New Shimmy Dampners

Add me into that club with a Commander that wont steer on the ground and looks like loose bungee cables to me, its in the shop right now being corrected and with a few other issues in my new 114. Should be done Tuesday and back flying it and some more testing on the plane, had a real slow left main gear light 40+ seconds it took and the gear is being tested and swung to see if its the gear/hydraulics etc and doubt it thinking it a gear micro switch or the bulb.

Mike DuPont at American Aero in Taunton has been maintaining my 112 and another 114tc from Hyannis for years, give him a call if you want fair, quick and knowledgable maintenance.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Peter,
I have never questioned the quality of Jim Richards’ products. Jim is providing a good service that we as Commanders need.
But I do question the bad maintenance and paper annuals that our Commander’s get from some of the repair shops. I call them repair shops because they do not qualify to me as A&Ps. We read about bad traits, like poor steering, and it gets blamed on the design and the fix is easy.
To me, that is the value of the Commander Owner’s Group and forum. We are fortunate to be able to share these experiences and recommend good practices as well as good IAs and A&Ps and shops like Jim Richards'. We read about how slow the Commanders are and bad flying quality, another trait blamed on the Commander design. In fact, Jim did an excellent seminar on the rigging of Commanders at the Sedona Fly In. And handed out a written procedure for our mechanics.
I thank every one for their post.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Susie,

Good day to you. I have just read your posting on COG regarding the small balls reqired in a shimmy damper rebuild. Whilst I realise that it's nearly 3 years since you posted the message, do you still have any of these left for issue? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Richard Robson

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Thanks for your call earlier about the new dampers.

We do also still have our kit available for rebuilding the OEM damper: our SK-100, $25, which includes the balls and useful nylon rods for installing the rings without damage. If you want to order one of those kits, we'll throw in a supply of balls to keep you going until you can get the new damper on board.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Used Jim's rebuild kit, very easy project.
Mine was bone dry when we broke it open (no evidence of a leak) . . .

Cylon balls were probably in need of some viagra. ...or last servicer thought it was a pneumatic unit instead of hydraulic.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

I can attest to Jim Richards great kits from Areodyme as I just bought a couple of months ago two landing gear down switches for my 114, and his kit looked like $25.00 more than buying a switch online that comes with nothing, his kit had the switches and the lever, nylon spacer bushings, nuts and washers, nylon ties and even had all new molex electrical connectors and crimp pins which is a lot more than if you price compare and well worth it.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Gang,

Last year I flew into KBTV and meet Jim personally. He took the time to rebuild my shimmy dampener. It was awesome watching a master.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hi All,

Close to shipping at last. i have the final dwgs out for FAA approval which I expect to get this coming week, sufficient to deliver to the emergency cases, then I will continue to the PMA for general deliveries.

Test results have been great... 25,000 strokes without failure or leakage.
That's a lot of flights.
