OH Bound

I am planning a first time flight to OH, meeting a good friend who lives in Akron. Any overly positive or negative experiences or recommendations for CAK vs AKR? I would need minimal service, mainly fuel but thought I'd ask.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: OH Bound

It's been awhile, but stopped for fuel in 2006 at CAK on the way to East coast and on the return trip. Nice airport and people then.

Re: OH Bound

If you have never been to the Air Force museum in Dayton and have some time, it is well worth the trip! It is free to get into...sign up as soon as you get there for the Presidential tour. They only allow so many per day. The planes are in a different hanger...the 707 that flew Kennedy to Dallas and back is there (along with 16 other Presidential planes) and you can go in it.

Re: OH Bound

IMHO I think the Air Force museum in Dayton is even better than the Smithsonian. Well worth the visit!

Re: OH Bound

CAK has a decent military bunker themed restaurant. 246th Bomber Group or something like that. Decent food and some great artifacts throughout.

Re: OH Bound

The Presidential tour brings you to the Active side of Wright-Patterson, in that hanger is the one surviving XB-70, the first prototype. It's one of the most Awesome aircraft ever built, and at the time, worth it's weight in Gold. They've got a couple of books in the Bookstore that describe the Test flights, the Aircraft capability, and the tragic accident that destroyed the second prototype. It's got to be one of the top five aircraft museums in the world. Last time I was there my friend and I spend three days, and barely saw everything.

Re: OH Bound

All great tips guys - you may have talked me into the airplane tour during my time there. Like I need a reason to spend more time with airplanes, ha! Thanks.

Re: OH Bound

I agree. Dayton would be a good side trip. I have been to CAK several times and I think you would like it better than Akron.

Re: OH Bound

I cannot recall if it is AKR or CAK, but one of them has the big hangers where they built Cosairs. I think Goodyear actually contracted to build them. There are tons of cool pictures, like a pictorial museum.

At Dayton, if you like the historical stuff, they have 5 sites that make up the aviation heritage park:

The Bicycle shop, house, et al, are cool to see. I grew up about an hour from there and in about 5th grade my Dad took me over to Huffman Prairie where the Wright Bros. did much of the perfection of the airplane and then we watched B52's landing and departing from Wright-Patterson. my Dad had a buddy still active there and he had told him about some "exercise" whereby there would be a lot of them coming and going. We just sat outside the fence with a few hundred other folks and watched. Made a huge impression on me.
