I've been wanting to visit Luray Caverns in VA for a while, and have finally put together a plan to go there next week. That will probably be my last opportunity this year, before I commit my weekends to raking leaves out of the yard. :(

You can find out more about the place by going to their web site: www.luraycaverns.com. The airport is W45 and it's only one mile from the main gate. They do provide shuttle service.

My plan was to do this as a day trip. For those that might be at a distance but still want to make the trip, there are motels on site at Luray, and lots of other things to do nearby. You could fly down there on Saturday, spend the night, then join up with the others on Sunday for the cavern tour.

My proposed itinerary is as follows:

11:30 Arrival time at W45 airport
11:30 - 12:00 Potty break and shuttle to main site
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch at on-site cafe/restaurant
1:00 - 1:15 Potty break and scheduling allowance
1:15 - 2:15 Guided tour of the caverns
2:15 - 2:30 Potty break and scheduling allowance
2:30 - 3:30 Choice: Car museum or garden maze
3:30 - 4:00 Potty break and shuttle to airport
4:00 Departure

As Radu has already pointed out to me, there are a lot of potty breaks. Also, knowing how notoriously late some of our members can be I felt we might need some cushion in the schedule. :)

Sunday, Nov 1st is also the end of Daylight Savings Time. That means you get one extra hour in the morning, but it also means sunset is earlier. Sunset that day is at 4:53pm, so we should be leaving in daylight. It turns out the full moon is the following night, so the trip home should be well lit on Sunday night too.

Please respond here, or by e-mail, if you can make the trip. I'd like to get a headcount so that I can warn the airport manager if we have a large number of airplanes arriving. There are discounts on admission for groups of 20+ people (adults and/or children).

I've been there, its worth the trip. A friend of mine & I waled and it was 3ish miles. We declined the shuttle and opted to walk cross country and it was fun but these days she and I'd get cased out by farmers. The caverns themselves are interesting and have stunning vistas of stms & stts - the cavern lighting was a bit garish when I visited 8 yrs ago.

Enjoy - hey Frank S good idea programing in so many potty breaks - it'll help keep the cavern environment clean

Years ago when I was based at FDK next to AOPA I used to fly my Commander into Luray Caverns a lot. Beautiful place, nice little airport. Worth going for those that can make it.

Frank,
08W is still in annual, otherwise I would join you.

Steve,

I had been meaning to ask you. Someone had an Avatar of themselves or someone attached by their belt to an armament mount of an F-14 or something.

Was this you?

Always thought the picture was quite fun!

I am thinking it was Bob Wilburn

Well, it looks like I won't be making the trip to Luray Caverns tomorrow. There's a TFR over NYC tomorrow afternoon. This will make my trip home very annoying, if at all possible.
