Hi all!
Long time blog reader first time poster!
The plane in the picture has been rescued by me.
With the help of Judi I purchased it last winter from a very nice woman (teresa Stein) from Long Island. It was evident it had been a sitter! After the purchase it took almost another month and a half to get it to my home airport(5B2). One of the local mechanics on Long Island stated that the plane would need a top overhaul ($10,000) at the very least before he would even consider signing off on a ferry permit! The exact wording was "he was concerned about the cam being rotten." The previous owner had a falling out with the gentlemen and taxied the plane across the airport to a different mechanic. Where the guy did a basic pre buy inspection for me using the list from the COG website. The logs were reviewed by my local shop and one of the guys went to check the plane for a ferry permit. After log reviews, run-ups it was found to have frozen split fuel line from a loose fitting fuel cap. A second once over and the ferry permit was obtained!
On arrival to 5B2 it went though a full tare down! The gear was completely disassembled and everything was replaced with kits from Jim at Aerodyme. The engine was also gone thru looking for that "rotten cam" it was a total waste of time and money! The engine was fine!!! Now I have peace of mind!
The fuel tanks have been opened, cleaned, and resealed! The plane was stripped, checked for corrosion and painted!
Next is interior and new avionics!
As for the tail # it is N1375J
The plane was spotted in Vermont were it was painted!
I can't say enough good things about the guys at the paint shop!!!!
While that has been going on I purchased a used exhaust system from another COG member and sent it to a guy that I worked with in the past from Powerflow about a new exhaust system! Being new to posting I am not even going to try to attach any pictures!
The COG site is fantastic!
I have met a few of you last year at the Sky acres fly in!
Great group! Very friendly even though I showed up in a Cherokee!
Plan on bring the commander this year!
Fred

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

Frank, I think that anyone who rescues a Commander, especially to the level you have done here, deserves a HUGE round of thanks from all of us. That paint job just blows me away. Stunning. Cannot wait to see it in person!

Wonderful job.

p.s. how cool it is to read, "I can't say enough good things about the guys in the paint shop!" That is so unusual. Let us know the name of the shop. Sounds like they deserve to be commended in public.

Outstanding Fred! A bunch of us NECOGers sadly watched her sitting outside of T5 for years, apparently moving only for annual. (Frank-Boy, correct me if I'm wrong and she wasn't the Green Monster). Great to see you resurrected her.
We remember the Cherokee at Sky Acres too! Glad you pulled the trigger on a Commander. Just yell with any questions! You are welcome any time at 44N, Under an hour south for you.
Best of luck with her.

Does powerflow have an exhaust system for this plane?? Steve

(Frank-Boy, correct me if I'm wrong and she wasn't the Green Monster)

No correction required.

Remarkable transformation, and interesting to hear about the engine teardown not finding any problems. Not sure if I want to pass that along to Ed (the A/P that declared it rotten).

I think Ed should know...his tactics alienate mucho business opportunities in my humble opinion!

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

O ... M ... G ... they person who came up with that must have had avocado and burnt orange appliances at home. That award I wanted to give you should be tripled. Just amazing.

p.s. I don't know Ed ... but I know him as there are many like him around. My guess he would just say "oh bull*bleep**bleep**bleep**bleep*" and it would just drive him further into self-justification. He'd say the other mechanic didn't know squat.

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

Pchaser, great job and a big congrats. I'm sorry if I revealed your baby to early. I used to work with Mike at J&M Aviation in Middlebury. And when I saw that I was very impressed. I told Mike he needs to put that on the website asap!

Hey Fred, check your private messages...:o

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

As it stands officially with Powerflow at this time they do not have a certified exhaust system! They do have STC's and performance stats for the engine in other makes of planes with the same engine! They also have taken the exhaust that was sent to them and are able to fabricate a system that fits in the same restraints! I spoke to Carl about eight months ago and was hoping that he would be bringing something to us in a competitive price with the performance improvement that we have come to expect from PowerFlow.
Carl winter is coming quickly to us in the north and the stock exhaust/heater is lousy! Are you any closer?

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

Fred, you have done an amazing job with your new bird. Beautiful paint. Can you narrow that paint shop down for those of us who might want to spend some money there? Hopefully they treated you right on the price. What a transformation. Thanks for bringing her back to share in the future!

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

I thought that was the Green Monster, there's another green commander on Long Island??

Re: Spotted at Oakland Oct 11

BTW, I know Ed. A former Eastern Airline Mech. Straight Shooter. If he told me there MIGHT be something wrong with my engine, I would have him look at it and satisify himself that all was well. Your life, the lives of your loved ones, and others on the ground depend on Good Mx. Just lost another airplane today in Florida, Pilot and person on the ground. Glad all was well on your teardown, but as a person who make my living in the air, there's no such thing as wasted money on maintenance

Well, Ed's reaction doesn't seem completely out of character and I certainly wouldn't want to be within 30 miles of ground zero when someone advised him about the outcome. [emoji57]

And Fred, congrats on a nice Commander Rescue.
