I am a relatively new pilot so when I was told by ATC to hold short, I hold short! Well, unbeknownst to me, a heavy was right behind me. ATC was so good. He told me "there is no rush, proceed to line up on 16, when ready, ignore the big boy behind you! It's the small things that make this flying hobby so enjoyable:cool:

Re: Slow down sister

Guaranteed he probably wished he was flying the Commander ! He gets 2 minutes of stick time....

Re: Slow down sister

Much better to have the heavy behind than in front. Sometimes there're unaware of the smaller plane behind. I've seen a few get blown around a good but by exhaust.

Re: Slow down sister

A 'few' years ago I'd rigged my unit's Attack Helo's with a full VOR/ILS. "Hey! a big deal for the Army drivers - who must maintain Instrument proficiency throughout the year. The old Cobra Op's manual recommends 100Kts for instrument approaches but she was fairly stable at 120.
On one occasion we had a young lad on the controls who was constantly flying the approach between 65 and 90 knots. El Paso approach kept trying/hinting for him to keep his speed up as we had landing traffic to our rear.
After multiple hints, Approach final gave up and said, 'if you don't maintain your speed you are about to be eaten by a Whale . . ."

We finally hit the marker, I took the controls and cleared the approach path only to have Shamu whiz past us . . .

Re: Slow down sister

GREAT STORY......that young Lad probably looked over at Commander Wright and said "Sir what does that mean".....I'd love to have been there on that flight John just to see what kind of response you got from a rookie about to be eaten by a whale:D:D

Re: Slow down sister

Years ago, I was stationed at Ft Ord in California. We did a lot of PAR and GSR approaches with the Air Force and Navy controllers at the various bases in CA. In a great display of "inter-service cooperation", we would have our OPS guys call ahead to let them know we were coming, so they could get their "newbies" in the radar shack for the training experience. The fast-movers blast through the approach in a matter of a few seconds, whereas we could fly the approach as slow as 45 knots, if they wanted us to... Gave the new kids a LOT more practice.

But I will confess to always getting a serious case of the "Willies" when the "experienced guy" would come on the radio and vector us 90 degrees away from the final approach course for a few minutes, then bring us back on a few minutes later... I knew that they were moving us temporarily out of the way so they could get a "fast mover" in around us to avoid delaying them. Once in a while, we would actually see them pass as we were vectored back to a parallel course.

Ah, the good old days...! Now most of those bases (including Ft Ord) are closed / inactive.

Jim -'The Good Ole Days': Nov 6 1979, Took another Principal (female) and 2 female HS students in my 'Aviation class' with me 'for Dinner at Washington Nationsl'. Had my 172 since Feb , used to fly 75-100 hrs yr. Was based at BWI 'Friendship' --all thia way Pre the big International Terminal. Mix with Jets all the time.

Anyway, flew over to Bay Bridge MD29 for cheap gas, then headed to DC National. Only Restricted area then was essentually -The Mall: Capital blg to Lincoln Memorial, White Hoyse to Jefferson Memorial. Washington Monument in middle. Was making the Famous 'River Approah', as in Potomac River. The entry intersection was NW near the American Legion Beltway Bridge, and ya followed the River SE, which 1/2 mile out became 'the R Base leg for Rnwy 15. About 200 ft AGL, Tower asks me to "do a R 360 'for fast traffic" ( behind me).

I said "Please confirm you want me to do a R 360 over The Pentagon and renter Final..
TOWER ''AFFIRMATIVE'.

So I did, coming around, your over Roslyn/Arlington VA.
Re-entered Final, landed, We all had Dinner.in the Terminal. Years later one of my students bought a condo in Roslyn, inspired by her 1st flight. Very successful Gal, managed Niche Restaurants for years, then joined Hilton in San Francisco, been a Law Office Mgr last 17 years.

A few years later, 1990,now had COMMNDER 4531W, my Mother, retired DOD /Air Force, caught a cheap from OKC not to BWI, but to DC National via Memphis. Bumpy summer afternoon, Flew the.River approach again. On final Tower asks me "To expedite landing". As I turned off to GA parking, Tower says "Good Job Commander "

That was neat. Go over to the main Terminal, met Mom and we go back to Butler I think it was. They had my PM bottle refilled. Mom says "You can fly in here? I said Sure, for you. She said " I thought only the President flew in here". I said "Your more important that the President."

We took off and I flew over to Bay Bridge Airport, where the Seafood Restaurant HEMMING WAY right on the Chesapeake by theBridge had a Limo that picked you up at the airport which was/is adjacent. For $1.

Treated Us to Dinner on the Drck, watching the sunset across the Chesapeake and watching the now gone 5 tal Annapolis radio Towers flash their Red Tower Tip lights.

Flew back to grass strip Hays Field MD24 ( long gone too) over the Paraiso River to Baltimore Harbor, where Ft McHenry started Flag Day fireworks, just as we approached the Fort. Was fitting celebration for Mom's Visit.

That August, made my 2nd Commander flight to Oklahoma. 1st was when I bought it for tgeWing Spar Mod.
Yup , the Good Ole Days. However, we have Grand Oaks Plantation and PIM coming up and we'll all make some Great 'Modern Memories'!

Re: Slow down sister

sort of related...
I was approaching Newcastle at night with layers of stratus and rain and talking to a newby tower controller on the radio. Then had an E.T. / Speilberg experience as the air lit up around me with lights passing to my right as the 757 went around. I had no idea he was there until he came on the tower frequency from the approach controller.
