Hello Commander Owners Group

Hello Commander Owner Group,

I do not own a Commander, but I have always been intrigued by the design. They are beautiful to look at, roomy, robust, and have a well designed interior and panel, they are just a very complete package with a lot of attention placed on design details. They stand out from the rest of the GA world in this way. But I digress... I am here to introduce you to the company I work for and their certified EFIS products. Please see my post in the And now, a word from our sponsors... section for more detail.

So a little about me...

I grew up in an aviation family- my father, Fred Ludtke, campaigned two different Monocoupes, a 90AW, and a 110 Special on the airshow circuit for thirty years, flying his airshow aerobatic routine “4 1/2 Gs in 4 1/2 Minutes”. Growing up, I helped restore, maintain, and eventually fly these historic airplanes.

I hold FAA Commercial Pilot and Airframe & Powerplant Certifications. I have thirty years of professional experience in aviation and aerospace design, maintenance, fabrication, and restoration. My aviation career spans line-maintenance of Beech 18, C-46, and DC-3 freight dogs, to the restoration of antique airplanes, to writing flight manual and maintenance manual procedures, to the design of flight deck human/system interfaces for a major commercial aircraft manufacturer.

Currently I am the Marketing Product Analyst for Dynon Avionics. I am responsible for applying my aviation expertise to influence the company's new product introduction strategies. My previous roles with Dynon include Certification Engineer, and Technical Support Specialist.

My hobbies include keeping my wife happy, raising four children (now all attending or have graduated college), and recently, building my next airplane- a Vans RV-6. My previous airplane was a Pitts Special S-1E, which I used for regional aerobatic competition... 20 years ago. I am looking forward to flying again!

You can find me at https://www.facebook.com/rick.ludtke.

Cheers,

Rick

Hi Rick and welcome to COG. We need a certified autopilot for Commanders. Nobody makes a modern one. So what does it take to get Dynon to certify one for our AC11 aircraft? I mean like how many commitments? The first manufacturer to come out will probably become the norm for upgrades for the remainder of the fleet.

Hi Rick,
Thank you for your summary note, including the aerobatic piece of your C.V.!
I do have several Dynon products and I will be sure to contact you when I pursue the next ones. Your company provides the market very good value products from my frame of reference.
Best regards,
Pete

Rick,

Welcome - thanks for the intro and interest in Commander! I completed your survey and am starting my search for a solution. I look forward to seeing and learning more about Dynon.

Hey Rick...I just completed the survey

Thank you all for your warm reception. I have long been a fan of the Commanders, and during my stint as the Certification Engineer (I recently moved to Marketing), I made it a point to add the Commander models to the STC Airplane Model List when I applied for approval to expand the AML. Your airplanes have such a modern appearance, they really deserve glass flight decks! I wish we could deliver an autopilot overnight for you. But all good things take time, or at least that's what the FAA keeps telling me.

I gathered the following FAA registration data for N-registered Commanders:

Can anyone in the group validate this? These numbers seem low to me. I fear that I may not have found all of the FAA's MFR/MDL Codes assigned to the Commander models. If true, then I am not counting all of the airplanes.

Please be sure, if you are at all interested in considering a SkyView retrofit, to fill out the survey. We have learned that large numbers of airplanes produced and registered do not automatically translate to large amounts of product sold. So a smaller group of airplanes that has strong demand could be still be an attractive market. I am not making any promises, but I would personally love to see Dynon certify the autopilot in the Commander.

My move to Marketing was intended to help the small Marketing team establish a longer horizon to look further into the future. And so I am trying to develop data to aid in making our airplane decisions. So vote early and vote often! ;o)

Do understand, that to get the SkyView autopilot, you must have the SkyView system installed. This means a new instrument panel. We don't have a stand-alone autopilot. But for the price of the competitions stand-alone autopilot, you would benefit from of all of the additional functions and features beyond just the autopilot. The big hitters are Moving map navigation with optional charts, Engine Monitoring, Traffic and Weather, Synthetic Vision, Flight path indicator, and a fully integrated autopilot system (once certified), to name just a few.

I should also mention that Dynon does not charge for software updates or digital database updates. All of our software and installation, maintenance, and operational documentation is freely available on our Dynon Certified website (https://www.dynoncertified.com/index.php). And, owners can even nominate their own installer, and purchase directly from Dynon if they choose too. That means anyone with the appropriate certificates can do the installation and approve the airplanes return to service. It is details like these that we at Dynon believe make the SkyView HDX system STC a better value for airplane owners than the competition.

Cheers,
Rick

Those numbers are correct.

Rick, you can probably see that there are a couple of certification foot races underway right now. What would you need for this to become a viable project ? I see one of our friends here has already installed your suite including the AP (INOPd) so we have one flying.... We have a bit of a mixed bag right now with Aspen/EDM 'stuff' and at some point may consider a full panel refresh so Dynon is an interesting a viable option and interesting.

Rick,

You might want to add in the rest of the fleet on other countries registries, like Canada, UK, France, Germany, etc.
