This is crazy! There are COG members both in Texas and in Europe, and the attached photo puts flying in both those areas in an interesting perspective.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

That is amazing to look at it that way. If you shift that over just a bit, 7 countries (and still a bit of Italy and France) would fit in Texas, including:

  1. Germany
  2. Switzerland
  3. Austria
  4. Holland
  5. Belgium
  6. Luxembourg
  7. Lichtenstein

But Dallas, Houston, Austin San Antonio West Texas do kind of all feel like different countries!

Kind of amazing that one country, Germany, could create a war machine (with a little help from Italy and Spain) s o powerful that it nearly over-ran the entire continent.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Gerry,
My family and I were fortunate to have spent over 10 years on three separate tours based out of Germany. It was nothing to jump on fast and efficient mass Trans and have dinner in another country. At work I flew Army Helo's and at one of our fields we had a decent flying club. I checked out in one of their 172s and worked the central Germany area - Rhine / Main River valley. Absolutely beautiful landscape.
Sure wish I had the Commander back then - though our club was semi-exempt from all the user fees and outrageously high fuel.

We have a lot to be thankful for by being able to use / enjoy the freedom that comes from flying in the USA.
Also had a chance to work the Texas area as well. Pretty vast out there especially in the west where it gets high and hot.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

What are the practicalities of basing your airplane in say France for 6 months to a year ? i.e. as a visitor. I am currently a winter transient in Florida. What would it take to be a 6 month transient in France or Germany ? Has anyone explored this ?

Work with them and you will see why that is possible.

LOL ... you know the Chrylser folk her in Detroit who worked with Daimler would agree with you 100%. They partied for weeks when that fell apart, and are very happy with Fiat.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Scott-I won't make any personality/ cultural values comments, because it is too 'Politically Incorrect' and certainly DOES NOT apply to our German COG members,

However, it was 4 times (War Machine) if you start with Prussia -'. 1800s--WW2.That's why after WW2 the Allies leftcTroops/bases. Enuf was enuf said 'The Greatest Generation'.

Now it's manifesting as 'Economic Trickery' -look at the recently exposed Volkswagen -Diesel EPA emissions scam /test cheat 2009-2015. I'll refrain from the descriptive attitudes-it's a NewYear.

Sherman, the VW issue is not German character at all. Far from it.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Gerry it's interesting looking at your map, I fly to Kiel in northern Germany once a year, this takes in 5 countries UK France Belgium Holland and Germany, thank goodness for me the international language of the air is English.

It is quite comical sometimes when you hear a French pilot struggling to converse with French ATC in English, when it breaks down they talk in French.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Having just returned from 3 weeks in Greece & Italy, I must comment
that the only airplanes I watched fly overhead were 3 or 4 light singles
all of which were on Saturday the 19th. Except for the twin engine water
bomber putting out fires in the hills on the Amalfi coast. Fuel was near 2
Euros a liter- roughly $8 a gallon (unleaded car gas). On a more positive
note, I was wishing I had my Commander with me when we were there.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Hey Scott in WW2 the German state (Nazis decision not peoples decision) forcibly commandeered the economic power of occupied Europe. So the production was done using French, Czech, Dutch, Polish, Soviet, etc. economic raw material, peoples labor and factories at very unfairly low prices, and slave labor from the Eastern countries for many war material factories.

So in effect Nazi Germany grabbed itself a population base of 180 Million.
Remember Luftwaffe aircraft production reached its max in 1944 (about 45,000) even under USAAF & RAF bombing that dropped its largest annual war time bomb tonnage in 1944.

So more than german resources were engaged.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

That is a good point, Sid. Still amazing they could pull it off (not amazing in a good way.) Well, I guess it is at least that incredible that a country the size of Japan could take over a massive chunk of the western pacific, SE Asian and half of China.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Scott /Sid-Guess we will have to continue our Commander Community Linking in Cyberspace!
I'LL be back working on closing up the Former Oil pressure leak problem-shortly. Yup Sid-you predicted it-The Veratherm. Looking forward to No more Belly Cleaning. isn't that ripe for a joke! I'LL post pics back in the Oil leak thread.

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

one economic advantage worth knowing is that you can claim back the fuel tax if the flight is beyond the national border. For example, if we fly from the UK to France the fuel and oil tax can be refunded and there is a lot of tax. Does the same thing happen for flights from Texas to Mexico ?

Re: Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

of course, if you superimpose a big state like Alaska (as opposed to cute little Texas) then that's probably the entire European land mass covered ;-)

Flying in Texas vs. Flying in Europe

Not to hijack the thread but Rob you were missed at the fly-in. Several people were asking about you.
