Hello fellow Commander Owners,

Pleased to join this informative community. Getting to know this aircraft has been interesting, having come from a Cessna Owner background (R172K, P210N).

Completed a nice panel upgrade recently.. Finding power settings a bit challenging, with some hesitancy in advancing power through 1400 to 1800 RPM. Had a carb rebuild as a result of a post purchase annual where it was determined carb had some pitting and corrosion making it U/S. Took a lot of effort and luck to find a replacement despite herculean efforts. Discovering now that the TO 360 is quite the particular engine in terms of sensitivity to a number of factors like elevation and temperature (not fond of cold Canada). Hard to get the Carb Temp up but the suggestion of the oil cooler plug found on the site here helped.

So, any thoughts on the power issue? If I play with the mixture, ie lean it to the "M" engine smoothes out somewhat. This occurs at run up and then powering up for the takeoff roll, via holding at 30 inches for spool up. Even then, I seem to still need it leaned out a bit to get the engine to smooth out.

Looking forward to hearing any thoughts and thanks again for all the help so far.

Nathan

Hello Nathan - I too, came from the other "C" world. My first few flights in my TC were quite a transition. When advancing power, you reach a point where the turbo boost starts working. On a hot day mine will even stumble if the mixture isn't back somewhat. The higher the OAT, the more pronounced the hesitation. It doesn't reward a "throttle jockey"!

Are you holding the brakes till you get 40"? I take it to 36 or so and release brakes, as it starts to roll, it bootstraps to 40" and only Ihen do I push mixture up. It sounds complicated but you develop a feel for it.

While I'm not sitting in your airplane, I think your getting too much fuel up there before the turbo spools up. I too, thought my carb was messed up till I learned how to manage it.

We have a passionate group of TC owners here. We've all been there so don't be afraid to ask! k

Thanks for the reply!

I don't hold until 40". I hold at 30", wait about 5 secs until I feel the turbo engage, then off brakes, roll while increasing to 36" then further to 41". I do keep a bit lean until past 36". So I think we are managing the same way perhaps. Just not used to the usual "full rich" on T/O or hearing any sort of hesitation at all from the engine that is managed by the mixture control...first thought is that the carb has a float issue, or seal leak - as per a post on saw on here before. Passengers ask me - hey is the engine ok? Lol.

Welcome Nathan. Your panel looks awesome.

Nathan,

Welcome to the Commanders Owners Group! You checked all the boxes, adding pictures in the first post. ;) Beautiful plane and panel.

Hi Nathan. Nice bird you have there! I am south of you in Kamloops. If you ever fly through here shoot me a message. I have yet to see another Commander on the field here.

Dawson Creek! I have not been there but I know the history of the Canadian NW pretty well. Have done a lot of work in AB and some in BC. Beautiful place. One of my "bucket List" items is the fly "the trench" from Montana to NWT then into Alaska. YOu can probably give me advice. Anyone else want to go?
