signature map of states you have flown to

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

I know what you mean Dave

Feel like that guy with the AT&T map in all of the commercials. "Am I blocking??"

Also reminds me of a true soldiers story.

After WW II, Lord Mountbatten was reviewing the troops. He was resplendant in full dress uniform with a dashing sash and three and a half rows of medals and ribbons. As he walked along the reviewing line he stopped in front of a lowly private who had one lonely medal attached to his chest. Mountbatten leans over and inspects the medal with a frown of displeasure on his face.
"Soldier, where did you get that medal?" he demands
The poor private who was unaccostomed to being addressed by such high estate and always seemed to be getting in trouble for something, squirmed and sweated under the beady eye. "Tripoli, Sir" he answered.
Mountbatten looked at the sweating soldier "Harrumph! I don't have that one! Good lad!" and continued on.

So whoever gets Hawaii, even if he gets no other, can look at the rest of us 'cos we know we will never have it.

Well, that Bailey guy is showing Hawaii filled in on his map. Not sure how he got a Commander over there. Maybe it was a rental?

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Surely if there was a Commander on Hawaii, someone on this board would know about it. What we need to do is

A. Find out if there is a Commander in Hawaii somewhere.
B. Do a fly-in to San Diego
C. Fly Commercial to Hawaii and rent the Commander from the guy/girl (providing there is one there. Then, for mere 10 AMU's apiece, we could color in our maps.

now, now... it was fully disclosed that I had merely landed there in an aircraft I was piloting that was not my Commander. The rules of engagement were subsequently modified from landings only to landings in a Commander; so now I have to do my map over again. Your patience will be rewarded w/ a blank HI.

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Better now?

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Since I just got my commander and FINALLY yesterday finished my insurance dual hours, (longest 10 hours of dual in the history of flight it seems like) I guess technically now I have to re-do my map as well since up till yesterday, all my solo time has been in a Skyhawk XP. I didn't have that many states colored in anyway.

The real bummer is, tomorrow, I'm doing a Pilots & Paws flight from ASL to DTN to DHT. (Marshall TX to Shreveport LA Downtown to Dalhart TX then back to ASL). I'm going to fly 973 miles and only pick up 1 state. Louisiana.

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Congrats Byrne!
Man, I wish I could get 10 Hrs up in my plane right now! Weather is horrible!

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Boy, tell me about it!

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

65 & sunny, wind at 5 kts from 360 almost straight down runway 33. I had to skip out at lunch and get a couple of hours in. Sorry guys... had to rub it in just a bit.

Did you at least cross the border into Oklahoma or Arkansas? Looks like they are both short hops for you from KASL.

And you would have added more colors to your map while burning that fuel. :)

(Just checked and see now that Missouri is only about a 1hr hop for you too.)

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Planning a fuel stop in Marshall on the way to the east coast , the beginning of may. Looks like fuel is pretty reasonable there.

Fuel in Marshall is $3.80... Fly 20 miles south to Panola County (Sharp Field) (4F2) and it's only $3.20.

I crossed over into Louisiana but didn't land. I was mainly getting my tanks topped off and playing with the GPS... Lots of buttons, 600 page manual... I like my portable a whole lot better but I've got to learn the one in the plane. I was supposed to make a dog run (pilots 'n paws) to Dalhart but the shelter in Shreveport didn't get the health certificates done so now I'm looking at making that 980 mile trip on Saturday.

Since i'll be so close, and it will be Saturday, I'll probably hop over into New Mexico, up into Colorado, over into Oklahoma, then back home. Then I can get 4 states added in one trip.

Going to get some seat time Friday or Saturday Bill, thats for sure! Weather looks good this weekend. Can't wait! I lived in Seattle for a while and I honestly believe Ohio rivals there weather easily.

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Byrne.

Carthage Texas has to be my favorite stopping place, When I was only two months into Commander ownership I took my first trip from Georgia to Las Vegas. Carthage was my first fuel stop and a learning experience. I had studied air nav for days and 4F2 was the place to stop.

After delays I arrived just at dark, tied down the plane. Walked out to the main road and looked at my very heavy AOPA directory, town was two miles West of the Airport. So I set off walking, suitecase in one hand and heavy laptop in the other. What is two miles to walk, After about three miles on no cars offering a lift I got out my torch and the airport directory again. I had made a mistake, the airport was two miles West of town.

So five miles walk later I arrived at the first red light. Entered a burger joint and asked about a taxi. Was told that I was in East Texas. No taxis. Called the Holiday Inn Express to be told that they did not pick up. So another two mile walk to the motel.

At 5 am the next morning I was looking for a ride to the airport. No taxi service, called the sherrifs dept only to be told walking was the only way. They told me about a limo service, after waking the man up he advised that he was 60 miles away and not interested.

The Holiday Inn did not provide service to the airport as they explained that Carthage did not have an airport. They refused to listen to my arguement that I had a plane at the Carthage airport. At 6 am I left the motel and decided to take a short cut and follow the power lines that went in the general direction. My suitecas and lap top were getting very heavy to carry, I threw away my heavy AOPA airport directory. A lot of blood and brambles later I arrived at the airport. I arrived about 8 am during a rain storm. Fueled up and was ready to leave. Next stop being Clovis NM.

The rain ceased and the runway became coverd in great big black birds, I would start of down the runway and scare away the bird, time and time again. By the time I got back and ready for my takeoff roll the birds were back again. Not on the grass but on the runway.

This went on for so long that I went back to the pump and topped off. Eventually got off about 11 am and headed for New Mexico.

I have been back to Carthage many times, but only for fuel.

It is a great little airport.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken Andrew.

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

Don't get me started Ken..... I moved here 12 years ago. I have more employees on the payroll than I know people by first name in this town. Now, that might mean I'm an anti-social a*s-Ho*e, or it could mean that Carthage is just about what you thought it was as you were fighting your way through the brambles on the way back to the airport....

Verdicts still out but I'll let you make up your mind if we ever meet up at a fly-in.

Next time you come through Carthage, let me know... I'll pick you up at the airport..oh wait, we don't have an airport.

ROFLMAO :)
Ken, maybe you should stay out of the fields. Nothing good ever happens to you in the countryside. You certainly can bring the imagery to the story.

Re: signature map of states you have flown to

I think Ken should draft a book or two. We have an Andy Rooney in the making.
