Hi from Middle TN

Greetings! I'm a soon to be minted PPL. I have a lifetime of family GA experience having grown up at the airport and thousands of hours in the right seat next to my father. As a family we always did owner assisted annuals and I'm a decent mechanic because of it. Life the past 20 years has kept me from pursuing my PPL (too busy at times, other priorities other times). I work in the live entertainment business and forced down-time this year has allowed me to go finally go after it. With my extensive prior experience, it has been very intuitive for me to get through.

I have a lot of memories of seeing 112's on the ramp over the years and have always admired them. I am considering purchasing one in the next year or so and have done a lot of reading on them. I feel like this aircraft would suit my mission well, look good doing it and be a lot more comfortable than a Mooney. I'm glad to be on this group and will search and read before asking a lot of questions. I'm sure most have been answered over the years.

Are there any members here in the Middle Tennessee area. I'd love to sit in a 112 and maybe go for a ride sometime? Cheers!

Welcome Brad,
You’ll find the members can be very helpful with your questions on this board. I would highly recommend talking to Judy Anderson at Suncoast aviation when you’re ready to start shopping. She knows the history of pretty much every Commander out there. I have a 114, but I’m in western Kentucky, close to your neighborhood of the country.

Good luck with everything & welcome.

Hi Brad,
I am a 112 owner and most of the time fly single or with one passenger. Must know you flight profiles to figure out if a 112 will do the job.

Thanks Ken. Most of the time it will be me, my wife and our daughter flying around the southeast and over to the east coast. No heavy duty mountains. I suppose there will be some compromise on useful load balancing out how much stuff the ladies bring vs how much fuel we can carry! Does the performance of the normally aspirated 112s suffer real bad when they are loaded close to max gross on a hot summer day?

Brad,
Are expecting your daughter to get smaller with time? depending on the age most grow a lot if you feed them. I am turbo normalized and have flown a lot at gross weight, you do not need to fill the tanks all the way. The main thing is to buy your last plane rather than your first, I would do some sample W&B and think about the future.
Life is a barrel of fun.

Brad - What Ken said - worked for me.

My situation is different - I am in Denver - so my elevation robs performance of a normally aspirated plane. I have to plan around those limitations and it hasn't hindered my flying. Just break down where you want to fly and what your typical load out might be - then look at useful loads and CGs - that will help you find the answers.

Good luck and welcome!

Dean

Brad,

Good luck on finishing up the PPL!

Welcome to the group! As others already mentioned figure out your mission and then work some weight and balance numbers to see what will work for you.
