Commander MT-Propeller

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Congratulations, Carl; great plus for the fleet.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Great news
Thank you

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Great job Carl-Boy!

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Congratulations Carl!

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

The 114 project wasn't all me. I inspired MT to push it along, but it was Finn Andersen that put up his plane for flight testing, and initiated the project in Germany.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Carl
We all know, it takes someone to push it through the system.
You are the man to get things done.
Many good ideas never happen because there is no one to push it.
Thanks again

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Looking forward to the three beer install manual Carl.

Congrats.

Actually it's just a 1 beer project. I did mine all by myself. The propeller is so light you just pick it up and bolt it on. 10 minutes and done! MT is even kind to you with the safety wire they only require .032 - still some cursing involved there though.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

I did my part in harassing the ze Germans about how they would sell at least three of them for 114TCs so surely it was worth flight testing here.

Got a nice reply from their test pilot and CEO. Seem like nice folks.

Cool, yeah, I think they heard you. They seem to be taking us seriously.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

I might be interested in one for my 114TC if they can do it and keep the FIKI STC intact. The MT prop has an application that directs the fluid.

I'll check and get back to you.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

The big benefit for the factory 6 cylinder TCs will be the weight/balance shift.

On mine, with the cast iron manifold and all of that up front, it won't trim level with 2 people in the airplane and full fuel. Too far out of the w/b envelope unless you put weight in the baggage hold.

Taking almost 20 pounds right off the nose should solve that problem.

Based on a reddit post (someone asking "what kind of airplane is this?") a few months back I'm under the impression that they were flight testing for the TCs this past summer.

Someone posted a pic of a Commander leaving out of a mid Florida municipal airport saying that the plane "jumped up to pattern altitude in seconds" and it caught his attention. I was pointing out to him that I appreciated the vote of confidence but Commanders are not good hot weather performers, and then it dawned on me...probably a MT test flight.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

If it "jumped up to pattern altitude" It was not a 114TC, unless it was doing a JATO.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Now at altitude, that's different.

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

My TC has never been able to jump in the air, but a new MT prop and tweaking the MP, RPM to upper limits sure helps. Now we have ground run less than 1000 feet.
Last October I called MT and asked if they could put on their 4-blade Malibu prop on my Commander, but they said the engine was not powerful enough and suggested another one, which I ordered.
In March prop, spinner and hub was ready and I went to Germany for the flight tests necessary to get the STC, which they would do it if they could borrow my plane for the flight test. Day one went with reference measurements on the McCauley and next day the new mt prop was installed and tested in many different flight conditions. On the third day all the noise measurements was done. Very nice people and I learned a lot about props in those three days.
After a lot of paperwork and waiting, the STC was ready in August for all 114 Commanders to enjoy. I do not know who sponsered the other 114 models for tests, maybe Carl knows?

Re: Commander MT-Propeller

Wow, Very good information. I hope we can get them approved in the US soon.

All of the flight testing for the 114 was done in Germany. I recognize Josef from your photo. I agree, nice folks.

All of the data has been submitted to the FAA, so it is only a waiting game at this point. I'm in constant contact with them, so will provide updates as they come to me.

I checked with MT, and yes the FIKI system can be added to their propellers.
