French Lick Insights

Re: French Lick Insights

Well, I made it home fine with Angelo and Natalie, but something tells me I will be visiting French lick again in the very near future.

Scott - looked at the Welch Machine website last evening when I got home and he has what you need. Hopefully he has one on the shelf or can fabricate on in a day or two. I believe he also has the internal rings for the rebuild so you may be able to get it all from him.

Re: French Lick Insights

We had the ultimate benign/boring flight home. 2:45 at 11.5 to Penn St, lunch with our daughter, then 0:45 at 7.5 home. VFR all the way. Did get to park right next to 2 Navy F-18's at KUNV that were still there from the flyover before the Penn St/Navy game.

Re: French Lick Insights

We had a great time too. Meet a lot of terrific people. This group is definately a unique cast of fun characters.

Greg, I hope the next fly-in I make has a go-cart track....we need a rematch :D

Too all the organizers thanks for your efforts!

Flight home was smooth and uneventful...nice when you can file IFR and still get direct for 760NM

Re: French Lick Insights

We had an easy 50 minute flight north to Kokomo, clear and smooth. Heard Angelo and Scott checking off with Indy approach, our last contact with the Commander group!

Great to see everyone, as always! Well done event and definitely appreciate the hard work put in by all. Looking forward to next year!

Mary Beth wants to know:

Is anyone thinking about where we're going next year??

David, can you PM me your (you and MB) email addresses so I can forward the Boyne info please?
Thanks.

PS, thanks for screwing up my landing at FL...damn Golden Tire award put me over gross on the way home! :D

Re: French Lick Insights

Hey, I was just opening the windows after we consumed a half dozen chili dogs between the two of us! I still don't get the award, was it for the first landing or the second?

Re: French Lick Insights

Or tail winds? :D

Re: French Lick Insights

Outside looking In.
It was a hoot watching all the Commanders (AC11’s) light up Flight Aware. And that does not count all the VFR only birds.
Maybe / hopefully next year . . .;)
Best, John

Re: French Lick Insights

Does anyone know where to find parts for these airplanes. I am looking for a:
Name of Part - Flap Trasmitter
Part Number - 439252
Quantity - 1
Type of Plane - 112A Commander

This part has been discussed extensively in the member's forums. There have not been ANY new senders manufactured for many years. Even the rebuilt units are patched up combinations of old broken senders. If you want one of these, try Lockhaven or Oregon. More info available through search function.

(and in the future, posts like this should be under either Technical/maint forums or Guest Inquiries.)

Sandy & I are just sick that we did not make it this year. Looks like you guys had a great time and we're enjoying the pictures and stories that are going up on the site. We will absolutely make it next year.

I got a new one, or perhaps overhauled about 5 years ago. Quit reading correctly after about 6 weeks. It is very rare for these to work right. get used to counting ... most say 1.5 second per 10 degrees and a quick glance to confirm. I would NEVER EVER EVER trust the gauge, especially on takeoff, if you value your life.

Re: French Lick Insights

My nosewheel assembly is off the Green Angel on on its way for delivery to Welch Machine in Kansas tomorrow. Should be back, completely reassembled and ready for installation by next Monday in French Lick, giving a time cushion for my arrival back on Wednesday evening for a Thursday departure, about 10 days from now. Whereas normally I fly these trips, my wife had decided to take a week-long road trip beginning Wednesday going south, and were returning right at that time and coming right though that area, so this turned out to be literally zero inconvenience.

I cannot say enough good things about Curtis Kelley, the local French Lick A&P, Bob Welch at Welch Machine and Bill Kimmel at French Lick Airport. Yeah, Bill broke it, but what a class guy. He insisted on sending that heavy sucker overnight, not 2nd day air, and already made me a comp'd room reservation at French Lick. I told him if he apologized one more time I was going to sue him!

If you have never checked out Welch Machine, go to www.welchmachine.com and look at their Commander gear assemblies. Beautiful stuff and much stronger than our current magnesium castings. So I chose to look it this as an upgrade.

Thanks to all of you for the kinds words and support. All I had to do was put on a sad face Saturday night and Lonnie, Bernie, Jim, Greg and others(who can remember?) were offering to buy me whiskey ... but even better were the warm, sympathetic hugs from Beth, Karen, MaryBeth, Joanna, Betty, et al. Actually, I was pretty well over it, after about 2 minutes that afternoon (what can you do?) but what the hell, free booze and warm affection ain't bad!

Special thanks to Angelo for the fine and fast ride home in the Super-C, Frank for tapping his knowledge storehouse and sending diagrams to Curtis, (Frank, of course, already knew Welch had the parts on the shelf,) pictures from Sherman (one is attached) and technical advice from many including Glenn, Bill Bailey and Pat Murphy. I made my first call to Pat 11.5 years ago before I bought 43W and Lord knows how many times I have called him since ... Pat, you have no idea how valuable your advice, counsel and friendship have meant to me over the years. Just having guys like you around always makes you feel like everything will work out fine.

Finally, several offered me parts out of their "private stash" and I am not going to blow their cover. Good to have friends in COG is all I have to say about that! No doubt I missed thanking someone important ... my apologies for that.

Frank for tapping his knowledge storehouse and sending diagrams to Curtis

I just want to go on record that I had messed up on this one. I had the manuals with me on my laptop, but I completely blanked out on that on Saturday and Sunday. Instead I sent them out on a thumb drive this morning via Fedex (because that's what Bill Kimmel asked me to do).

So, if Curtis had the manuals and was able to remove the nose strut already then it wasn't as a result of my sending him the thumb drive.

Also, props to you for taking it so well, Scott. I'm sure myself and many others would have been screaming bloody murder if it had happened on our airplane.

Re: French Lick Insights

Ouch.....sorry to see anything broken. At least you had great support. Can't wait to read the Green Machine is back in the air. I am lovin' the pictures of the fly-in, keep'em coming.

Re: French Lick Insights

Scott, mentioned to some while I was taking the pics that I had to make a no nose gear landing (think it was 1991) when the nose gear failed to give me a green light. I was on the way to Oklahoma to see my Mom. It was already dark, I did a flyby at Bowman and they confirmed no nose gear down (Mains down) and diverted me to Standiford. Also did a long landing on the mains- bounce the plane purposely and they confirmed no nose gear. So they foamed the runway and I landed keeping the nose up till the speed bled off and of course then the nose gently dropped. Scrapping up the nose trunion (the part you need), the gear doors and the prop. I spent the night with the airport firemen, and then got a hotel while Bill Cochran at Commander sent all the parts. UPS hub was Standiford so got them on Monday. Took till Thursday to rebuild everything but the gear doors. Got a ferry permit. In Oklahoma, Clint Cresson of Commander Aircraft and I 'manufactured' new doors from the skins . Learned to work with those 'Klinko' rivet holder gizmos. Anyway, heres the pic of the rebuilt NOSE GEAR! Yup I once had Brown short hair. Thankful for what I have that still grows! Oh the problem- a bolt fell off the turbo support bracket, landed sideways in the lower cowling channel and BLOCKED the gear doors from opening. $12K damage from a 12c bolt. Replaced every damn bolt with threaded castelated nuts with drilled AN bolts and cotter pins- NEVER AGAIN!
See- your now getting a BILLET UPGRADE!! Are we having fun yet!
?
