about 250 ft above the farm field being plowed. You can tell we were low at that point since the assistant behind the left hand fireman (not engineer who sits on the right of the engine) is looking and waving at the plane as we passed by.

This is my first attempt to post pics on the new website, so hope it works... I read the FAQ's... If there is a more appropriate way to post, please reply with instructions.

Re: Steam Train in Texas

Graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate pics.
I have ridden the steam Loco that runs between Rusk and Palestine Texas. Great fun.
There is one running between Round Rock and Burnet Texas.
Would like to ride the one between Williams and the Grand Canyon Lodge Arizona.
There are great train vacations every where if you like it low and slow.
Thanks Jack.

Awesome pics Jack! If I tried that around here the Secret Service would be waiting for me me when I landed..... :)

Re: Steam Train in Texas

Very cool ... my Dad was a steam locomotive freak and hauled me all over the place looking at them as they vanished in the late 50's. It was exciting stuff and the whistles where incredible. Great job with the picks.

Re: Steam Train in Texas

Beautiful....Sometimes with progress we don't know what we're losing until much later...

Re: Steam Train in Texas

Fantastic! My wife and I flew to Williams AZ in '07 and rode the steam Locomotive to the Grand Canyon. It was a really fun time that I want to repeat.

Re: Steam Train in Texas

Outstanding pics. I havn't gotten a single picture from the air yet that I'd care to show anyone... I need a new camera, or maybe a new hand and eye combo. If I was at 250 agl and trying shoot photos through a telephoto lens 'ol 297J would probably be riding in the coal car.
