Re: Slow down sister
Jim -'The Good Ole Days': Nov 6 1979, Took another Principal (female) and 2 female HS students in my 'Aviation class' with me 'for Dinner at Washington Nationsl'. Had my 172 since Feb , used to fly 75-100 hrs yr. Was based at BWI 'Friendship' --all thia way Pre the big International Terminal. Mix with Jets all the time.
Anyway, flew over to Bay Bridge MD29 for cheap gas, then headed to DC National. Only Restricted area then was essentually -The Mall: Capital blg to Lincoln Memorial, White Hoyse to Jefferson Memorial. Washington Monument in middle. Was making the Famous 'River Approah', as in Potomac River. The entry intersection was NW near the American Legion Beltway Bridge, and ya followed the River SE, which 1/2 mile out became 'the R Base leg for Rnwy 15. About 200 ft AGL, Tower asks me to "do a R 360 'for fast traffic" ( behind me).
I said "Please confirm you want me to do a R 360 over The Pentagon and renter Final..
TOWER ''AFFIRMATIVE'.
So I did, coming around, your over Roslyn/Arlington VA.
Re-entered Final, landed, We all had Dinner.in the Terminal. Years later one of my students bought a condo in Roslyn, inspired by her 1st flight. Very successful Gal, managed Niche Restaurants for years, then joined Hilton in San Francisco, been a Law Office Mgr last 17 years.
A few years later, 1990,now had COMMNDER 4531W, my Mother, retired DOD /Air Force, caught a cheap from OKC not to BWI, but to DC National via Memphis. Bumpy summer afternoon, Flew the.River approach again. On final Tower asks me "To expedite landing". As I turned off to GA parking, Tower says "Good Job Commander "
That was neat. Go over to the main Terminal, met Mom and we go back to Butler I think it was. They had my PM bottle refilled. Mom says "You can fly in here? I said Sure, for you. She said " I thought only the President flew in here". I said "Your more important that the President."
We took off and I flew over to Bay Bridge Airport, where the Seafood Restaurant HEMMING WAY right on the Chesapeake by theBridge had a Limo that picked you up at the airport which was/is adjacent. For $1.
Treated Us to Dinner on the Drck, watching the sunset across the Chesapeake and watching the now gone 5 tal Annapolis radio Towers flash their Red Tower Tip lights.
Flew back to grass strip Hays Field MD24 ( long gone too) over the Paraiso River to Baltimore Harbor, where Ft McHenry started Flag Day fireworks, just as we approached the Fort. Was fitting celebration for Mom's Visit.
That August, made my 2nd Commander flight to Oklahoma. 1st was when I bought it for tgeWing Spar Mod.
Yup , the Good Ole Days. However, we have Grand Oaks Plantation and PIM coming up and we'll all make some Great 'Modern Memories'!
