Saturday is supposed to be nice ... breezy, sunny, high 64. We have not gotten together in awhile and we have a bunch of newer members in Michigan and surrounding states. How about Branch County (Coldwater, MI KOEB) just north of the IN/MI state line, dead center in the middle of the lower peninsula? They have the Prop Blast Cafe. I will suggest 9:30 AM for starters. This is a good choice because it is easy driving distance for Poor & Planeless Pat Murphy and we definitely want Betty there. Pat, too.

What say you all? WX will be turning and you all want to get your birds out! Restaurant is in the FBO building. Nice airstrip.

Pat, can you get together an email list of all the "somewhat local" guys? I know we have a bunch and I have not got in my head who is from where, but we have guys in Muskegon, Lansing and Flint off the top of my head.

I just called the Prop Blast.
They were closed for 2 weeks earlier this year but they are open now.

Reading this thread had me wondering if there are other geographical ‘Chapters’ that we may be unaware of? (Scott, Connie and I were almost going to bust the party if it weren’t for the time zone diff and your semi-early hour meeting time.)
Q1: Are there formal /semi-formal Commander Chapters/designated regions out there??
Q2: In Scott’s case of accounting for members, would a link (maybe) on the homepage linking to a specific chapter be helpful??
Not trying to complicate anything, just thinking out loud . . . We’ve got an excellent website operation in place as is . .
You awl have fun up thar . . .

Nothing official ... just people in an area who try to get together now and then. There is a pretty strong NE contingents with the hoards based on Long Island usually initiating meetings. California on occasion. Texas once in a while. If you want to get a group to meet -- I think Georgia would pull a lot of participants. Just pick a time, place. Go for it!

We have conferences set up for regions and international areas. If you subscribe to any of those you'll get an email when there are posts.

Donna and I will make it. May be a few minutes late since we have to get up so early over here in the Central time zone.

That's great, Mike. My Mechanic Ric and his intrepid assistant Melissa are coming as well. Ric has a ton of Commander experience and willing to answer any question he can you might have.

So ... whoever gets there first, I count 9 for sure, up to 3 more maybe. If anyone decides to come, post here tonight.

You guys be safe with that ‘ice’ stuff. We don’t get much of it down here. . .

It is indeed a PITA to deal with as ice will be forecast at least 5 days out of 7 in the Great Lakes area from mid November through Mid March. But the alternative is not to fly. You get used to tracking the moisture-content satellite view and your temperature gauge, getting an early start on the defroster and making sure the pitot heat is on whenever it is below 4 degrees and anything resembling moisture (including just clouds) is around. Often the answer is just to fly at 2,000 or 2500 AGL VFR until you get past an icing area above. Yesterday we knew we had 5 degrees C at 2,000' (because we checked while ascending) so we weren't terribly concerned. Got ice at 7,000' on way up and 6,000' on the way back, when the forecast icing layer was supposed to be 8,000' minimum, and radar did not even show a light green return. So we descended quickly and at about 3,000' it turned to rain and came off. Funny that my 33-year-old Aribus 320 Captain copilot was asking permission from MSP Center to descend while I was already coming down 1,000 fpm. Hey ... it was the UP! Why did we just not start out and stay low? We were hoping to cross Lake Michigan and cut 20 minutes flight time and needed to be 9K or 10K to do that with glide distance, going over Beaver Island. So we had to nix that idea and fly over the straits. Got a night pic of the Mackinac Bridge though! Also attached is a nice pick of unforecast icing over Northern Ohio 3 weeks ago. lol ... I just opened that pic of the bridge and it is terrible quality! You get the idea though.

John

I wish I lived in the south were you don't have to deal with the ice but you guys get a different problem dealing with more lightning, up North its the ice for us and a couple of pics bringing my plane home after I bought and first flight from MI to MA.

Like Scott says in MI you have to deal with 5 out of 7 days a week or you can't fly, most of my ice was caused by an unusual SW wind while I was passing North of Lake Erie from the lake effect.
