Re: Oshkosh 2017

Gang,

I'm thinking of heading over on Sunday and staying until Wednesday or Thursday.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Will we be able to park the cog members in the same place?

Re: Oshkosh 2017

EAA added a provision this year that you can reserve a parking area for a group. I think it is too late to do it now.
We plan to fly up early only to reserve a camp site at Scholler

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Waffled on the plans for OSH17 but now that it's almost here I can't resist & I've decided to fly-in from SLC, UT. Heading that way on Saturday morning 7/22 and will be there, likely camping in the North 40 thru probably Thursday/Friday.

Hope to see a good contingent of Commanders on the field.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

It's a wise idea to get there Saturday, several of
us were diverted to Fon Du Lac on Monday 2016.
It wasn't so bad as I was rescued from my mosquito
infested campsite by a couple of Alabama boys...
good times. FYI Sherman, they don't spray for bugs
down there. From now on, if I'm planning on camping,
I will get there Friday or Saturday. I was spoiled
years ago when could park in Showplane camping
with Dad's Ercoupe. It was almost like reserved
parking! I hope to sneak over on Monday the 24th for the day.

For future reference, I have a line on a whole house in
Oshkosh for next year. The female owner strongly dislikes
dealing with traffic... I don't know any other details about it yet.

Roger, if you have to stop in Brainerd Mn or at KANE in
Mpls on your way, don't hesitate to contact me.( If you need
any help that is.) I'll be up at the cabin all this week just a few miles
from Brainerd. I'm thinking a pm would work best, I'll watch the forum.
It never hurts to have friends in low places (flatlands).

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Rolf,
How long will you be at the cabin? Did you fly and land nearby??

I'm kind of feeling like Roger, as the event is getting closer so is the urge to attend.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Rolf, hopefully I won't need the assistance but good to know it's available. Thanks!

Yes, I got caught up in the madhouse arrival Sunday morning last year when the weather finally broke and every plane started towards Ripon. Absolutely want to be on the ground this year looking up at the arrivals by Sunday in case there's a repeat of the same craziness. I really don't want to go through that type of trauma enroute to Oshkosh ever again.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

John, Ann and I fly up to KAIT near Brainerd mainly just July and August.
We rent a hangar for these two months to protect the airplane. Today we
had a gorgeous day on the water, high 80's but a T-storm rolled through
late afternoon so once again the hangar rent pays off! We are fortunate enough
to have an extra car to leave in the hangar to transport us to the lake.

I am thinking of flying to Airventure on Monday super early (just for the day).
Are you thinking you really want to go?
I'd love to spend the entire week watching airplanes fly by, but I didn't
schedule the week as vacation this year, so a day or two will have to suffice.

If I think back to December when I planned out my vacations,
I was thinking of Triple Tree SC then Norman Ok then Ft Collins as
a long cross-country. Thus forgoing Airventure. The best laid plans of mice and men...

Fly safe and keep in touch.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Will we be able to park the cog members in the same place?

The only way to do that is if you all fly in at the same time, and that won't happen.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Gang,

Last year, I had to divert to Fondu Lac as well. We were abeam Fondu Lac, inbound to KOSH, just as they closed KOSH down (super windy, torrential rain, etc). Turned onto the downwind at Fondu Lac and left the bird their for the duration of the trip.

Due to work constraints, my plans have changed. I expect to get into KOSH Wednesday night and stay until Saturday. I'll be staying at the University.

If you guys want to get together for drinks/dinner on Thursday or Friday night, let me know and we can plan something out.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

For those who get to Oshkosh early. The mass arrivals is one of the best events at the show. It is fun to compare the skill level of the different aircraft owners. You watch and make your own judgment.
I must say, several years ago the Bonanzas had a record number of over 100 in mass. They landed on 36; formations of 3, one long, one short, and one on the taxiway. They landed each group in exactly 20 second separation. They were precise. The last couple years, they have not been as organized.
They were the best, some of the other groups, maybe not so good.

Aircraft Mass Arrivals Coming to Oshkosh Before AirVenture
Although plenty of aircraft of all shapes and sizes will be heading to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017, some airplane types will be arriving the weekend prior to the event in big groups.

Piper Cherokees will arrive on Saturday, July 22 at 11 a.m., followed by Beechcraft Bonanzas at 1 p.m., and Cessnas at 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Piper Cubs will begin arriving at 7 a.m., while a Cirrus group will arrive at 7:30 a.m. followed by Mooneys at 11 a.m. which will conclude the scheduled mass arrivals.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Wow, 100 in mass - that would take a bit of coordination on a rally point and formation form-up.

Last year Todd Hardin and I thought we'd be big dogs coming in with two AC11's. Fate would have it we were diverted to Fond Du Loc on the morning of DAY ONE.(felt cheated) but we did get to meet Rolf Ringgold (MN) and departed Fond Du Loc as a formation of three.
Hey!, we got an Atta boy from the mobile tower . . . .:D

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Hey John, I'm going to buzz over Monday for the day, fly into Mpls Sunday night

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Hosting our usual Gathering Friday evening for anyone around. Lonnie will be there this year and Sid and Sherman almost always. Mike Wetherbee, I think. Usually, pick up 3 or 4 more. All welcome. Informal. We will have some things but if you bring something to drink for yourself and something to throw on the grill that is helpful. But we will at least have beer and sausages! snacks, etc. Always have Scotch and Colorado Whiskey.

Feel free to call or text to me: 248.390.0773 or my son, Conor, 248.390.0062. Text is usually better especially if the airshow is going on.

OUCH Roger:eek::D, it's only Tuesday you better slow down and put the bottle down for a little while. I didn't think they started serving alcohol until after 6:00 pm each night at Osh and that was only 3 hours ago...you've must have taken your own with you:eek::p

Re: Oshkosh 2017

You tell em Todd! Sid flew to OSH Saturday, so he should be there. I had to forego this year due to Family coming Northeast and 'stuff happens'. However, Commanders were never at Oshkosh like our own COG flyins.

Even in the early 90s, only a few of us were there, and those were the days that CAC was our coordinating ' Entity'. In '90 there were 3 of us, '92-'94 just 3 total, so cool out Rog. In '14, we had 6 Commanders on the N 40 and 12 (Pat?) COG members.so more recently.
After all, Commanders are 'Eye Candy', and we don't want to be Cessna, B-sch-eech or Schmoony anyway. We know what we have and That's all that matters.

After two weeks of 95-100 (107 deg-115 deg Real Feel temps), I sure appreciate that Sid sent us OSH 81 deg temps. This evening (76 deg), I was able to install the two repaired Gauges back into the panel. Too young to deal with salty sweat burning my eyes while contortioning under the panel. Great to feel like a human being again.

OSH- I am waiting for confirmation that there really is (Thanks to EAA and FAA recert common sense) now ( per Plane & Pilot report) a 2k Autopilot for Part 23.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Cessna, Mooney, Bonanzas, Cirrus, mass arrivals each individually rivaled the entire global Commander fleet. I sat in nice new modern, two-door Mooney who as a functioning resurrected manufacturer has a significant presence here yet nothing seems to be coming from Norman, OK that's in any way tangible. Sorry but I didn't get into a Commander to, in short order, be flying something that has more in common with those that are on display in the Vintage area at OSH. Harsh though my words may be the fact still remains Commanders are fading into being a rare piece of aviation history.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Are there any Commander owners at Oshkosh? I have been looking at them online and researching - have been interested in a 114. Was hoping to see some planes and talk to owners here. Haven't seen any Commanders let alone a mention that such a plane exists -- been here since Sunday...
Thanks and Best
