Iceland Fly In

Re: Iceland Fly In

Lawrence

It now seems likely that we will try to tie our trip to Iceland (originally planned for August) to this fly-in. Also, as this is a Commander fly-in, it would be rude of me not to turn up in my G-BLTK (112TC). From my original plans, however, there will also be an Arrow, and possibly a 182 as well. Also, Merlin83b is potentially interested in bringing his 114 from Liverpool.

When are the dates going to be fixed ?

I have done the Faeroes before, and for anyone who hasn't been there, they are stunning. The approach into Vagar with its cliffs, waterfalls, and potential turbulence is not to be forgotten. Having been to Iceland three times commercially (always in the depths of winter though), it will be very interesting to see how it contrasts in the summer, and actually see airports other than Reykjavik / Kefalvik.

Blobby suits, dinghy, and PLB (ELT will go down with the plane) are essential for this route. Reykjavik oceanic airspace (Class A) stretches out to south of the Faeroes, but this is Flight-level 055 upwards so it is possible to do the trip VFR below that level.

I look forward to catching up with you at Blackbushe in the near future.

Re: Iceland Fly In

Hi Iceman (and Lawrence),
I think we were talking about the last week of July.
I have a trip to Blackbushe coming up in April and it would be great to meet up for coffee if that's possible. mob/text 07595911175. Maybe discuss tentative plans then? I can bring my suit and thermal 'romper suit' if you want to see it Lawrence.

Hi Mark,

You have a reply in the other place. However just to add, there is a do-nut of class A around Iceland as well as the Oceanic so Special VFR is needed, hence we are going to stop in Vagar and call ahead for an advance clearance rather than pressing on and finding the Vis minima for SVFR has been exceeded and have to turn back. Both Malcolm and I are IMC rated not IR so no option but VFR outside the Scottish FIR.

Blobby suits, my old one has had it. Not the best quality either. I'm flying up to Aberdeen to get fitted for a MultiFabs suit, then taking out a mortgage to pay for it.

Re: Iceland Fly In

As you may all know, a lot of Northern European airspace is shut down to IFR traffic at the moment due to the erruption of a volcano in southern Iceland. VFR GA is ok in the UK at the moment, although a number of European countries have a put a blanket ban on all flying. I am looking forward to flying over the area in late July.

Re: Iceland Fly In

Well the Icelandic CAA have put an end to my trip over there. Reading the fine print of the AIP they require all pilots on international flights to be Instrument Rated and be capable of accepting an instrument clearance. I checked with them by phone today and there are no exceptions.

With an instrument rating costing £15,000 and taking around 18 months to finish part time, I think that is out of the question. Unfortunately, getting an FAA IR is not an option as the aircraft is not on the N Register.
