New to the site and Commanders

Hi all,

About to start my PPL and very excited as the school I'm going to uses a Commander 112 for the Navigation phase!

Cheers

Mark

Welcome Mark!

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Welcome, and enjoy! Where are you learning - a 112 is a much nicer aircraft than most schools use!

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Can't believe they would use a complex aircraft in ANY part of a PPL. Doesn't make much sense to me. BTW, I am training in a C-150 and the plane tied down next to me is a 112. Always make it a point to walk over and check it out. Good luck with your training! I take my checkride on the 17th.

Walter ..

Good luck on your flight test.

Welcome! Lucky your school ha a 112! Wish I was that lucky.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Mark, welcome to the forum & best of luck on your training. My "navigation phase" was done in a Cessna 150! I have no doubt you will thoroughly enjoy flying the 112 at your flight school.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Welcome and good luck! I'm training for my PPL now in my own 114 (N114MB). I did train a few years ago in a C172 but never finished. This time I thought I'd buy my own and learn to fly in the plane I would be flying! Definitely more challenging in a complex, high performance aircraft but well worth it!

Welcome to the group! The comfort of the Commander has no equal among SEL pistons, you will love it!

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Welcome, Mark. Where are you from and what is your home airport? Be sure to put that in your signature. That will get you offers of support from experienced Commander pilots in your area. For example, landing Commanders in a cross-wind is sometimes tricky for new pilots and unless the CFI is experienced, many of them have trouble, too. It is not hard, just different and those transitioning from Pipers and Cessnas sometimes struggle for a bit. I have helped several new Commander owners through this and I know others here have as well.

John, do you mind if I ask what you pay in insurance?? I am near the end of my student license and hopefully will have my PPL by February. My plan is to get into my own 114 and continue to build hours, then continue on with my IFR rating.

I pay just over $6,000 for insurance while I get my PPL in my 112A $90k hull value.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

WOW.....is that typical insurance rates?? Or is it high because your a student with a complex airplane??

Student in a complex airplane. Estimate is to drop in half after the first year if I get 50 hours in.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Insurance carriers are concerned you'll forget to put the wheels up and down... pretty std. to pay more that 1st yr. til you get the rating and build time in M&M.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

I paid 2200/year the 1st year of ownership in a complex plane/Commander with just the min of complex time.

Second year was a little under 1800 and after I got past 200 hours in general.

I would question paying 3k after you are certified and have a little time i.e. ~25 hours of complex time.

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Your insurance rates will/should continue to decline as you add ratings.
An instrument rating should be your first priority and should help those rates decrease (
probably the most).

Re: New to the site and Commanders

Just so you know, a lot of us with hours and hull values under $100k are down to $1100 - $1500. Remember that besides the obvious differences in hull value and hours, there could be major differences in deductibles, liability and medical coverage impacting the rates everyone mentions here.

If you search "Insurance rates" in the ribbon above, you should fine a gig thread with maybe a couple of hundred responses that we did a couple of years ago trying to sort our who was paying what for insurance at what coverage. It was helpful but we have not gone back to that in a significant way.

I’m learning at the Australian Aerobatic Academy at Bankstown in Sydney, RPL is done in a Robin and includes a certificate in aerobatics. The PPL utilises the Commander and of course let’s you finish with constant speed and retract endorsement on your license. Cost a bit more and has more hours to complete but worth it I think 😊
