Got to take a great cross country this past weekend, from home base in Albuquerque to New Jersey & back. It was an incredible adventure & I was blessed with superb weather (nearly) all the way. The purpose was to pick up six antique wooden chairs my wife found on eBay, to match an antique oak dining table we picked up last Fall. After 20+ years of the same set, it was time for an upgrade. And any excuse to go flying!!!

Left KAEG at sunrise Friday morning - clear skies, cool and smooth. Fuel stop was in Marshall, MO at 5 hours, then on to Indiana, PA - another five hours with some weaving in and out of clouds at 11.5. Got a very sombering view of the massive flooding in the Midwest. The FBO at KIDI was great. Rick set me up with an overnight courtesy car and knew the best Italian restaurant in town. He met me early to fuel up on Saturday & then on to Sussex, NJ, about 1.5 hours eastbound into nearly IFR haze in the early morning sun. I'd almost forgotten how hazy it can be on the East Coast. (Reminded me of my student days in Norfolk, VA where 10 miles was an incredible visibility day!) Sussex is the closest airport to the seller, who is in Milford, PA. He met me at the airport, but was about 1/2 hour late. That was ok, as it gave me time to watch the nearly non-stop flow of parachute jumpers coming down at the field. It was an interesting approach, as a hill was just about smack in the middle of base. Going around the hill on base you almost lose sight of the airport but can see into the large windows of the house on top of the hill! After loading up and fueling up, headed to Bedford, IN for a fuel stop - this is where things got interesting. Beford has no taxiways; two runways that form an X. I landed & was taxing back, always calling out on Unicom. As I was about 100 yards from the intersection a Vans came screaming down the other runway - he had never made a call. Unfortunately for him he groundlooped, so I decided it wasn't worth discussing the "right" way to communicate. Headed to Springfield, MO for overnight; up to 12k to get above the haze with sun in my eyes. It was very scenic up there, and having weather on Foreflight let me be more alert of the huge storm system heading towards my path that I could clearly see. No hangar space overnight, but fortunately for 94J the storm never hit the airport. Sunday headed home early with a sunrise departure & fuel stop in Ponca City. On the way home ending up with a beautiful VFR on top at 12.5k with the clouds ending right at the Sandia Mountains by home. Total of 26 hours.

Oh yes, the six chairs were packed into the back (with lots of bubble wrap) without taking the rear seat out, just folded down.... Don't know of any other plane that they could have fit in. Yes, the picture is of the chairs.... Forgot to get a good pic with them in 94J. And yes, my wife is happy....too!

Unreal! What a flight. I simply can't believe you got all those chairs in there. That is such a great story and awesome trip!

Sounds like a fun couple of days Charlie. Thanks for sharing

Tyler, before we even made an offer to purchase, I verified they could fit. The chair measurements were in the listing & our existing chairs were pretty close - just slightly larger. I spent several hours measuring, checking fit through baggage door, etc. first. Last chair had to go in through pilot door - which was no problem to open wide as 94J has the gas door springs. They disconnect simply & I hold the door wide open with a bungee cord! I was very impressed with the interior room I was able to utilize. The chairs fit lengthwise side to side, one on top of another. Three rows front to back. W&B no issue. Pretty fast moving van for sure!

Were you IFR? Looks like you were on top! Sounds great my Nephew is in Albuquerque and met Megan at the Tanque Verde ranch out there!

Charles, on the way home twice I changed my VFR flight plan to IFR. First was when I was at 10.5 heading west & though technically in VMC had essentially no forward visibility as I was in thick haze heading into the sun. Changed to IFR & went up to 12k for a better view - that's the pic of haze on top. Was in VMC all the way to Springfield - great watching the growing storm about 50 miles away! Second time I was at 12.5 VFR over northern NM & ended up on top of a layer that stretched to just before home base. That's the VFR on top pic. The layer was at about 11k, but a pretty big wall of rising cloud appeared in my path, so I in-flight filed IFR just in case & went to 12k. Turned out I was always in VMC, but at the time was legal to enter clouds that sure looked like I'd have to fly through.

