Baggage Door Gas Spring

Re: Baggage Door Gas Spring

Heres a pic of mine. I did not install it and had my IA do it at the annual. He said it went on no problem and I think it looks and works great.

Thanks Carl,
Tim

Tim,
Pop rivets on the frame ball mount?

I saw that too. I think his mechanic just added a doubler to reinforce where the jam is cut to install the pivot. This is not required, but it wont hurt anything to have it on there. The jam is reinforced already by the bracket, and the cut is covered, almost completely, by the plastic trim.

How long is the install taking ... do it yourself and/or A&P doing it? My A&P wants to schedule it for next week and he is wondering what others have found.

It took me three months.

But a competent A&P could do it in a day. Assuming they have everything* and follow the directions. You may have to make some "adjustments" if your door jamb alignment isn't standard. k

* new baggage door gasket, new hinge hardware, sealer for the hinges, correct tools and a warm place to work.

My door just has a key which is a pain in the ass. Can you purchase the latch mechanism?

No, you would have to buy an entire door with the latch on it. The video was just to show off the gas spring mod.

To add to Carl's statement, even if you buy the entire baggage door it may not fit your airplane. I prefer the latch too, bought a door off a later model 114, and it doesn't fit properly.

If you buy Carl's baggage door kit and want to borrow the baggage door with latch that I have to check the fit on your airplane, then you're welcome to come down to ISP and pick it up. I wouldn't recommend trying unless you have some other reason to take apart the baggage door hinges, such as installing Carl's kit.
