How often do we fly?

Re: How often do we fly?

Mark ... who did you go with for the rebuild?

Re: How often do we fly?

I'm lucky to get 50 to 75 hr. per year. Last year was the lowest at around 40 due to airplane down for repair and then eye surgery. Hope to get back in the air this weekend and really looking forward to it. First time after eye surgery 12/17/2008.

Steve K. If your ever want someone to fly with and share the cost give me a call. That goes for anyone in and around Herndon, VA. I hope to get my plane back up to HWY, closer to where I seem to be spending most of my time.

I'm using my local shop (Waterford Aviation) for the rebuild. Their warranty is good, they do a lot of rebuilds and are certainly close enough for any needed service.

Re: How often do we fly?

I fly my bird for pleasure more that business but I do some jobs far off sometimes and have used the plane for that a lot to check on the job and such. In 07 I flew 65 hours, 08 I flew 192 hours with my tail wheel but only flew my commander 56 hours that year but I had the engine put in it so it was down a couple of months that year. This year only flew a total of 9 hours but I have had my plane in up grade mode since Christmas but I am done with the up grades for a while however I did buy a Skywatch 497 used off the Internet and will have it put in but at a later date. I am not wanting to put it in the shop for a while. I flew this morning and this afternoon to go to a meeting in TN coming home I filed for 8k but the MOA base was 8K so they cleared me to 6K for final and was truing at 175kts with a 10-13kt tail wind was showing grd speed of 185-188kts what a great day.

Re: How often do we fly?

I put in about 80-100 per year with only 20% or so being business. Lots of weekend warrior work!

Re: How often do we fly?

I manage approx a 65% Business travel to 35% personal split in the Commander and occasional fly a friend's Cardinal (to take my mother to the DC area, she's 88 and flies long Mid-West trips in the Commander but use the Cardinal's great access for the short trips) and Monney with some rarer SR-22 & Columbia 400 (pre-Cessna) tech evals for friends.

2004 - 2007 Averaged 250 - 300 hrs per year
2008 was out of flying in prime July - Sept season due to eye surgery and then horrible Dec weather - but will pick up average back this year. I generally make sure I fly at least once in a 10 days for muscle memory & procedures currency so that I'm not caught in a situation where I am rusty and depart into a low ceiling right away.

Would not do it any other way, also use SW airline for West Coast trips.

PS er fellow Commanders in the interests of keeping up our standards, please suggest whether the business or pleasure category applies for the MHC flights taken while on a biz trip?

Re: How often do we fly?

98 hours for me in 2008. Only 9 hours so far this year with the awful weather, just cancelled a planned trip to South Carolina last weekend due to bad weather.

Re: How often do we fly?

SID ... regarding your "biz or pleasure" for your Mile High Club trips ... in your case it is business because you are paying "fee for service."

Re: How often do we fly?

I only did about 60 hours last year, including a couple long trips from Montana to California. The fuel prices made me think before going joy riding.

Re: How often do we fly?

I hit the air usually most every Saturday early am for breakfast or lunch some where. There are times when Young Eagle Flights is the priority of the day so there are numerious take offs and landings and hourly flights.
Night is fun even if just keeping current.
Last couple of years fewer hours (56) due to plane projects, cowl (down for 3.5 months).
Building a house in 07.
Absent those years then around 65 to 100 per year.

Re: How often do we fly?

I fly as little as possible, but my job demands that I fly 175 to 200 hrs per year.

I am compelled to attend safety seminars every year, fly night currency trips every 90 days, and instrument approaches every six months...

I have to go to the factory every year to assist with the annual, they count this as my annual vaccation.

If I am going to fly for pleasure, it will be in first class on a Delta flight, with a drink in my hand.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: How often do we fly?

25 hours this last month.....but these were my first!! I am hoping to put in as much as possible.

Re: How often do we fly?

The most I ever flew in a single month was 78 hours and that was when I was rodeoing and at a rodeo every day some 2 rodeos a day. Life back then was a whole lot less stressful. In this thread what is the most hours flown in a single month I bet Sven has a high number. John Simmons probably has a lot too with work.

Re: How often do we fly?

I'm sure one of our commercial members has the record for most hours flown in a month but it probably wasn't in a commander...

Re: How often do we fly?

Lonnie:
Each Alaska trip logged me 85 hours in 3 weeks. (64 in 12 days)
Look Forward to you and plane depending on each other for a solid 3 weeks.

The best part is, all with good and new friends. Like big long fly-in, each night a new place.

Re: How often do we fly?

I see you are bringing your personal ATM to Alaska also, Lonnie. Hope you can depend on him for 3 weeks :) There bound to lots of RB and vodka required.

Re: How often do we fly?

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Re: How often do we fly?

Now much change is in the ashtray Lonnie? You may have to bribe customs.
On the last trip we had a pair nick named Bonnie and Clyde after Customs got a hold of them.

Some hot headed southern guy with a small record on his profile. Wife too.
:)
