French Lick Insights

I just want to go on record that I had messed up on this one. I had the manuals with me on my laptop, but I completely blanked out on that on Saturday and Sunday. Instead I sent them out on a thumb drive this morning via Fedex (because that's what Bill Kimmel asked me to do).

So, if Curtis had the manuals and was able to remove the nose strut already then it wasn't as a result of my sending him the thumb drive.

Also, props to you for taking it so well, Scott. I'm sure myself and many others would have been screaming bloody murder if it had happened on our airplane.

Agree wholeheartedly with Frank in that Scott was a purely class act in dealing with this accident. Well done Scott.

Scott, mentioned to some while I was taking the pics that I had to make a no nose gear landing (think it was 1991) when the nose gear failed to give me a green light. I was on the way to Oklahoma to see my Mom. It was already dark, I did a flyby at Bowman and they confirmed no nose gear down (Mains down) and diverted me to Standiford. Also did a long landing on the mains- bounce the plane purposely and they confirmed no nose gear. So they foamed the runway and I landed keeping the nose up till the speed bled off and of course then the nose gently dropped. Scrapping up the nose trunion (the part you need), the gear doors and the prop. I spent the night with the airport firemen, and then got a hotel while Bill Cochran at Commander sent all the parts. UPS hub was Standiford so got them on Monday. Took till Thursday to rebuild everything but the gear doors. Got a ferry permit. In Oklahoma, Clint Cresson of Commander Aircraft and I 'manufactured' new doors from the skins . Learned to work with those 'Klinko' rivet holder gizmos. Anyway, heres the pic of the rebuilt NOSE GEAR! Yup I once had Brown short hair. Thankful for what I have that still grows! Oh the problem- a bolt fell off the turbo support bracket, landed sideways in the lower cowling channel and BLOCKED the gear doors from opening. $12K damage from a 12c bolt. Replaced every damn bolt with threaded castelated nuts with drilled AN bolts and cotter pins- NEVER AGAIN!
See- your now getting a BILLET UPGRADE!! Are we having fun yet!

"Klinko"? As in Cleco?? ;-)

This is why you want to periodically check all the bolts in the nose gear area. Especially the upper gear actuator mounting bolt. Known to bend or fracture.

Re: French Lick Insights

Sorry to miss you guys. Events beyond control and all of that. Sounds like you had a great time. I feel I am now in great company in the Golden Tire Award sweepstakes having 'won' it in Fredericksburg and now joined by the esteemed Bill, and of course Sven.

Really missed visiting with my good Commander friends. :(:(:(

Right CLECO gizmo's. Thanks Bill. I was phonetically close; give me a break its been 22 years!(Thank G-d)! Bill would it be wise to just change the bolt every annual?

Also found this pic I took at the Commander Wiley Post Factory. Anyone know if those Fuselage #'s relate to any final N # on 114B's? Anyone own one of these- Wouldn't that be something! Sherman

Re: French Lick Insights

Sandy & I are just sick that we did not make it this year. Looks like you guys had a great time and we're enjoying the pictures and stories that are going up on the site. We will absolutely make it next year.
Hi Gib,
We missed you. I couldn't hit the little white ball straight without you there! Make sure you are in Fredricksburg next year!!!

Oh, go on. You hit it straight into the heather like the rest of us.

Re: French Lick Insights

Just uploaded my pictures.

Thanks to you all who made this happen. I really enjoyed the fly-in.

Cheers to you all

Re: French Lick Insights

A great big thanks to Bill B., Mike C. and Judi and all for a great fly in event, what a great time. I found out to old for go cart racing......Thank you Blanie and Sue for coming, it was a treat to see you both.

Re: French Lick Insights

It seems that at each fly-in, you get to spend time with someone that you have known before, but for whatever reason, had not talked to that much. So you do, and get to know them a lot better. Then you stop and have lunch with them somewhere while travelling, talk more, etc., and make a new friend somewhere far away. Is there anyone in this group who is not "interesting?" Have had lunches and visits along the way with Lonnie and his family, Ken, Pete, Byrne and many others. This trip I got to know Alex much better when I grabbed him to be cameraman for the ramp shot from the air, and Sherman when he was taking pictures for me of my broken nose(gear) and discussing options. I thought, "I have to stop and see these guys when I am travelling" -- and I will. Just a great group of people.

Re: French Lick Insights

Scott, since some of us could not make the flyin this year, I was wondering exactly what happened to your nose gear. Perhaps you could let us all know what mishap occurred and how it happened? Thx.

Re: French Lick Insights

While being towed, one of two things happened. The first theory is that when the towbar kept slipping out of the axle, and while under pressure, came off, caught the scissors on the nose gear assembly (upper and lower drag brace) and broke the torque tube casting. (see pix.) But Mechanic on the field told me yesterday, he thought the nose gear assembly was torqued in an excessive turn and cracked off that way. He noticed that the "stop pin" in the trunion is bent to the right (you can see it if you look closely in the first pic) and we all missed that. Whichever, the entire assembly was shipped to Welch Machine and it is there now, undergoing repair. Methinks I shall paint the pin (aka the "nipple" or the "tit") a nice day-glo pink and the stops (aka the "ears") day glo green.)

The airport mgr felt horrible, offered to pay everything immediately and has been all over it, following the package on the computer, confirming delivery, etc. etc.

Re: French Lick Insights

Yeah... that second theory sounds more likely. Even though I was in the first camp, I wasn't sure that the tow could have jumped high enough to catch the scissor.

Re: French Lick Insights

Scott is getting a new one.. no way that could be repaired. Well, Lonnie is investigating use of JB Weld, which looks promising!

Re: French Lick Insights

Scott/David: Again, last night a longer note on this got "No-wi-fi cyberspaced". If the 'new' 2nd theory is correct, then that means the casted area by the 'stops' are 'stronger' than the casting was where the pin that attaches the scissors upper is. We also discussed the casting area where the Nose gear steering cables attached and if that area was 'an area for concern'.

Scott-The bottom line is with a new Billett\ Trunnion- you'll never have to worry again. Think of the incident as a blessing in disguise! Sherman

Re: French Lick Insights

Scott, Before leaving FL we went out to the airport and was wondering why you were still there. That same thing happened to me in 42W years ago @Waukeegan, IL when they towed me to parking. Fortunately Commander was still alive and well, so replaced the broken parts with new. I then painted the stops with red nail polish, no more problems. Hope you are now home.

Blaine

Re: French Lick Insights

Thanks, Blaine ... man, it was great seeing both you and Sue! What a fantastic surprise for all of us. i am painting the "nipple" day glo red and the stops (ears) day glo green!

I thought we were going to triple safety wire the scissors and embed in Marine Tex!
