Thought I would start this to track who is going to OSH this year and when. My son Conor and I will probably arrive Thursday morning and depart Sunday morning. We often have a Friday Night get together.

Tried to correct the misspellings but it would not let me!

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Last year Todd Hardin and our wives thought we'd be clever and get there first thing Monday morning. Todd and I had studied the arrival NOTAM front and back and knew it in our sleep to include even quizzing ourselves over it at dinner.
Sunday night, we even pre-located ourselves close just north of Chicago (Waukegan, not easy for a southern boy to pronounce on the radio) for an early start Monday.

You should have heard Todd when I called him with the ATIS arrival instructing us to divert to Fond du Lac.:eek: NO WAY, on a MONDAY??? guess earlier heavy rains had saturated the parking areas and they were unable to accommodate us.

Fond du Lac worked out just fine, as we got to meet and kidnap fellow COG member Rolf Ringgold.:)

Anyway, when you review the 2017 NOTAM recommend you give the 'alternate' fields page a glance --- just incase . . .;)

have fun,
John

Re: Oshkosh 2017

The place gets mobbed with Saturday and Sunday arrivals. Usually, Monday and Tuesday are really bad if you want to camp. The early arrivals start to leave Wednesday and we have always gotten good parking on Thursday morning.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Well, I expected to be at OSH this year, as usual. But my future granddaughter decided to schedule her arrival that week... This will be my son Jake's 2nd child, but first daughter. Though I love to sit beside the runway, watching and listening to the OSH arrivals on Sat/Sun, I think THIS arrival trumps that one...

So we'll be back next year!

Re: Oshkosh 2017

I guess I cannot vote. I have been going to Oshkosh for 28 years and always there for the first arrivals. For about 15 years, we stayed for the full show. Now we meet the early Commander group and stay while the booth and seminar people are fresh. The early week group is mainly pilots and the crowd comes latter to see the air shows.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

I liked to come early and spend the week. Camp close to the shower units and get a spot near the flightline. However given the Pestacide spray they used in 2014, with over 300 people at the Med tents having (like Camellia did) SERIOUS Allergic reactions-Eyes and Lips swelling, difficulty breathing, she will never go again.
Even on the dorms, they sprayed the grass on campus and the rooms for insects.
Wisconsin seems to be way behind the organic learning curve.

I think the problem was exacerbated by opening the tent window covers, and with the strong winds early in the week Pestacide dust got onto the sleeping bags & everywhere else.

Since I don't usually have the same level of reaction, and now know the issue, I'd be game to still be a 31yr young Commander camper.
As for the Fri nite Sedam Grill event, Scott, try not to over precook the Meats this go-around!

Bottom line, if I can get some personal & house maintenance projects completed, I'd like to see what Osh 17 deal enticements are offerred.
I assume Sid will be giving his usual WW2 Aeronautical Engjneering Tech seminars.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Definitely go to Scott's Friday night gathering Conor is interesting to talk to and with Scott cooking we fortunately are spared the ordeal of talking to him!

Re: Oshkosh 2017

I go one way or another. I also had to go to Fond Du Lac last year Monday morning. It worked out fine, but usual 0720 on a weekday is a great time to slip in on the arrival.

My backup plan is always to drive.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Not sure of the schedule, but there are a couple of night shows (Wed & Sat if I recall). For that day, my wife secured VIP seating for us in one of the many VIP tents/setups along the strip. Air-conditioned with a lunch buffet and soft drinks/water throughout the day. (I was just happy for a place to set down for a min or two). Todd using his southern charm was able to sweet talk the front desk into two tickets on the spot.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the V I P seating consideration. (not sure I'd do it again, but the wife unit was sold from the get-go).

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Murph ... you should still vote, fly or drive!

Wednesday and Thursday are huge turnover days so there seem to be always camping spaces. The air traffic is not higher inbound on W,T, F but the drive-in traffic is definitely higher on Friday and Saturday.

But from what I have heard, if you are flying in early, you are better coming in Saturday or Sunday morning. Can some of the usual early arrivers who fly in tell us about that?

There are no airshows Sunday and no display booths open. The Fly-Mart is though. A lot of cheap crap ... but here and there some good finds.

