Hi All,

Lycoming has agreed to take IO-540-T4A5D and T4B5D cores from your 114/A airplanes in exhange for Lycoming overhauled or remanufactured B-model engines, the IO-540-T4B5. In effect, this means you can swap in your 70's engine for a much fresher 90's engine.

There is an unlike core charge of $4,100 but for this you get:

(a) the safety of twin Slick mags, and
(b) a virtually new engine at the Lycoming overhaul price because the pool of T4B5 engines is small and the case and backend are different part numbers relative to the suffix D engines so you are virtually guaranteed to get a brand new case and back end in addition to the new top, thus a VERY new engine without paying the reman price.

This makes a lot of sense for those who need to deal with runout, or running out, 114/A engines but are not planning to do the IO-580 STC.

Aerodyme STC SA00246BO provides for making the swap. Call me with questions.

Jim

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

Quick question on this option- is the Black Mac 3-Blade STC'ed for the T4B5, or would this require a new prop as well?

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

Whats Lycoming want for an overhauled or remanufactured engine for say the IO-540-T4B5?

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

That's great news Jim.

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

Hi Tyler,

Aerodyme's T4B5 STC states "the spinner, propeller and propeller governor may remain in service provided that they are listed on the aircraft TCDS or separately STC'd or field-approved for the aircraft".

Thus, if you already have a Mc C405 (Craner STC) or Mc C419 (CPAC STC) installed, it may stay installed when changing to the T4B5 engine.

Hi Paul,

Here's the current engine pricing from the Air Power website.

User report:
After working with Jim and purchasing his STC I opted for the factory rebuild newer model (zero time) engine.
Also went with the Hartzell Scimitar (Jim’s STC)
Airpower team was super to work with as well.
100% satisfied - highly recommend.

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

Out of curiosity, can anyone explain to me why are there four different prices (twelve, if you include the new, rebuilt, and overhauled prices for each of the four options)? Looks like four different "ENPL" entries, but not sure what that means.

Thanks!

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

Also, how long does it take to remove and replace an engine in a 114B. Days?

Re: Better IO-540 Overhaul

There is a quality range on this:

Let's say 2 guys 2 days for the slam bam.

Add some for TLC attention to the many things that are asking for attention at 2000 hrs.

Good question.

The last one is a -T4B5D, which is the engine with the dual Bendix magneto. The one just above that says 28v. Presumably the top two are 14v, but that's just a guess, and I still don't know why they'd need two listed.

Thanks and just for reference and other owners Victor quoted me a 35-38 K for a Rebuilt this past summer as I am past TBO and another option for a good overhaul by a very good company. Lycoming will give you 7K to mothball the engine and trade it in for another model XXX-XXX-XXX as they want the single mag engine I0-540 recycled, and have you buy an overhauled dual mag engine.

Yeah, after a bit of noodling, I kind of figured out the 28v, and eventually recognized the "dual-mag" version, but the other two? Not a major price difference, but it would make me worried about ordering the wrong one... Read a story a long time ago about a guy who ordered a "wrong-way-turning" engine for his twin, not realizing that they were different part numbers. (Not that I would ever order an engine without an "expert" riding herd on me...!)
