Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Ok so I re-did the video, using a non Botticelli version of the tune and YouTube still flagged it as a copyright infringement. I disputed the claim and who knows if they will allow it or not.

I give up

Hi Andy, I am in KORD until Friday and will post pictures of the mount this weekend.

And I'll take credit for the credits !

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

How quickly does the lens collect oil & dirt? k

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Two thumbs up Joel. Brings back memories of a two ship overflight w/ Airotto during last Sedona fly-in. Many smiles. :-))

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

So this thread caught my attention enough to spend a few bucks. Good idea ;).

After much researching, this is what I wound up with....

Drift Ghost S camera

Based on reviews this cam has selectable exposure modes and a good still shot processor, figured it might be good to take night flying pics with.

Nflightcam mounting 'spud'

This seems like the an easy and compact mount option, anywhere there's a machine screw inside or outside the airplane you can just pop the screw, put this down, put in a longer screw, and you're in business.

This Panavise mount that grabs that billet on one end and has a camera mount on the other end.

Nflightcam sells this with a GoPro mount attached for 100 dollars, but they made the mistake of leaving the manufacturer visible in their pics. This is the mount they're selling, quite a markup....

This package of various propeller filters

Obvious reasons.

-25db attenuator cable and an extension cable to go from intercom -> mic input to record ATC and conversation.

Love the spud idea. My next flight is with the VIRB up on the top of the vertical stab looking down at the plane and the world below.

Be Careful with that one. I know others have done it but I recall an article not long ago suggesting that it was not a good location and that although it was a long shot but it could induce flutter if it near any of the control surfaces.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

I was thinking up right in front of the beacon however now I am nervous as I am risk intolerant and don't need the video that bad ! Thanks for the notes.....

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Ok, here's what I got....

The mounting billet that the Panavise mount comes with is on the left, the one from Nflightcam on the right.

The main difference in in them is the Nflightcam one has a much more substantial ring around the top, and is countersunk on the top. The Panavise billet can come free just by loosening the knob and rocking the mount a bit. The Nflightcam billet can't come off without completely removing the knob due to the fatter upper ring. The hole on the Panavise billet is for a much bigger screw as well, the Nflightcam one just fits a stereotypical airplane machine screw.

So the Nflightcam billet is better, just a matter of "how much better" I suppose.

The Panavise mount is very good quality, no plastic parts at all. It's powder coated aluminum all the way through. All it needs is a more substantial lock washer on the knob bolt to keep the knob tight.

I suppose then all one needs is a 10-32 nutplate to screw it into.

Pretty much, just pick a screw somewhere near some good structure (there is a bit of weight since these parts are all aluminum) and you're good to go.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera - FFOM mount

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera - FFOM mount

Andy/all, here is the mount I built. Aluminum angle iron, sawed off stove bolt, a lock washer and a wing nut. Stuck the Garmin mounting pad to the angle iron and done.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Those are some very nice videos. Never had the urge to get one but after seeing those videos from the belly of the airplane I might just change my mind.

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

You've got me thinking. When I removed old ADF antenna on belly, I fashioned a cover plate for the hole attaching to the existing nutplates. Wonder what I could fashion in that location. And my EX500 has a video input... THAT could be cool. hmmm. k

Re: Garmin VIRB Elite camera

Kelly
That is a great idea. Most of us have a ADF cover plate.
