Southwest Ontario Fly-In on September 2nd

Shout out to any Canadian Commanders around Southwest Ontario and any of our US cousins close by.

We are planning a small fly-in at CYXU (London, Ontario) for Sunday September 2nd at noon.

Plan is lunch at the Katana Cafe and a group photo at the ESSO FBO where we can all park.

If you are interested, please PM me at tonyvarga@mail.com or reply here so I can take a census.

The Katana Cafe is fairly small and gets prickly when too many people show up !! Right now, we have a table booked for ten and five confirmed Commanders WX permitting of course !

I would love to come over but I did BasicMED last year and from what I hear Canada is not recognizing that. I just read that the Bahamas are. Any chance Canada will come around?

It's a really nice restaurant and under normal conditions, not a big deal when 2 or 4 folks show up (we fly for food). I have been told to call first and make a reservation. When we expect a larger group, we have to manage these folks to keep everyone happy.

The food is really great and the service quite fast.

Scott, I did a bit of reading and the BasicMED seems to be somewhat equivalent to our Class 4 medical and COPA is advocating for similar 'reciprocity' to allow entry and overflight. The alignment of our licenses and medicals seem to depart below the PPL and the Class 3 medical.

Thanks Tony. I still do overflight on my way to somewhere else and unless I have an emergency landing, its not a problem. They do not ask for Medical classification for overflight. Let me know if you here the reciprocity goes into effect.

So, if you need to do an emergency landing in Canada, they won't let you if you don't have a 3rd Class medical? Or do they not let you depart? The former sounds impossible, and the latter seems silly. Either way you still have a legally issued US license so why does Canada care about your medical status?

I was at the Medical Examiner today and asked him about this. He said as long as you're flying a U.S. registered aircraft, you're ok. You just can't fly a Canadian registered aircraft with BasicMED in Canada.

Whoa! That would be great. Thanks for passing that on. I am going to call AOPA and get their opinion just to be sure. I will pass that on to the group. But I could always say, "Hey ... this Canuk friend of mine's Canadian Doctor said it was fine!"

Well .... I am guessing you are referring to the gang on our Tour of Great Lakes about 10 or 12 years back? We made it clear to everyone to pay attention to the country border over the lake and the Detroit River, plus Lake St. Clair. You could fly that all in U.S. airspace. But no one from the Detroit area ever worris about flying over Canadian airspace a bit on the way to anywhere else in the U.S. No one seems to care. Of course, if you landed in Canada, that's a different story. Now, if you file IFR east out of the Detroit Area, you will be routed over Canuk airspace (to or from) about 75% of the time. Nothing is ever said or asked if your departure and destination airports are U.S. Because ATC is vectoring you, if you made an emergency landing in Ontario, I really don't think it would be a problem. Wandering around VFR though off a flight plan, yeah, that could get dicey.

The problem on that trip, Pat, was that a couple of our guys wandered too far into Canuk airspace and did not stay grouped up. I had to make the call to Detroit Approach on the ground, but no consequence. They just gave us a friendly reminder! maybe today would be different.

That is an interesting comment from your Medical Examiner. I am quite sure you can not fly a Canadian registered aircraft in Canada with any FAA issued license. You must have a Canadian license. In the US, you must have an FAA issued license to fly a US registered aircraft, as well.

Guys,

I have both licenses, which allows me to rent US registered aircraft while on vacations. One factoid for our Canadian friends with US licenses, when renting a N registered aircraft, the flight school wanted to ensure that I had a current bi annual flight review in my log book. In Canada, we can maintain flight currency many different ways, only 1 off which (being the BFR ground and flight) count for US currency. So ... every 2 years, I do a US BFR.

The more the merrier. That said, my wife won’t be coming. Maybe my son (also a licensed pilot).
