European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Ok, I will start LeTouqet is £1.58 litre (euros 1.97) $10.59 US gal.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Just out of curiosity,... anyone happen to know how much of that price is fuel and how much is add-on/tax? Breakdown of the tax would also be most interesting. (central gov't, local gov't, regulators, FBO concession, etc.) Bet the House of Commons loves to tap all the "fat cat" aircraft owners, eh?

If a litre of fuel was £1.15 (if only) then this is how the price is worked out

Fuel would cost 37.35 pence
Fuel Duty (Tax) cost 50.35 pence
Delivery costs 10.17 pence
Then they add the magic Value Added Tax at 17.5% for the total (for the UK) 17.13 Pence

We are lucky in Europe that they manage to tax us on the tax!! don't ask!

Our government are good at getting the maximum amount of money out of us, I read yesterday in a report from AOPA that OFFCOM which is the government agency in control of radio frequencies wants to charge a tax for users of airband frequencies!
A figure of £4950 a year for a 25kHz channel and £1650 a year for a 8.33kHz channel is quoted and the suggestion is that us pilots will have to foot the bill in some way. I just despair sometimes!!

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

I buy into the AOPA position that views fuel taxes as a somewhat equitable means to distribute user based expenses. On the surface, may lean a little harder on some of the private kerosene burners than avgas users but there are probably considerably larger numbers of avgas types that rarely use ATC services. Some FSS and the occasional VOR are about all they use beyond patches of pavement here and there. Throw in addt'l ticket taxes to cover the ATC infrastructure upgrades req'd for the big boys. But at some tipping point, it seems that the govt's view of aviation as a potential cash cow for general fund purposes really is irksome.

Oops... my smaller govt leanings are leaking out... sorry.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

You have to remember that in Europe we already have user charges, in the form of charges for using controlled airspace (some countries), landing fees, handling fees and approach charges.

In the UK if I fly into my local airport in IFR conditions I get charged for the approach, the landing fee and a handling charge which can add up to around £50 ($88) and that is not the most expensive!. The norm is to pay a landing fee and they range from £7 to £35 on average ($12-$61). Remember this is every time you land (take off's are free :-) ).

A trip to Biggin Hill airport to pick up my plane, recently cost me £42 inc Tax ($74) and that was a day landing in VMC conditions and no ILS approach.

I for one wish that we had the same facilities and charges as you in the US currently have.

You need to fight the user charges issue with all your might.

Rant over, and sorry for hi-jacking the thread.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Really appreciate your info on user fees. I support AOPA with money donations to fight user fees here in the states.

dittos!

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Blackbushe - EGLK - 14/09/08 - reduced to £1.62 inc VAT per litre.

And for the curious in the USA this is - $11.04 per US GAL.

Looking back at the thread and the discussion on user charges, it can often mask the true picture when one strand of an extremely complicated taxation system is looked at in isolation and seems to show a poorer picture for one nation's citizenship over another. We all pay user charges in the UK as we consume the services and on the face of it this is compounded by the higher level of tax on aviation fuel. However, in the bigger picture, the overall personal taxation which the citizens of both nations face hides gains and losses across a broad spectrum of goods and services. I used to live on Long Island NY and my wife in Chicago. Together we paid around 4 times the annual property tax we pay in the UK for similar accommodation and at the time the interest rate on our mortgage was 2% more than in the UK. The same was true in other areas. In Europe we certainly pay a great deal more for general aviation than in the USA, however we pay a good deal less for many other items, one of the most significant is healthcare.

Just trying to offer some perspective, not getting all political or anything.

Lawrence.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

When visiting Norway all seems so ridiculously expensive. But I'm just visiting.

My relatives that live there are doing very well and have no complaints other than of the USA.

Most of them live in areas that I would envy.

(I'm sure the neighbors love it too)

Great Picture Sven.
I really liked Norway, in-fact I like all of Scandinavia, they are all beautiful countries.

Lawrence,
I see where your coming from, but human nature says we only moan about the bad and just accept the good :D.

BTW we have a new Commander at Andrewsfield, G-DASH and I was trying to persuade Grant (the owner) to join COG, he seemed very keen to do so.

Perhaps we should organise a European fly-in and show him what nice people we all are?

I've just moved to Blackbushe, the bumpy ground at White Waltham was shaking G-BEPY appart. I counted 9 other Commanders parked there on Friday.

How did the Colton visit go?

Lawrence.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

I went to Blackbushe to meet Mike Perry who flew in in a Commander to show me what to expect when I bought one. There were quite a few there then.

The Fly-in sounds like a good idea perhaps we aught to think about it.

Colton visit did not happen on Saturday due to the weather in the morning. Fred could only stay until 11:00 and the fog never cleared until around 13:00.
I am leaving work early this afternoon to fly up there today.

I will let you know how it goes.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Lawrence,
Just got back from Little Staughton, and I see what you mean about the runway.
Taxi ways not as bad as I had imagined and active runway was 05 so never had the mast on the approach.
On departing I did an early left turn to avoid.

I think the trimming may be more expensive than I thought, its replacing all this stitched leather throughout that is likely to cost.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Worthy observation Lawrence. Taxation in most countries is a complicated crazy quilt of regulations and net impact needs to be observed as a forest and not individual trees.

...of course, there are those of us that wish to treat taxes as a game of whack-a-mole and fight them wherever they raise their heads.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

White Waltham - EGLM - £1.69 14/10/08 modest drop.

Blackbushe - EGLK - £1.62 14/10/08 bigger drop.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

John

Does this mean you have your aircraft back?

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

Lawernce,

Unfortunately not, I just asked the airport manager yesterday how much it was now.

I am told that my plane will be moving into the paint shop next week and this week was spent preparing everything.

Any news on yours yet?

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

John

Mine has been through engineering this week and is waiting for yours to move out of the stripping shed, I'm told they will start the prep on mine this week. They are not particularly good with communication, I'm still waiting for some prices for the GTX330 and the carpets.

I hear there is another Commander following mine through the process, I don't know who it is yet.

Re: European Members - Where are the best fuel prices?

I spoke to them on Friday and he said he was away for two days this week. Which I guess means that mine goes to the spray shop on Wednesday.

Trying to get information from them is like pulling hens teeth. I have managed to get the trimmers phone number and I call him direct if I want any information.
