Better than expected

The place was so isolated and perfect.
On a deserted Island away from the stress of daily living just around the corner.
Mini Harbor was empty, no human life obvious, all looked closed for the winter.

Only with a plane could you do so on an impulse in a late afternoon.
:):):)

Videos later. 10 minute clips.

Re: Better than expected

Looks like a soul searching day and a good one in a commander.

Re: Better than expected

would like to just take a tent and hang there for a week.

Re: Better than expected

Did some tooling about yesterday. Thought I'd share my afternoon to those interested.
The video is not pro by any means, audio is cockpit live, unedited.

Landed at an Island,
Audio disconnected in error,
Grass Strip ~1700 foot,
Landing is uphill--so pull up the nose, short roll:

Took some local video:

Departed (uphill grade):

Stopped By KHWV to see a friend and almost hit a deer departing:

Thanks for sharing, Sven. Great videos, especially for those of us stuck in the doldrums.
Either that deer ducked to miss your left wing or 82J needs some serious metal & paint work. It appears you rotated long after the deer had passed.

Lucky for you they had the "STOP: No Landing" sign stored inside the little guard house for the winter.

:D

Re: Better than expected

Very nice!
How Great Thou Art!
Nice audio. Must be Gypsy Kings?

Re: Better than expected

F: If you listen close to the audio, I mumbled "I guess they forgot to put the sign out"

G: Looking somewhat delayed and out of the field of view, it just cleared my wingtip. I saw it coming a fraction before. I'm thinking the wing lighting helped the situation.

Re: Better than expected

Enjoyed the videos; thanks for sharing Sven. Really like your landing lights. Makes the single nose light seem even more anemic.

Re: Better than expected

The camera does do justice to the lights. To the eye they are more spread and more friendly. HID on the wingtips. 4509's on the gear. As one turns you can see the buildings, etc light up. Not so much on the taxi.

Re: Better than expected

COG Alaska IS going to be fun Ian.
:)

I am starting to put together the CD collection to play during the trip. Regina got a 35mm SLR camara with two lenses for Christmas and we have been practicing with our digital movie camera all for the purpose of recording the highlights of the trip.

We are pumped.

Re: Better than expected

Great relief from the scud and freezing rain we have been "enjoying" for the past few days. Say, is your bracket portable for AK or should I be working on one? ;-)

Re: Better than expected

Sven,

I noticed that your engine is aweful quiet in these videos. When you stepped out of the plane the wind noise was very audible. Is there something you are doing in flight to dampen the cockpit noise??

Re: Better than expected

Pick up audio through intercom (i.e. - head set noise cancelling mic)?

Re: Better than expected

Bill, I have a bracket or 2. We'll be all set. Just have a spare banana headphone out jack available.

The new camera for some reason picks up the audio channel very well and has, for some reason, just enough "side tone pick-up" to hear faintly the background. The Cam mikes must be beading thru a bit somewhere. A good unexpected touch. Previous cam was dead to this.

I'm have to be getting a sound shield for the mikes. Cant get too crazy on this tho. The wind was as it sounded. A stiff ~18-20kt breeze.

One of the factors for landing: No deer, no birds and wind down the runway. Notice 1750 foot grass and off 1/2 way. Some of the performance was due to the wind getting pushed up the runway so when I reached the crescent it shot up quickly. The trailing main landing gear takes grass well. The nose not so until you get 20 kts or so till you get weight off it a bit. Bumpy, but the whole thing way is too much fun that you cant do it. It's nice to just plop down in a remote place and just chill a bit and then take off at will. Not a soul within ~10 miles. Nice sunset to boot.

Some only like the long hard runways. Ya can keep that stuff. BORING.

:)

Re: Better than expected

Sven,

Having flown by Gardiners Island a few times too, never was sure if that was a runway or not, as on the New York Sectional it doesn't show one either,or even a private airstrip on it.

Anyway looks like you landed on North Main St on the Island etc. the windsock is for the crop dusters for the farm next door....!!!

Funny that Island has escaped development over the years as it is pretty decent size.
