This morning we take off from Lansing en route to Pittsfield MA for a weekend of hanging out with friends.

Heading into Penn Yan, New York for a quick stop and we followed a B-17 in on final. Not something we have done before.

Then we follow the B-17 to the FBO where a B-24 is parked. We taxied to self-serve and had to wait for P-51 to fuel up.

Interesting fuel stop that turned into a few minutes looking at warbirds. Flying = great adventures.

Jim

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

A few years ago my son was taxiing at a large airport when Ground instructed him to give way to the Boeing. He said he scanned left and right looking for an airliner then the B-17 made its way out from in-between two large hangars. He told us, "that is something you don't see every day".

We are fortunate to have the Yankee Air Force B-17 "Aluminum Overcast based at YIPl. I twice was on parallel runway coming in next to here. Also a couple of times next to one of Jack Rousch's (two) P-51s. There is also a B-25 owned by Yankee Air Force I have taxied behind. Our own Mike WXBEE is flying that one now! Just great to have that stuff around.

p.s. Thunder over Michigan with Blue Angles and a ton of Military aircraft plus Michael Goulean, one of the very best aerobatic pilots, all at YIP (Willow Run) this weekend.

Scott, are you going to be at your Hanger this weekend? I might have an extra ticket if anyone is interested.
P. S. It's "Yankee Lady" (overcast is EAAs) but thanks for the shout out!

Mike, Going to spend all day either Saturday or Sunday ... have not decided. Going to work on plane and hangar and whenever I hear a plane I want to see, walk out. One of the Blue Angels was parked on the Active Aero Ramp when I got in last night from PA about 10 PM. Great to see it sitting there. I would LOVE to get that ticket! email me!

My CFII and the Chief Flight instructor at the Aero Club here, got to log an hour in the P51 when they came through KCOS this summer. Very jealous..

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

Mike,
Will you be at Thunder Over Michigan both Saturday and Sunday?
I am thinking about coming up.

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

Pat, I will be there all day Sunday, at the hanger messing around and then I will walk out to the taxiway and watch whenever I hear a plane I like! You have my cell and my Hanger is Birdcage D2 (the Green ones on the South end of the East Ramp, not Black Eagle which are the blue ones on the North end of the East Ramp.) Call me or stop by. I will have beverages and some food! Angelo may be having a party like he used to ... or not. Saw a gal waxing up his 114, but no one seems to hear from him around the hangers.

My youngest daughter had quite a day today. She spent a half hour in a P51 and then after that she flew about an hour with the USAF Thunderbirds. The pilot took this picture. She was happy to announce no throw up on the trip even with 9 positive g's.

That's a pretty amazing day, for sure! How did she manage that? Let us know if there are more pictures, videos, etc.!

That is just fantastic. You DO have to tell us how this all came about! Where did she fly both?

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

Midland TX KMAF airshow is going on this weekend. She is an anchor/reporter for CBS 7 in Odessa and worked to get this amazing assignment. She is coming home later today and has over 17 gigs of pictures and Go-pro footage from inside the cockpit of the F16.

When I get them I'll post up some.

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

How cool is that?! Great moment. (and a very unique FB or Twitter post)

Re: B-17 on final and a P-51 at the fuel pump

I've asked Lauren to put some of the video on her You Tube channel. It is amazing video.

The tower and pilot interaction is very cool. Tower clears them for takeoff and he asks for VFR departure and clear to FL18. The Go-pro is centered on Lauren and you can see both wings and the rear view. The take off roll is about 2500, tower said to clear the terminal before what came next. The pilot pulled it straight up and I watched the timer. Around 3 seconds they leveled at 14,500 feet and picked up the IFR clearance to continue.

All the pictures are 5 meg so they won't upload without making them smaller. I will get some of them done. She was impressed they put her name on the plane. Once in a lifetime and that is quite literal. They do this at every airshow and they take one media person up. She had a background check and all that and is now on the list and will never be considered again.
