I did not notice anything about the propeller in any of the other postings. Would this mod likely use the same three bladed Hartzell propeller?

About props:

My current plan is to vibe survey the standard two-blader to keep the cost of the basic conversion as low as possible. If enough interest is expressed, we could also survey an appropriate Hartzell three-blader, maybe during the same visit to Piqua.

Sounds very interesting, and I do admire you so much for actually doing something rather than just talking about it. You are an amazingly smart person. What we need at CPAC.

My 112B with Robins hotshot is all I can see needing in the future. But things can change.

If I am on the golf course and get hit on the back of the head with a golf ball, and a "golf course" injury lawyer wins me a great settlement from the insurance company.

Things could change.

But right now for me, I am very happy with the Commander I have.

Life is a barrel of fun.

I am still stuck at two on board of the four I need to start the IO-390 project. Can any of you think of anyone I should call and brief. Anyone who is nursing the last few years out of an IO-360?

After my Turbo Charger incident, I'm curious and I could probably come up with the money.
But what are the trade offs of an IO390 over the 210HP turbo charged Lycoming (No more turbo concerns true)?

Do you have performace and fuel consumption information for a 112TC or was this not a candidate?

Will I be able to use my Three Blade Hartzell and will this reduce cost?

I would think that the 112TC's and 112TCA's would be amongst the ideal candidates for thie IO-390, since, their legacy Carb/Turbo setup has long had its share of issues and is not well supported anymore.

Hi Steve,

We won't know how well the IO-390 airplanes would compare to the TC's, TCA's and Hot Shots until we get the first IO-390 112 flying and tested, but clearly the turbos will always gain the advantage at some altitude, say 10,000.

I am checking with Hartzel to see about a "volume discount" on vibe surveys for this program to cover the OEM 2-blades and the STC 3-blade some of you are flying.

While some of this can't all be sorted before we start the project, you could consider joining in to support the engineering project and we would just have a subsequent player cash you out on that if things did not work out for your TC.

A few questions:

1. Is your prop an HC-E3YR-1RF/F7392 per Hartzell STC SA00499SE?
2. How high do you normally fly?

I would tend to agree. But the cowling will need a lot more work on the TCs as they were updraft coolers if I remember right.

Hi Neal,

You remember right.. the TC/TCA cowl inlets can double as baggage compartments when the pit is full, at least they are big enough. We would be spending a bit more time to return these cowlings to rational and might eliminate some drag as well.

My prop is the STC three blade you mention and I typically fly between 11K and 15K. Higher is better!

I am not clear from the discussion whether or not this is going to be an option for the TC and TCA airframes. Is there any plan to make this available for them?

Lycoming Gets IO-390 STC For Legacy Mooneys



Owners of older Mooneys now have a new option when it's time for an engine overhaul. Lycoming recently received the FAA OK to replace the original IO-360 Lycoming engine in Mooney M20E, M20F and M20J models with a new or remanufactured IO-390-A3A6 engine. The engine provides more horsepower as well as improved climb and cruise performance, while maintaining the same footprint as the IO-360 engine, Lycoming says. The new STC shows the company's commitment to legacy aircraft, says Dennis Racine, Lycoming director of marketing and program management. About 50 service centers across the country have been authorized to complete the installations.



The STC includes a new or rebuilt IO-390-A3A6, the Slick Start System and required documentation. In addition, Hartzell has certified both two-blade and three-blade propellers for the STC. List price of the new IO-390 is $48,500, or $36,100 for the rebuilt engine, according to AOPA. Meanwhile, Mooney is trying to entice new buyers with financing at 2.99 percent for the first four years, for those who qualify. The company is also offering a leaseback option.

What about the SMA 305. Lycoming will rebrand this engine.
No Avgas as they are about to ban it in US.

Markus all new engines are a tough sell for the price - I'm sure Lycoming has kept the future unleaded fuel need in mind for this engine development.

The SMA Jet A engine was bought by Continental and yes they will rebrand it. Its advantage lies in Jet A and its turbo for high altitude flying only that off sets its reasonably greater wt.

SinceEngines begat Airplanes and so if we want more performance we need newer or modified engines.