The night airshow, either Wed., or the last Sat. is a must. Something you just cannot see anywhere else on the planet.

And Sid and Sherman .... I have NO idea what this burnt-meat thing is about. Sid does not eat meat anyway, and I am a damn fine cook, thank you very much. It is not my fault Sid that your curried lentil and quinoa burgers fell through the grill! Those things should be only eaten with a spoon by old men without teeth! And Sherman ... matzo-balls on the grill? PLEASE! I knew that would never work. I can just see it next year ... Curried lentil and quinoa matzo balls. YIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKES! (Ingrateful slugs, you two are.)

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Hey Scott, as far as Lentils, Sid will agree no one makes a finer flavorful lentil Soup than Camellia, especially when she adds Turkey strands for me.

I guess my years in Oklahoma spoiled me for Great Steaks and Chicken Done Right on the Grill, with my special NY, Okla, TX seasonings mix. Maybe I can help you out!
Never thought about Matzo Ball Soup on the Propane/Stern stoves at Oshkosh. Usually stick with Chef Board emergency Ravioli, which is what I had to do after your 'Grill' in '14. After you blinded us with your flashing 5 light strobe system, I was lucky to even find my row 510 way down the flightline.

Nonetheless, it was a great gathering ofleftover Commander Characters & other Aviaton friends. NOW Don't go UN- Security Council oppositional on Sid & me!

Now if the Texans show up, we can assign the Grill to them! A BBQ Brisket would be great under the Oshkosh $tars. We can always get Sid carryout McDonald's Fries if fresh cut fall thru your grill.

Planning on it. Weather-permitting I'll likely arrive Saturday or early Sunday and stay most of the week.

Last year arrival on Sunday AM was a mess due to bad weather on Saturday and Sunday morning so lots of folks tried to arrive as soon as ceilings & visibility allowed. Between heavier than usual traffic, even for Oshkosh, and a temporary runway closure it made for a bad situation. Would rather arrive a day early to avoid a repeat.

Re: Oshkosh 2017

I am planning to be there either on Wed or Thurs depending on the weather. Using airline miles to fly to MKE..arriving Monday and leaving Friday..Hope to fly in next year

Yeah I thought John was pulling a joke on me when he told me at 8:00 am Monday morning (first official opening day of Osh) that they had closed and we were going to have to divert to Fond Du Lac, man I was in fast panic flipping of the procedures pages mode for fond Du lac, Autopilot was flying the plane and I was studying up on the Fond Du Lac arrivals, all worked out but then we had to pay an outrageous one way Bus Fee to go back to osh to pick our rental car up that was at Osh awaiting our arrival, once again I had scheduled the pick-up for the rental car at Osh because I would have bet the farm we would have had no problems at all getting into Osh on an early Monday morning arrival, boy were we surprised.

Anyway John are we going to go again this year???? I'm all in if you guys want to go but we need to start planning so we can book a house, car etc....and maybe this year we'll go up on Saturday or Sunday before or either wait until Wednesday or Thursday and go up, I'm game for going up the Saturday/Sunday before the event official starts and stay for a few days then head up towards Port Huron for a few days etc. But at the same time we don't need to miss Scott's big Commander cook-out shindig, that would be a FUN event to be a part of....we need to discuss this before to much longer.

July looks open and the rental house and car sounds very inviting. I'd suggest hitting it at mid-week this year and see how it goes. Can go either way on the Sat night show, sorry Pat;:( having seen both Osh and SnF, I'll pick SnF's night demo every time.

We've already got a Canadian and by then another MI T-shirt so this time I'd like to 'explore' Minn and maybe hit N D's extreme east border.;)

(Think Rolf and Ann, Mike and Twila or Phillip and Liz/girls would be interested??)

Re: Oshkosh 2017

I think this sounds good, we'll have to finalize the dates later on...

Re: Oshkosh 2017

That first choice was supposed to be "more toward the beginning of the week" if one Judi or the webmaster could fix that? Would make a lot more sense!

Re: Oshkosh 2017

Need to keep 'Most or all of the week' too, That's my plan!
