They should have a public flogging for him tonight on the square and show-center. We've all made stupid mistakes and depended on the graces of controllers and other pilots, but this is over the line. Very, very dangerous.

Each year my son Conor and I encounter at least one, sometimes two, pilot breaking many or most of the rules published for the inbound procedure, but this one is beyond the pale.

Mentioned earlier in another post; last year Todd Hardin and I would quiz each other over dinner on the arrival NOTAM. Heck; I think our wives new the procedure as well as we did. :cool:

this year going in to Lakeland (S n F) I had the unlucky opportunity to follow a C-152 along the routing. You could tell he was unsure of the checkpoints and what is our natural tendency when confronted with something we're not comfortable. Yep, He decelerated to 70 Knots leaving me about to eat him. :eek:

Somehow we managed to get into the pattern . . .:)

I am sure traffic into Osh is really a concern and NOTAMs are there to prepare pilots...but I can also see how people just get confused and overwhelmed.

If it was me...and I had never been there...I would have taken someone who knows what to do the first time.

He alludes to the fact that he remembers some of what they told him, meaning at one time he might have perused the Notams briefly at some time before. So he was fully aware he didn't have the notams, was fully aware how packed it was, Didn't use good head work (could have landed anywhere else and gotten a printout of the notams) Or maybe just too lazy. Nice to hear there were no fatalities due to the carelessness of this pilot. Controllers were Fantastic. This guy needs a visit from the FAA

Still, better than the guy I witnessed last year, who proceeded to:
A) Not talk to any of the OSH ATC frequencies at any time,
B) Not listen to any of they ATC frequencies at any time,
C) Not listen to Guard at any time,
D) Not follow the NOTAM procedure,
E) Land on runway 36, directly into the path of 3 aircraft lined up for landing 18, with two more on base leg for 18, and at least 4 more on left downwing for 18.
F) When he FINALLY saw the head-on traffic touching down on all three dots on the runway, he initiated a climbing right turn, directly INTO the pattern, causing between 7-10 aircraft to take emergency evasive procedures.

It took about 15 minutes for ATC to unravel that mess. I hope to heck they got his N-number and he received a violation. That guy needed some SERIOUS remedial training.

My wife is convinced I'm NUTS for wanting to fly to OSH when I finish the Bearhawk Patrol build...

YUP ... seen all of that stuff save the guy actually coming in opposite way. Hope they pulled his license. Ridiculousness. And that slowing down thing some guys do. I have had to a couple of times just key and holler, "Keep your speed up!" even though you are not supposed to talk. One guy flying slows screws in all up big-time. I suppose it is amazing it all works as well as it does. Your wife is right, but flying in there is a singular thrill.

Yeah, but I absolutely could NOT do it in my current Champion 7ECA... That 90-knot speed in the arrival procedure is not achievable (max cruise is 86 knots, and that is really pushing the hamster well past my comfort factor), so I would have to arrive before 6:30 AM. UGH! Have to wait for the Bearhawk to be done.

Just listened to this...amazing how calm, professional and helpful the controllers are in the face of such...errrr... "environmental unawareness"

This is not confined to the big airshows, a couple of weekends ago going in to Dawson Ga for an EAA breakfast (Next to Ken's strip) we had a couple of slow kit planes cut us off on final. (Can't remember the last time I actually did a 'go-around'):rolleyes:
Sad thing was we were all talking (calling pattern position) when the little guys just shot right into a tight base to very slow final.
Moral of the story; Let's all be careful out there . . .:)

Well, the 7ECA would not qualify for the Homebuilt area, but it DOES qualify for parking down in the "Vintage" area, albeit in the "Contemporary" category. Mine would need to be WAY at the back, with a "Don't judge me!" sign... Looks great from 100 feet away, but up close... Well, there's a reason my wife calls her "Rags"... But when the Bearhawk Patrol is done, it will DEFINITELY be in the homebuilt area!

In the Patrol, with any decent headwind, the "no-wind" 250-foot ground roll on takeoff does get pretty darn short! When I took my demo flight a couple of years ago, we had about 15-knots of headwind, and we rolled maybe 100 feet before lifting off, climbing out at almost 2000 fpm. That was with 180 HP, CS prop, full fuel, and 525+ pounds of "payload" (demo pilot, me, and a bunch of "stuff" in the baggage area). It was still early in the morning when we got back, so they let us land on the numbers for 18 (right next to the exhibition area where it was parked for the show), and we were stopped well before the first set of stripes - maybe 100 feet again. Headwinds are great when your taking off and landing!

PS - I forgot to mention that they had us fly the "regular" pattern, then as we turned base asked if we'd like to "land short" for the exhibition parking. The demo pilot said "Yes, please," and dropped full flaps, entered a slip, and we came down like an autorotating Hughes 269 helicopter (almost vertical)... He touched down right on the far end of the numbers! It was pretty darn impressive, and didn't feel even remotely like pushing the limits. Incredible airplane.

In the 15 or so time I have been into OSH, the scariest was while on final for 27 when a Bonanza came for a straight in from over the lake without apparently talking to anyone, and came in directly under us. There were some shouted instructions from the controller to pull up immediately and some unanswered shouts to the Bonanza.

I would say 95% follow the NOTAM to the T. But that does leave the 5% who are brain-dead.

I do NOT recommend flying in alone. YOu need the extra set of eyes to look out for the tracks, the guys with pink flags, ground instruction, etc.

Yeah, it is nuts, but what a sight and what a thrill to fly in there. I think this will be my 12th time in the Green Angel.
