Safety Alert

Re: Safety Alert

I would hope that any of us who found an area in our plane looking THAT scary would immediately post pictures and recommend we all inspect. The phrase "I see dead people" comes to mind when looking at those pictures."

Thanks, Jim.

Re: Safety Alert

Obviously, Agree with all shared. Just have to say "Who was inspecting that aircraft all these years" ?
Don't expect answer, just like Jim, Joel & Pete said-Flight control systems essential to be properly checked. How could someone not feel something not normal? Gorilla -many meanings there.
THANKS JIM!!!

Re: Safety Alert

Certainly worthy of inspection at every annual just like all bellcranks, torque/push tubes, cables , fittings, etc. As long as the SDR for this single aircraft and the current FAA fervor over fatigue analysis for aging airframes doesn't result in a mandatory eddy current inspection of the tube in every aircraft, it should be no problem. A reasonable visual inspection should be adequate in this case.

Please don't get me wrong, I agree that if there is a problem it needs to be addressed however the scenario Bill describes is what worries me, call it over-reaction. Everyone should be having this part of the aircraft inspected annually anyway, I would be very disappointed in my engineer if it isn't. I just don't think I could face another round of trauma. Perhaps it is time to move onto something newer and supported by the manufacturer.

Re: Safety Alert

Hi Joel,

Thanks very much for checking your airplane! Others?

It was actually the other crank that failed, did you inspect both sides?

It is the LH pedal support shaft, but the crank is on the right hand side of the tunnel.

Re: Safety Alert

Dear Jim and all other Commanderites,

Thank you Jim for immediately sending out a potential life saving notice based on an operating experience finding. For all, our maintenance specialist performed a detailed visual inspection of the suspect areas an found no issues. The areas are in pristine condition.

All the best,

Petr

Hi All,-----Check your airplanes:-------

Jim,
I gather that you do not want a survey at this point from everyone. Only if we find broken welds. (Mine was clean and intact.)

Safety Alert

Pristine here as well. No evidence of corrosion or damage to tubes, brackets, or welds. TT on airframe 4944.

Given the location of the distal ends of the main tube, it seems reasonable that if a subject aircraft was "wet" due to poor seals around the windshield, etc. it would be relatively easy for moisture to accumulate on the interior of the tube (or exterior surface particularly if the insulation promoted wicking the moisture from the interior face of the fuselage skin to the end of the tube.). In those cases, would expect to observe corrosion issues in a number of areas in the footwells.

Re: Safety Alert

I'm not going to call mine pristine but both arms are still welded strong.

Airframe has 3750 hrs.

Re: Safety Alert

Dye pen checked mine today. Was working under the panel today anyway figured I'd have a look see.cleaned and touched up paint. All good here. 114B 1870TT.

Re: Safety Alert

In case any one wants a closer look at those welds, I took a few pictures of an extra set of tubes that I had on hand.

Re: Safety Alert

Thanks Glenn, very helpful.

Re: Safety Alert

Hi All,

Only a few inspection reports thus far, helpful, but not statistically significant.
Can we get some more?

Thanks,
Jim
