There has been a gig every year for the last 20 years at SMX on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Spring. This began with the Compuserve aviation forum called Avsig which is now on the web as www.avsig.org. It was a group composed of people involved in computers and aviation and SMX-gig was started by Mike Busch who is known as one of the leaders of the Cessna Pilots Association and who also gives a course on owner maintenance several times a year (not just for Cessnas). This group originally included Barry Schiff and many of the people whose names are familiar writing articles for AOPA, IFR and Flying magazines as well as air traffic controllers and GAMIjectors' George Braly. Over the years SMX-gig expanded to all pilots and although the big-name folks have not attended in the most recent years, SMX-gig remains a fun gathering for pilots from places as far as Boston, Minneapolis, Chicago and even Australia in addition to the California contingent. With its hotel and two restaurants on the field, SMX is ideally suited for fly-in gigs. For more info on the activities and to register for the gig in June, go to www.smxgig.org. This will be my 16th year going and during all that time I have usually been the only Commander on the field; it would be great to spend time with some of the Commander.org members!
