I'm Adam and I've been an owner for about 3 weeks. I've already learned so much from this forum and the excitement hasn't even begun to fade.

Some notes about me...
  • Pilot for over 20 years, Commercial SEL/MEL, CFI
  • 2200 hours (600 dual given, 400 Turbine PIC)
  • Not mechanically gifted, but learning
  • On the staff of AOPA for 11 years in their Government Affairs division
For those of you located in or near Maryland, I may be available to give flight reviews in your Commanders. Reach out if interested.

Hope to meet some of you in Dayton next month!

Welcome Adam!
Good to have a 112 flight instructor in the group!

Welcome Adam..
Sounds like you will be a great asset to the group!

Welcome Adam! We’re based in ocean city.

Welcome Adam. What do you have your Turbine time in ?

I had to go get my BFR in a Piper 100i about a week ago (no qualified CFIs available).
It felt like i was flying a 2x4 with a IO0360 in front.

Hi Adam... welcome! I once flew a TB-20 out of KGAI before I bought my 114. I'm based at KBWI. See you in Dayton!

Welcome to the group Adam.

pertaining to flight reviews I have never heard of a qualified CFI to do a flight review in a Commander. My last flight review just a few weeks ago was the most productive ever as I was really put through my paces.

I like to use a different CFI for each review. I do not let mine expire so because of that I am the PIC. On the last review the CFI had never been in a Commander before. His day job is a check airman on the 747s for UPS.

Because of his experience and wanting to get my moneys worth, I made up a written list of about a dozen questions to ask him. Such questions as vectors into Bravo without the magic words.

my next aim is to do a flight review with the CFI with 500 hours in a 112 hot shot.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken

Caravans. I think that's why I appreciate a wider cabin now.

by qualified i meant a basic CFI with at least a high performance / complex rating. Almost no available CFIs have those these days.
You cant get a legal BFR in the airplane even with you as PIC if the CFI isnt qualified to provide dual.

My BFR wasn't due till September - but none of the available CFIs on the 4 local fields around me have their HP/Complex endorsements.

So i just went down to American Flyers and flew their new Piper to knock it ..

I find this quite amazing, to get a CFI you have to have a commercial, to get a commercial you have to have complex / high performance. Or it used to be that way a few years ago. I have always wondered it the CFI had to have a double I to give me a review as I am IR.

I have never met a CFI that did not fly complex. I have never checked to see if my CFI even had a license.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Most CFIs these days progress PVT SEL --> CFI(SEL) ---> CFII (SEL) ---> Multi (Complex) / High performance

Chances are - if they don't have their Multi/commercial, they don't have complex/ hi-performance.

It was funny doing stalls in the Piper 100i. Envelope protection was on by default and and with power off, full aft elevator, the airplane would just mush with 300-400 fpm and never break. I kept pointing that out to the CFI and eventually he went "oh" and went into a menu to turn off ESP. Then it broke (allowed actual full aft travel on the elevator).

I did play with the GFC500 on the leg home - it did fine. But nothing dramatically better than the 55x i already have. So curiosity over ..

Moazzam, you are dead wrong about Multi/commercial statement on CFI's. Where did you get that information?

yes i meant to say Multi/Complex .. not multi-commercial. If thats what you're pointing out.

No - most new CFIs and CFIIs don't have these ratings. Almost all schools in the northeast - have tons of instructors and almost none w/ Complex/Hi-perf or multi.

Complex time was a commercial pilot requirement until 2018. Then FAA began to allow the use of “technically advanced airplane” time to be used instead of complex. That made flight schools and flight students happy since they saw complex singles as burdensome to find and maintain. This article explains it: https://www.aopa.org/training-and-s...que/operations/technically-advanced-airplanes

Thx Adam .. i'll catch up on latest regs RE: Complex. The HP requirement of > 200 HP is still there however- which is what i run into w/ CFIs. i.e. they can sidestep complex w/ what you posted but not Hi-performance.
