G’day

I’m Michael, located in Australia. Recently put a deposit on a 77 114 which is currently going through annual. In addition to the annual/periodic inspection I’m going to conduct a pre purchase as well. I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any pointers of any troublesome areas or key places to look in that model 114 for corrosion or other issues. I’m aware of the elevator spar AD and the list of previous AD’s for this aircraft but seeking some of this groups knowledge to help me make the best most informed purchase I can.

thanks in advance.

Mick

Welcome to the group and Commander ownership. I think you'll find this group extremely helpful if not mandatory when owning a commander.
Are you purchasing a plane that's already in Australia or are you ferrying it from somewhere else?

Mick, where are you located in OZ? I flew with two Commander owners there a few years back. Remarkable country!

I'm located in South East QLD and the prospective aircraft is in Western Australia. Looking at flying it back within the next month all things permitting.

This will give you some guidance. How deep you go is up to you and/or the AME.

My brother lives in Sydney. i told him the only way i'd visit him is if he streamlines an aircraft rental for me so i can spend < 24 hours in Sydney and the rest of the time exploring the country.

Maybe i can talk myself into a ferry pilot routine WITHIN Australia :)

Airframe.
Used the list in the link above which is good. For the first annual I had the tail, rudder etc taken off. Had a cracked spar in the elevator (left side). Replaced a lot of screws, bolts in the tail, mains and nose gear. Checked all of the seat rollers. Under the back seat multiple pictures taken for future reference. Got rid of the wet cell battery and got a Concorde. Check closely the mains attachments bolts and screw at the top. I should have replaced the gear switches on the mains as I had trouble later on.
Drained the fuel tanks and with endoscope took a lot of pictures which were reviewed and set a benchmark. Replace fuel sump with new valves. Had a cracked spar in the elevator (left side).
Engine:
It had less than 10 hours on O/H engine. Did the normal routine stuff on the engine. Cleaned out the gasolator and put new replaceable stuff in it. It was a good thing too as it needed it.
Probably did more minor stuff I cant remember right now.

Good Luck
Frank

Welcome to the group!

Look forward to pictures when you're finished up with annual. We all love pictures. ;) I'm fairly new myself, just finished up with our second annual on our 112A. Plenty of good info available from the group, and experiences to be shared.