Never been the the Tanque Verde Ranch. If you make it out this way be sure to let me know!

I definitely will! I may consider heading that way after the fly-in. I could look but how long of a trip will that be for you?

Charles, per my Foreflight setup it's about 3.75 hours between KAEG and T82. The route I've planned is KAEG BEANN CNX CME T82.

That's sounds like a great flight.

I have never used Foreflight on a long trip like that. How was it? do you have a full iPad or the mini? did you have problems with overheating?

Sorry, I don't meant to turn this into a Foreflight thread. Just curios.

Marcos, I flew just north of you on Friday! No worries about the possibility of changing the thread. I really like Foreflight; this was the longest trip I've taken thus far in 94J & also using Foreflight. It is so incredibly helpful, both for planning and while flying (especially useful with Stratus for real time weather & traffic). It was an essential tool for me when I decided to alter my way home due to weather in Ohio, for example, and plan a different path. It also makes filing, activating and closing a flight plan a breeze. I have a mini & use a RAM mount. It has overheated in the past, but did not on this trip

Great Commander Trip Charlie! All your diligence with N1094J over the past year rewarded you -both Commander dependability & ' atmospherically /scenic beautifully'!

You know that Joe Tagliarini is based at Sussex. If you plan another trip E for more Antiques, you could time it & make next years 44N gathering.Earn the furthest distance Participant.

Just curious if you flew over the Sandia Tramway & then descended or did you take the old Rt66/I-40 Pass from the East into ABQ airspace before your chairs touched down at AEG.

Spent quite some time in the Albuquerque area 1970-72. Worked with an Antioch College Educational project with Navajo Nation. Window Rock & up in the 4 corners area 71-72. Visited Albuquerque monthly. Remember flying out of Coronado Airfield adjacent I-25 couple of times. Glad AEG still functional. Magnificent geography to have as home base!

Sherman, I did not realize that Joe was based at Sussex. I'd have been certain to touch base with him had I realized that. Coming home the area east of the Sandias was covered in cloud, so went to CYOTE intersection, which is south of the I-40 pass & then over the Sandias (which I could not see from the east side). When coming from and going to the east I usually use the I-40 pass. Don't like to go over the tram, that's at the top of the crest & higher than I need to go to cross the Sandias. KAEG has certainly changed. I remember flying there in the 80's when no buildings were there. I also remember Coronado; took my CFI written there! It is now an unused vacant tract of Indian land. I also have mixed memories of Cottonwood - where Cottonwood Mall and apartments are now. Two guys I knew from the FBO in Norfolk where I learned to fly died there, just a few months before I moved here in 1982. I always liked that little airport.

If timing had been a bit different I'd had earned that 44N furthest distance award..... Have to think about that next time around! Thanks for the invite & the comments.

Hi Charlie: Wish I knew you were coming to Sussex we could have joined up. At least you were entertained by the non stop jumping. What did you think of the approach by that Super Carivan ! Up to 14.5k and down in 8 minutes. Decends at 6,000 f.p.m. It's an interesting ride I can tell you. Well sounds like you had a great trip and if you do it again, be sure to let me know.

Joe, yes it would have been very great to have met you. The Super Caravan was very impressive, but then so were the jumpers who came down screaming fast! If I make it back that way, you can count on me getting in touch ahead of time.

Charlie, I hope my wife doesn’t read this thread, because she will expect me to pick up and deliver on Sundays like you and Amazon! But hey, what a great use of your Commander!

That's a nice panel you got. I want to put a 530W with a MX20 on 1102J when I have the time. Sorry, I meant $$$.

I just brought 1102J back from Northern California to Missouri. I landed yesterday at Creve Coeur. It's all flooded over there. The first time I used Foreflight on a long trip and I really like it. Game changer.

Marcos, glad you were able to bring 02J home; and put Foreflight to use on the trip. I truly enjoy using Foreflight; one thing is the "where am I" on the VFR chart - I was able to keep track of what town, river, etc. I was flying over. Made the trip even more enjoyable & so much better than several paper VFR sectionals!

Thanks for posting the pics of your trip home. Where were they taken?
