Hello everyone. Retired big iron driver here who has been instructing in C182, Corvallis TTX, Vans RV7 and RV10 and Arrows and flying a corporate LearJet. Now I want to buy an airplane that my wife and I will be comfortable in. The Commander seems to be the one and I would appreciate anyone in the Reno, NV area who would allow my wife to see just how much room is in the cockpit. Anyone close? Anyone also looking who might be interested in a partnership? Joe

Welcome to the group Joe,

Welcome Joe. Hopefully someone from your area will chime in soon.

Joe,

Welcome to the group! You have come to the right place for that travel in comfort aircraft. My bride and I love our 112A, plenty of room and the two doors makes it easy in and out. I only post this since my bride doesn't read the forums ,but she will nod off in a heart beat, even reclining her seat a bit when she is tired or we are IMC. :)

I'm sure a member in your area would be happy to let you and your bride check out a Commander.

Welcome Joe, there are few if any small Airplanes out there that will give you the Room and Visibility that a Commander will. Parts have never been a problem for anyone in this group, no matter what part you may need. I doubt in the history of Commander world Anyone has regretted his choice in Getting a commander. If you live in the Reno Area, a Turbocharged Commander (112 Hot shot, 112TC or 114TC would be a good choice for your Area. Might even consider a 114 NA or Super Commander)

Thanks all for your responses. I have been thinking of the 114TC/115TC as my first choice. The MEA's in our area can be up to 14,000 but the turbulence is present even at 18,000/20,000. It would be nice to be able to get to the Flight Levels if needed. I think the Super Commando would be good up to about 16000/18000 but it would be nice to get higher if needed. I have read that the TC also burns less fuel than the Super at the cost of a little more complexity. I would appreciate any comments from owners who fly at the higher altitudes and what model they fly, especially climbs rate from about 16000 and up. I will be flying at about 300 pounds under max gross weight most of the time leaving Reno.

Hello again - I am on a trip to SoCal and will be in Newport Beach for a couple of days. If anyone with a Commander is near John Wayne Airport KSNA or any surrounding airports I would love to come and see your airplane. I do have a car. Thanks in advance.

If that's your Mission, then the Only Plane to consider is a 114/115 TC. My 112TC solders on up from SL to 13-14k at 500 feet per minute (working with only 210 HP) and 20 plus GPH, Never been higher then that, but I would expect that climb rate up to 16-18, when the Critical altitude is reached.

Joe; don't see any 114TC/115TC owners in So Cal.
I'll ck DE Corps incase I missed someone, but there's also only 32 total left on US Registry.

Joe, there are a few facts that you need to understand, coming from heavy iron to a Commander is not that simple.

1. When that big fuel truck comes along side and fills you up with fuel, you have to go inside and pay for it or put it on your credit card,

2. When you land in a Commander and something is not working correctly, you can not just fill out a squawk sheet and expect someone else to fix it and pay for it.

3. Planning a family trip, if you are a few hundred pounds overweight you can not just kick off five passengers from the economy section and leave them stranded.

4. When you have to divert because of weather, there will not be a company bus to take you to the five star hotel to enjoy a steak and lobster meal at stockholders expense.

5. When you land and blow a tire, no-one will bring you another Commander with the same paint job and avionics as yours, you are on your own.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Joe,

I don't have a TC - but - a 114. If you guys end up near Denver, you are both welcome to try on the cabin to see how it fits. I am at KCFO next door to KDEN.

Here's a dumb idea. There's that 114B (N114JG) for sale down at Palomar (KCRQ). I'm not suggesting to buy it, but an up close and in person experience may let you see if it's a good fit.

Ken, I got a chuckle out of you post. Actually I am familiar with light GA aircraft having given 3000 hours of instruction in them. I also have an A&P license and I manage two airplanes here in Reno. I am painfully aware of the price of fuel - I am very thankful I don't have to pay for the Jet-A for the Lear!

If you can find one, a 114 Hot Shot (turbonormalized) sounds like it would also be a possibility.
