AN ASIDE. Here we were all planned out for a trip to VAGAR AND THEN ICELAND. The Faroese are repairing the runway and most metars say runway closed. That's pretty much the way it is. Scheduled flights only. Not getting replies to e-mails requesting that I arrive at the same time as the scheduled service...May require five or six hours notice to get PPR and in the Faroes a lot can happen to the weather in that time not to forget volcanoes. Going to head off to France next week if anyone is around. AOPA discount fuel in the Channel Isles and then go get some sun and wine, or is it wine and sun?

Re: AN ASIDE - Iceland

Rob, are you going to the COG Fly-in this year?
Jackie and I have our flights booked, I know you attended last year so just wondered.

We have had a couple of trips to France this year, we went in to Deuville a few weeks ago.

Hi John,

I'm seriously thinking about it. I was checking out flights thru Jacksonville this morning. I missed last year. We had a flood that trashed the building shortly before the date I was due to travel and I just had to stay to sort things out. But, again thinking about it.

I'll be in Guernsey at ASG tomorrow lunchtime then briefly back up to Scotland. I had a fuel leak that was traced to two loose rivets but difficult to locate wthout the inspection hatches off - now fixed and tested. Now I have charts available for Norway, Ireland and France and am just itching to get going. My pal and I think we'll head south on Sunday. Our Norwegian Commander owner colleague offered to propose a route. I was looking at the steep ILS into Tromso, the prospect of midnight sun and the fabulous scenery...

I was alternatively thinking of a little test flying. How many bottles of inexpensive extremely high quality locally bought champagne can you get in the luggage compartment of a Commander? There does not appear to be a mark on the CRP 5 that covers number of bottles v 200lb weight.

I am a big fan of the aviation community off shore. Things just get done, no problem. Was it you that mentioned the Islands registration? The idea may have some advantages if it can be done for bona fide reasons.... Jim Richardson's big engine for example is opposed by EASA on noise grounds I think. As far as I could tell, my 114B sounds louder than Mike's Super Commander. I'm not sure what is going on there. Maybe its the different prop. An islands Reg would probably allow that installation. An N- obviously does. I'm not sure I could handle the hassle of a change to the N- register though. So, EASA politics interfering temporarily with progress as often happens I guess.

On the other hand I was quite impressed by the Super Commander performance. Climb out at 80 knots on full power and the Commander feels quite "sporty" :-)

And the COG Fly-in? probably !!!

Rob,
No, it wasn't me who mentioned Island reg. Maybe it was Lawrence.
Give my regards to the guy's at ASG, I dont think we will make it to the Islands this year.

EASA are EASA, nothing they do makes any sense to me. I refuse to do anymore changes to my plane, life too short to go through all the hassle.

I have never flown in a Super Commander but I hope to soon. Mike promised me a flight in his if we ever manage to meet up. I have missed him on a couple of visits to Guernsey.

Hope to see you in the US.

Re: AN ASIDE - Iceland

Greetings from the islands! It's certainly less bureaucratic here and then there's the cheaper fuel. Regrettably, our time here is nearly up and it's back to Fairoaks for the winter.

I may be over in Guernsey at ASG later this afternoon so may bump into you

Keith (G-KEEF)

Any of you gents (or gentle ladies) arriving commercially from great distances... if you need/like AC11 ferrying to the Brunswick/Jekyll area, give us a heads up and we should be able to coordinate a ride for you.

Re: AN ASIDE - Iceland

Thanks for the offer Bill, we will be flying into Miami and spending some time with Richard & Patricia Rolland.
The plan is to fly upto Jekyl Island in his plane.
I can't wait!!

Re: AN ASIDE - Iceland

If any international visitors take up Ken on his offer to stay with him, I will come pick them up and take them to Jeckyl. Also open for rides from Jacksonville or even Orlando if need be.

Should I pack my Skyhook?

Seriously, that's a great offer. Will confirm shortly too !

And Keith, sorry, missed you but had an excellent meal at La Napolitan - seafood and a wonderful view out the picture postcard window.
