Hi All,

As you know, the achille's heel of our otherwise well-designed airplanes is the nose gear. Our gear has very little caster and is easily subject to severe shaking episodes on take-off and roll-out. Just one severe episode may fracture your magnesium/aluminum torque tube.

Some of you have already faced very expensive repairs by putting up with a shimmy too long. Neither the torque tubes, nor any other major nose gear components, are available (except as very expensive unapproved parts) at this time.

There are a few things you can do to extend the service life of your nose gear:

Firstly: Have your nose gear inspected and refurbished by a Commander expert.
Secondly: Regularly check/service your shimmy dampner.
And Most Importantly: Don't continue to operate a plane that is shimmying or shaking.

Most of us who own Rockwells are nursing very old and tired dampners. From the expereince of servicing many dampners, I know that many of these units have deteriorated to a dampning drag of 5 pounds or less (after fresh servicing!) compared to 20 pounds spec for the original new units. Loss of this dampening drag causes your gear to be subject to substantial acceleration of wear (even if you are not yet noticing any shimmy) and decreased life expectancy.

I have obtained the design drawings and will undertake a design capture and production run of new dampners if enough of you are interested to justify the project at this time. Pricing would depend very much on how big a production run we make.

How many of you might be interested in a new damper?

Thanks,
Jim

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hell Jim

I for one would jump at the chance to renew my nose wheel damper and mine is on a year 2000 115, it has been refilled a couple of times since I've had it. For some reason it is worse in cold weather, I have to be very careful how hard I apply the brakes after landing, not easy on a runway with an incline. The take off run is not so bad as the nosewheel is lightened in the roll but after landing I keep the yoke well back. Put my name down Jim.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hi Jim,

I also have a 2000 115, and I have had it rebuilt once last year. Put my name down on the list too.
Thanks,
MC

I am in as well.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Jim,
I would like to be added to the list if the price is right!

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hi Jim,

Let me first say that I very much appreciate all your efforts towards preservation and enhancement of the Commander series.

In this particular case though, there may not be a need for "new" dampers. Commercial Aircraft Products (who manufactured a few different products for CAC) still supports and services all vintages of shimmy damper. If you send them a "dead" one (my old one came apart like a zipper after a maintenance error), they will send you a new rebuilt unit with all of the appropriate paperwork (8130, etc). The new unit seems to be far superior to the two earlier ones that I have seen, and is the same as was used on the 115 series.

I believe Commercial Aircraft Products, Inc. can be contacted at: (316) 942-7987; Fax (316) 9423588; comairprod@fn.net; 2311 S;. Edwards, Wichita, Kansas 67213. They were nice folks, and my current rebuild (from them) has lasted several years with no signs of seepage or loss of efficiency.

Now if we were talking about cowlings that would be an entirely different story ;)

Regards,
Neal

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Put me down Jim, will decide once you can figure a price from numbers.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Jim, I'm be interested too. Neal you didn't put down the rebuild price. So, if a new one is cheaper then a rebuilt one, I would take the least expensive route.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Jim, I'm interested!

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

I would only need it as a backup at this point, so interested depending on price...

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Jim,

I am interested too.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hi Neal,

Commercial Aircraft Products was acquired by APPH in 2007 and up until last year was willing to sell new dampners under some said "permission from CPAC". For some reason that changed last year, probably because their new parent company was concerned about avoiding any hint of an unapproved parts claim. They are no longer willing to sell any dampners or parts and have told me they have no interest in pursuing PMA or STC for our dampner. Also, Mike at the Cape has informed me that CPAC has nothing in the works for replacement dampners.

My effort is in coordination with APPH.

They have provided me with the drawings which Aerodyme would capture from print to CAD and combine with other substantiation data to create an improved FAA-approved dampner. I have given APPH a first-refusal on manufacturing them for us so long as they are price competitive.

The improvements would include a bushing at the shaft attachment end, and some weight savings.

I would PMA all the parts so that after any owner has switched over to the new approved dampner, he would be able to obtain replacement parts from Aerodyme as necessary. This heads off a problem like we now have with gear actuators where Gar-Kenyon is holding our toes to a very high price for replacement actuators (and repairs!) and is not willing to sell any replacement parts. Maybe I'll need to tackle the gear actuators next just so we can have a supply of replacement parts for those and make a few overdue design improvements there as well.

Thanks to all who have responded thus far. Price will depend VERY much on the size of the initial production run. Let's hear from more of you: do I hear 50, or maybe 100?

Jim

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Dear Jim,

Thank you for championing this effort. I am interested and please consider this my sign up.

Kindest personal regards,

Pete
