Learn the latest about flying general aviation aircraft to Cuba from AOPA Vice President of Operations and International Affairs Craig Spence and AOPA Pilot Information Center Manager Ferdi Mack during a free webinar June 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The two will discuss who can fly there and for what reasons. Plus, hear the latest on the regulations, procedures, and restrictions for flying to the country.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

What is the latest thoughts on the FCC Radio License for the 'plane'?

Friends to the North? How critical is that for entry into Canada?

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

Mine expired and I did not renew it. In all the years of flying to the Bahamas I was never asked for it.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

The Canadian customs does not ask for the radio license, either.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I 've island hopped all the way to the leeward islands multiple times.

On arrival anywhere - they were all concerned with the general declaration, cargo and passenger manifest and arrival and departure fees and not much beyond that.

I did and still maintain a radio license on board. But have never had to show it.

Now the argument is - if you get ramp checked by any of their CAA and don't have it - u may be in for a ride ..and may not be given clearance to leave.
It will be a scene out of air wolf :)

ps. I would be in for a mission to cuba if we can arrange a mini-fly in there .

I would also be "IN" for a group going down to Cuba, count me all in if you guys decide to put a trip together.....

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

John,

The radio licence is needed by the nation of the rehigistration of the aircraft if the aircraft operates outside the border of the aircraft registration. So, a real example, I have a Canadian radio licence for flying a Canadian plane flying in the United States. Visa versa applies. It's likely all beauracratic but I obey to both requirements. The same will apply yo Cuba.

Best regards,

Pete

Cuba, I'm in. Vamonos muchachos!

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I think I have my Radio license somewhere ... but if someone lost one, or did not have one, where the hell would you get one?

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

Sooooo I had one from back in the day when it was either a requirement or was highly suggested from my CFI. Do they expire or do I just need to find it and dust it off?

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I believe they are registered to the aircraft. The folks that sold me the airplane 10 years ago sent me an FCC renewal notice last year, and it shows the tail number. The web site in the letter is:

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

There is a FCC radio Station License for the pilot which is a lifetime certificate for about $65 I think and another one issued to a specific N number which is valid for 10 years and it was quite a bit more (around 150 I believe).

I have both one for me and one for my airplane. I too just feel better having it just in case I get ramped checked too.

Yep, the personal FCC radio "operator" license never expires, so it is good for life. Don't remember how much mine cost back in 1970-something...

The FCC "station" license is for the airplane, stays with the N-numbered aircraft, and also never expires. Technically, this is one of the ARROW documents, though I understand that it's no longer "required" within the US, but is required if you cross the border (Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, etc.) I heard of one guy who got in trouble in Mexico for not having his station license in his airplane, but he paid the "fine" to the local guy who busted him, and was allowed to leave... Don't know if that would work in Cuba, and would not want to test it!

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I am not sure which one , but one of them does expire . I received the renewal notice and chose not to. I think they wanted 150$ from me.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

It's the FCC operator license that does not expire. Mine is dated 1970 and I don't remember paying anything back then...

The aircraft Radio Station License does expire and has gotten expensive over the years.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I stand (or actually - sit) corrected. I didn't realize the aircraft station license expires. Guess I need to check mine again...

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

Waahahaa!!!!! I wanna go!!!!!!

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

Updating my Garmin/Jeppesen charts / Databases last night. There was Cuba, wow, never seen that before.
I'm in for a Cuba hop.

Re: AOPA Webinar on Cuba

I went ahead and got a Radio Station Authorization for the plane. I plan on in the future to fly to the Bahamas. It was $160 for 10 years and by doing it online I got an email 8-12 hours later with a link to print out the document.

Would this be all I need?
