Hi All.

I left Orlando Florida at 4.30 this afternoon on a trip back home to Albany, Georgia.

I was expecting headwinds from the forcasts, but never what I experienced today.

I stayed low and only went to 6500 ft. The best ground speed I saw was 85 knots.

I tried higher and got into the 70s, back to 6500 and battled on. Listening to center about

X city they were talking about 100 knot head winds at altitude, do no know what altitude.

I was tempted, but had two passingers. Have always wanted to fly a Commander backwards.

On the way down there Sunday I flew the whole way at 164 knots GS so I guess today was payback day.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: Headwinds

Ken would you have minimized H wind by going lower - say 2500 since its all flat land?

Re: Headwinds

Sounds a bit like the 50+ knot headwinds we had on the way out to Boyne last September. Nothing you can do sometimes. At least you got some benefit on your way out.

Many here are in the 'Continuous Headwind' club.

Re: Headwinds

Gee! My Commander has the Built in headwind option installed from the factory.I've got use to it. But at least I'm comfortable.

Ken

How was the ride. Last Saturday at 2500 the ride fron St. Marys (4j6) to Jekyll Island (09J) was really rough. Glad it was a short flight.

Re: Headwinds

Ken,

The ride was Ok, would have gone lower except for the TV tower West of Greenville and others on the way. They would slow me down more than the headwind.

Re: Headwinds

How is your recovery coming along Ken? Great that you're flying again. Feeling somewhat better?

Re: Headwinds

Ken,

Took a trip to Ft Lauderdale a couple of weeks ago. 200 knots going. 10 day camel ride coming home. Going low earned me 10 knots more ground speed but with heavy turbulance it was hardly worth it. Had to strap in tight to stop from banging my head off the roof.

Just saw Scott's 17 destination thread. Good luck with that. I just DROVE to Houston and back 'cos I thought better about flying in this weather and Airlines were booked solid so I couldn't get a seat.

Time to stay home for a couple of weeks.

Re: Headwinds

Hey you headwind whiners - yes the nature of flying is such that over 50% probability that flights will have headwinds - because even 90* cross track winds are head winds because of heading correction into the wind to stay on the desired track - so quit whinning and try to minimize by selecting best altitudes not just we always fly at 6500.

PS OK I shouldn't demand altitude selection variety - I pretty much always select 5500 VFR or 11000 IMC for obvious reasons.

Sid I understood the first mile, but what was the second mile for in the clouds???

Re: Headwinds

Dave I always try to fly right and not violate the rules so:
If its IMC I'd have to file for 4000 or 6000 and neither would be legal for the mile high. So instead I file for 11,000 stay legal for the 2 mile high!

Question for the experts - if I filed for 6000 - then I should be legal for the nmile high, right??

Re: Headwinds

Sid it doesn't count if your by yourself!

Re: Headwinds

Bill.

I am back and flying full time. I have a lot of hours to catch up on or it will thow my budget out of wack.
Flew an hour today just to check out the plane again. Going nowhere but did all the monthly checks.

Life is a barrel of fun

Depends... wanna be mile high MSL or AGL?

Wow that's an issue I ignored AGL or MSL! Please any FAR police on the board please clarify if mile high requirements are for AGL or MSL and secondly if 6000 ft counts since its nautical mile high?

PS OK Lonnie & Dave I am bested - Lonnie's was a funny put down!

Re: Headwinds

Just picking at you Sid no harm ment. LOL

Re: Headwinds

Lonnie when a fellow Commanderer leaves himself or herself so wide open it wouldn't be right not to take the shot so no need to explain I was fair game
