Drove yesterday from Calgary to Banff to Revelstoke,BC to do some skiing with my 19-year-old son. Heading to Kelowna later this afternoon. One of the most beautiful drives I have found on the planet. Kept thinking, "gotta fly this route." Driving is its own reward -- different perspective -- but I wanted to go up every canyon and see what's on the other side of that mountain. Anyone ever flown through here?

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Scott,

I agree; Banff is one of the most beautiful areas I've ever seen, during any season. Last time I was there (fall 2007), I contacted Steve Banszky and he took me for a flight in his 112TCA. It was fantastic. The performance of the turbo at altitude was an eye-opener for me.

Steve flew us west from Springbank Airport in west Calgary, over Banff, up the valley to Lake Louise, and back a different valley to the south of Banff.

Last I heard from him, he was selling his plane. I don't know if he ever did, though.

Chilko is the headwaters of the Frazier River.
Also, if you want a real experience, visit Barkersville, Silver Tip Lodge-Lake Quesnel -- picture attached. (Wish I knew how to get that little non-smiley face above to post here!)

As they call it "Gods Country" for a very good reason in Canada, probably one of the most beautiful areas in the world, Calgary and Alberta are expesially have some of the nicest looking features on earth and would really nice to fly.

No doubt the landscape is awesome. I have a strong dislike for the Canadian government. US following the same liberal footsteps.

Sven,

As much as I give credit to the Canada for trying to help everyone, that system doesn't work nor will it ever, and you are right with what's going on...The US is following the same liberal footsteps (Scarey)

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Sven, you mirror my thoughs.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

We do half our work in Canada the past two year. I spend a ton of time in Ontario, Alberta and BC ... even some in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It's a funny thing ... all of them complain about their health care system. but you ask them if they would rather have the US approach and they almost universally say, HELL NO! I do not pretend to know the answer but I know this. Small business is the biggest creator of jobs in our country, and the biggest obstacle to small business growth shown in survery after survey, is the cost of health care. what the heck to we do about this? A real conundrum.

Say what you want about their "liberal system" -- they have beautiful cities, they are very well-educated and their financial system is in dramatically better shape than ours. Best to understand it, not offer a blanket criticism.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Hey Scott: I don't know anyone who is unhappy with our health care system. What they are unhappy about is possibly the wait times in emergency and for certain surgeries. I was born in British Columbia Scott and I agree, Banff and surrounding areas are probably one of the most beautiful in the world. Really glad you are enjoying it.
Sven and Pete: What exactly don't you like about the Canadian government. I need to have a better understanding of the issues you are concerned about that Canada is doing to upset you. For what it is worth, I am not overly enthused about the way your conservative government has run things for the past 8 years. Could it be you just don't like any government?
Paul B.: I am not sure what you mean by Canada trying to help everyone. I don't think we have any "system" in place to do that as you refer to but please enlighten me. Anyway, so much for my rant. I better sign off before the controller of this site hammers me for not talking about airplane etc.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

OK guys, can't we all just get along?

Let's pick a country where there are no Commanders and criticize that instead, how about Burma.

There we are, all friends again.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

We're all friends I assume. Just opinions. Same here at home.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Ditto with all being friends. Opinions are OK too.

First my apologizes as my post was not meant to offend anyone in Canada, I was referring to Canada’s more expanded social services as compared to the usa systems in place, and our new President’s 410 Billion dollar spending spree. On the Health Care part Canada versus the USA System I give the Canadian system a lot of credit as I understand treats all the common illnesses at a fraction of our cost, but for the unusual and rare health issues falls short.
Interesting statistic and I am in the minority in the US for cheering for the Canadian Health Care system is that adults live longer, as well as the child death rates are a lot lower in Canada as compared to the US.
We're all friends too, just a good discussion and opinions are good for all, again sorry if offended any of my Canadian relatives.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Being based in Detroit, having a family place north of Toronto, travelling for years to Canada for business and two sons who played high-level hockey ... and I watch CBC a lot and the best paper bar none on the planet is the Globe & Mail ... I am one of the more informed Americans on Canada that I know. And I find Americans frequently use Canada as an example of negative socialist policies, with very little knowledge or basis in fact. Having said that, Sven's reference to Canadian Government Air Regulations has a lot of merit! But not a whole lot worse than the FAA.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

Paul: Certainly no offense taken and Scott I totally agree about our air regs. here in Canada. They are abominable!

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

I dont like anyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

get your guns and ammo while you still can...and a can or two of Red Bull.

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

there are two passes through the mountains the one you drove threw was further north... I have flown through the crowsnest past.. the entry to the pass is extremly windy.. there is a town right at the entry called pincher creek that has alot of wind generators to create power for obvious reason.

The day i went it was not clear so I had to stay in the valley and it was alot of fun.. you build up the courage to jump over certain ranges to speed up the trip..

Just go on a sunny day with little wind and you will have alot of fun.

stop in cranbrook it is a nice valley..

Re: Calgary to Revelstoke to Kelowna

I have heard Cranbrook is beautiful. You know ... you can fly the famous "Rocky Mountain Trench" from South of Kalespiel, MT all the way up to about Ft. Walton, and I think you can stay down around 3000 feet most of the way ... maybe one climb to no more than 6,000. Revelstoke sits in there. That would be a fantastic trip.
